Not really a surprise. He has been bothered by injuries the last few years. He missed the whole last season do to an injury. Yao played 8 seasons and would of played alot more if he was not injury prone. I think his height had alot to do with the injuries and the pounding basketball puts on the body. He will be missed!

It has been expected and advised of him to retire already in NBA. The same thing is also with Shaq as both of them suffers from a very bad injury. Yao Ming is still a very good player though. He is a very good perimeter shooter despite of hi height. He might be quite slow but he is a good defender as well. He's been playing hard all the time, and he's been always fouled hard most of the time and that is because of his size. For me, that is a good decision to retire already.

Yao Ming's retirement was good timing. I am glad he did not see if he could come back form the latest injury. So many players, who should retire, don't and end up doing poorly before they do retire! Anyway Yao Ming will be missed but he will not be forgottan!

Yes, surely he will not be forgotten. He's one of the many players that made a huge impact in the NBA. If not only for his injuries then he might still be one of the top players and still be playing in the All Star game.

No surprise here. Yao Ming is too tall to be doing all of that running up and down the court. The problem is people that tall cannot properly absorb the shock and in the NBA where you are really running and gunning its lights out. Good player and had a good career.

I was not really surprised Yao Ming retired. With his height his body couldn't take the pounding. He had a good career even though it was not a long career. I am sure in the future Ming will be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame.

When i heard about the news ,i was totally stunned .Even though i knew it was going to happen sooner or later ,i just didn't expect that it came so soon .I have to admit that Yao is one main reason why i fall in love with NBA games .Before Yao's landing on NBA, i only knew about Michael Jordan ,Kobe Bryant .It was Yao that made me know more stars and players .It was him that made me fasinated to wonderful games even gossip about stars .As a big fan of NBA games, i am sorry for Yao's retirement because i am not gonna see the giant on court any longer .As a Chinese ,i am sad for Yao's leaving for that one Chinese age in NBA end up .Farewell to Yao !Have a fine trip !

I read he still will be involved in basketball. He is going to help coach the team he owns, the Shanghai Dragons. He won't be in the NBA any more but at least he will be in the sport!

I'm surprise with this news. Probably, because I don't follow NBA that much. I think China is losing one of their biggest idols. Do you know how old he is?
