I am concerned with health issues from cell phone usage

Periodically we hear on the news that there could be great health issues from cell phone usage. The reports saying brain tumors are a real threat is quite disheartening. I think especially of all the kids who from a very young age start using cell phones. It's scary imo. I have come to the point of thinking I'll use a cell phone with an ear piece. It seems that is suppose to be a safer method. I always preferred a land line, but was considering just using a cell and not having a land line. I changed my mind. I wonder how others feel about the safety of cell phones. Do you worry it could lead to major health problems after a few years of usage?? Have yiu cut down on time spent or have you started using an earpeice?

For me yes it is a big case to be with by using cellphone so be use your left side ear when answer the cellphone when it is ringing because the brain is in the right side.

I am a leftie (not political by the way) so I always answer my cell phone on my left ear. Then I heard that I should start answering at the right to make it safer. So I will just keep it at the left side. It is easier for me.

ebuscat: I've never heard this. The brain is on the right side? Or did I misunderstand and did you mean the right side of the brain is more susceptible to being damaged??

I do not have any worries. I do have a land line because with cell phones, you have to pay by the minute after the free usage that you paid for every month. That makes it expensive if you get bothered with telemarketers (some that are not on the do not call list) and also if you have to pay for the text messages sent as well as received. But getting back to health issues. I was told that if you switch the cell phone from your usual ear to the other one, and do not keep it near your body - i.e. if you have it in your purse, keep it facing outside, make sure it is not close to any important part of your body, you will be all right. The trouble is with ear pieces, they draw attention to yourselves. They say I am a techie and I have a cell phone and I am important because only important people have ear pieces. I think if you limit your children's use of a cell phone to only a few minutes a day that should work. Personally I believe that children should not use a cell phone until they are teenagers unless it is an emergency. Mainly because of the cost.

I do not think children are responsible to use a cell phone. I do get rather suspicious of those articles and warnings and wonder whether it is from countries where they use the most cell phones and are put out to discourage anyone else from getting to their stage. Here in Canada the use of cell phones are more expensive esp. with the data plans, so we do not have that problem, but why is not that data directed to countries that use cell phones the most and have the cheapest rates? Instead they direct these warnings to Canada and the States. I do think for emergencies, that often it is when you do not have it on you, that when you get home, you get the email that they were trying to get a hold of you or your land line rings.

I never thought about acountries trying to discourage the use of cell phones, but that makes sense.

I don't think it would bother me if others think I am a techie. The trade off is my health so I think I'd be ok with being called a techie. You do have a good point about the other body parts. Limiting a child's use is one solution, but I still say the cumulative effect on their growing bodies could be harmful. I agree for emergencies only it can be more helpful than harmful, but then how many of us really have an emergency in which we need a cell phone???

I think that you have good reason to be a little concerned about your cell phone usage, as it has been linked to cancer from the radiation. This is one of the many reasons that I prefer to text rather than call people when I feel the need to talk to them. If you do this, then the phone is not anywhere near your brain so you won't be at as high risk as you would if you called people. I think that the manufacturers of mobile phones would do well to take a look at what's causing this radiation and try to reduce it, as a lot more people would probably use their mobile phones.

You and many others have the right idea. I try to limit cell phone useage to emergencies only. My job doesn't require it anymore so I prefer landlines.

Hello there. Yes, cellphone have been a lot of issues regarding health. Cellphone is having what you called radiation that causes cancers. If your cellphone is always touching your body, then it might cause some massive trouble with your health. I think having earphone, what you're saying, is somewhat can help to prevent that. If we are calling, or somebody is calling to us through cellphone, then its much better to use earphone so that cellphone's radiation won't touch on our head which is prone of radiation. Maybe starting no, I will always bring my earphone so that I can try what you're suggesting. Thanks.

cellphone now become a part of our body,we can't live without it, but it depends that how many hours you use.use of earphone just reduce it effects not eliminate. this necessary to keep cellphone with us in pocket i read somewhere that radiation always come from cellphone it does not depend that we are attending a phone call or not.but i am not sure

gidz0518, Also we really don't know the long term affects. That is why I am especially concerned about children. My kids are grown and started using cell phones at a much later age than kids are doing now. I know earphones are not as convenient, but I think it's smart to use them and I am happy to hear you say you will

Onlyballu (11) I hve cut down on using a cell phone. I guess I need it for emergencies, but seiously, I could live without one. I finished my old plan and gave it up and now I have looked into a very cheap plan to use a cell just for emergencies. I will see how that works out for me.

I am really glad that I am more fond of texting rather making and answering calls. It is indeed dangerous and is already a proven health treat. It is even suggested that u should never used it on calls where the signal is low since the pick up of the radiation is much stronger and that children under 10 years of age is more vulnerable.

Texting looks too hard lol.. I watch others doing it and they are so fast. I don't type that quickly. The low signal is an excellent point. I haven't heard that. I agree, children under 10 should not use cell phones. However, they often do to talk to their parents of grandparents. In that case I think they need an earpiece.

I would just want to clarify what gidz said.. or what you stated.. no matter if you use headphones or not, the radiation will still enter your body. Land line is safe because they are not wireless, and because of that, they have other sources of transferring the said energy to the receiver. Unlike cellphones, we use them wirelessly. for example you site A=====B======C "A" is a place where your friend is using his phone, trying to text "C". You Are "B" you are caught in between the transferring of their signals, and this is the first, although less radiation will enter your body, but it still enters.. "A" and "C" might be your neighbor, even if you don't use cellphones, you are still prone to radiation because of your surroundings.. Radiation wave can't be seen by the naked eyes. if you're using a WIFI internet connection, then my friend, it is just like using a cellphone.. Radiation enters your body, and mutate a specific region in your tissue, which affects your cells.. the mutated cells then becomes what we called cancer cells.. No matter how far you are, No matter if you stop using it.. you are still prone to it.

Good points. I do understand we are always exposed to some radiation all the time. My point here is to try to cut down. We can't avoid it completely, but I would be in favor of trying to avoid what we can.

The vicious effects of excessive cell phone use is yet to be realized. No doubt in the longer run the possible radiation effects would be disastrous to human environment.

True and that is what is scary. As I said, especially for children. The long term effects are the concern and in my opinion using whatever precautions we can is advisable.

If your cell phone actually emits enough radiation to damage the body, isn't adding an earpiece worse? I mean, you'd have the cell phone in a pocket, emitting radiation all the time, PLUS a thing in your ear all the time, doing its own emission? Just turn the phone off. It's a far better solution.

Hmmmm I have never heard that before. It is a good point and I will check it out in research. The main health concern I have heard is brain tumors because the unit is so close to the brain when holding it, but you do have a good point. Thanks

I am not sure that it has been proven yet that cell phones lead to health issues later in life. I don't use mine too often so I guess I will be okay. But certainly something they need to continue to research as there are those who live with it almost attached to their ear.

I agree nothing has been determined definitively, but I still think better 'safe than sorry' I also know at times, incorrect research is just scaring people but this is serious and I will limit my usage and hope there are no ill effects for anyone.

I am happy to see more and more people are thinking like that. I do wonder about the pollution caused by throwing away cell phones and having them end up in our landfills. In time I suppose they will develop biodegradable ones.

I don't know if I heard the news right but I think brain tumors are caused by rapid using of headphone or earpiece. Using headphones whole day and everyday is very dangerous to our health because aside but deafness it can also led to brain tumor and possibly shut down other parts of the body. Maybe another thing is having poor eyesight because of the screen light but aside from these things I didn't know any other health issues of using cellphones.
