Dear all, For all those who do not know what Sciatica is... It is a medical condition where the disc bones have undergone some degeneration and they press down on the Sciatic Nerve and the pain radiates down from the back to the calf muscles. the pain thresh hold ranges from high to to low for different people. What it does is it restricts movements for a lot of people. It is a frustrating situation as the pain is always there....!!! I have had this situation for the last fifteen years. And I am twenty nine years old. It comes and goes and it is extremely frustrating for me as it limits my movements and I like to work out or do a lot of sports... I just wanted to know which if there is a permanent remedy to this situation...!!! How effective is a back operation. would there be any side effects for an operation??? Because I have changed my doctors and medicines and they have given me temporary reliefs but nothing satisfactory as the pain comes back after some months or weeks...!!!!! If any one knows the best possible remedy to this situation...Please share with me...!!! Share your views... Balu

I am suffering from sciatica since 2003 but i discovered only in 2006 that it is sciatica. It is from the herniated disc in my lower back L3 & L4. It was terrible pain, I feel how you feel. I also tried acupuncture, i finished 10 sessions but it just aggravated the pain. I also tried physiotherapy but it was of no help. I researched the internet for whatever remedy I could avail. I've read that surgery is not a guarantee if the same lifestyle will not change. I did not consider surgery as an option as it might just worsen the situation. I ordered some food supplements in the web for the pain remedy and I noticed that it helped me somehow. Maybe it reduced the inflammation of the sciatic nerve. You need to observe your diet as well as there are foods that could worsen the inflammation. Once the inflammation is gone the pain would go too, but if the cause is herniated disc like mine, the injury might stay but the pain will not be there. I resigned from my desk job and stopped working for three years. I always make sure that I am doing physical movement. I did one hour walking daily and I noticed that the pain diminished. But everytime that I get stucked in the computer, I would feel the pain. I also put a pillow on my lower back when sleeping for support. It would help correct the injury in my lower back. Now I'm back to desk job again and I feel the sciatic pain attacking from time to time. I don't have any physical exercise for the past year. Change of lifestyle and diet would help to relieve the pain, make research on pain management. Some also go to chiropractors to correct the injury. May I ask what is the cause of your sciatica?

Dear Hexebella, Thank you for sharing..!!! I normally work out. But for the past one month I have not done any sort of exercise because I was taking medicines. Well I am still taking medicines. Now I have to start exercising slowly...!!! I was planning to do it from tomorrow so that I can get on with things... Or else I will gain weight...!!!! Like you said I too have a desk job as I teach and all our work is done in front of a laptop...!!!! Apart from the time I am in class, rest of the time I spend in front of the laptop...!!!! So from tomorrow I plan to start exercising with some brisk walking and some ground exercise. Let us see how it pans out...!!! Hope fully it will reduce my pain...!!! Share your views...!!! Balu.

How is your back now? Any better? Mine started hurting and at times I have pain down the backs of my legs. Did the walking help you?

I am also having pains in those areas of my body and I am suspecting I also have that kind of health problem, probably an early stage. What we need to know now is how to prevent this problem from worsening. Any advice from our friends here? What do we need to do?

Find out first what is the cause of your sciatica so we will be able to determine what preventive measures to be taken. My case is due to herniated disc which is an injury. Generally, to protect our spine, we should learn and do the proper lifting techniques; when picking up something from the floor, it is recommended to bend our knees; do not stay long in one position like for example if your are working in a computer or driving long distances, it is necessary to take breaks, bend backward and put a small pillow at the lower back to support the lumbar spine. Obesity also causes back injury.

balu - i am sorry to hear about the pains u have in this young age. I read through the discussions - i suggest you adopt life style which will involve movement and not a desk job. take medicines and have prayers to ur favorit God. I desire things should improve dramatically early for full cure.

I asked some of my friends, they said, your condition is not reversible. But then, you should keep precautions in protecting your spine. Since it is not possible for you to go for activities like sports. You need to take consideration proper body mechanics, no twisting of upper back, etc. However, you can consult physiatrist in your place, ask for clearance if you can still do your passion in sports.
