Where are the One Peso Coins?

Philippines

Every time I buy from a store, be it a sari-sari store or a deparment store, or I ride a passenger jeepney, the storekeeper or the driver would always ak me if I have one peso coin and I often don't have in my wallet. Even in my own small store, I notice that we always run out of one peso coins. I am wondering where have all the one peso coins have gone? Is there a shortage of coins in the Philippines?

The real culprit are those huge piggy banks! haha! no really they are real culprit. I have 7yrs old niece that has 2 huge piggy banks inside her room and it contains mostly of one peso coin or "piso". It is so full that even I cannot carry it by myself, we have to roll it to move. I asked her parents who did that happened for a 7yr old to save that amount, everyday my niece always ask her parents, neighbors and grandparents for piso. And her grandfather usually give her 50 peso coins whenever he visit. haha! Its funny though.

wow.. your niece is very rich, in fact, she may be richer than me hahaha pls urge the parents to have those turned into paper bill or saved in the bank so that it will circulate..

Haha! I bet it only cost roughly around P2,000, you're still richer than my niece. Anyway, I told them to tell their daughter about depositing to the bank and she agree with only with one condition, if she could withdraw it thru coins too. haha!

Maybe these storekeepers are also trying to gather coins. Shortage? Nah, maybe not. There are many coins in circulation in our country so I think there can be no shortage of it.

Most of the one peso coins here are also spent in the "piso-piso" internet and the most popular and recent invention here in Cebu: ATM or Automatic Tubig Machine. ATM by the way is placed almost everywhere in the city where in all a person do is a get a plastic in where ATM is placed and then placed it under the faucet - drop a one peso coin and then a certain amount of water is provided to quench your thirst. It looks like the karaoke machine where you put a 5 peso coin but only it's smaller, enough for a gallon of water to be fitted. I don't have an image yet. Maybe I'll make it as a discussion soon.

I valid observation there dorisday1971. Not only sari-sari stores and jeeps that they ask if you have spare one peso or two peso coins. They also asked that in large department stores and restaurant. I also seldom has spare one peso coins in my pocket.

I was just wondering if all the allegations are true, perhaps the the 5 peso coin would disappear first rather than the 1 peso coin because there are more videoke machines than any other coin operated machine in the Philippines!. In my opinion 5 peso coins would also be more sought after if you intend to make an alcancia or piggy bank, just a thought

I don't think there is a shortage... however, I also think some people are "hoarding" their coins - maybe saving it in a piggy bank or something, or they are keeping it in cans for charity.

I guess it's just coincidence in your part. I've been seeing a lot of one-peso coins lately and I believe that there's more of them than we think. I prefer getting five-peso coins and ten-peso coins more because I get to put it in my daughter's coin bank.

We can find peso coins in our "alkacia". this is not a new scenario we have peso coins but the problem is that we don't mind the coins what matter to us always is the big bills. we only look for a coins if we needed it.
