Would they charge text message the same internationally or domestically?

I just wonder would the charge be different or the same if you send a text message internationally? I meant the text message is sent outside of the country, like Canada, or Mexico, etc...... Last night, I was communicating with my friend through text message while her internet was out at her home, which is located at another country. We were text each other back and forth for several messages, then I was suddenly worry about the cost of each text. I told her that I rather wait until her internet connection back up then I will send her message or I would video chat with her.
