The Pirate craze. Do people really know what they're supporting?

I am using the recent interest in all things "pirate" to make this point but feel free to comment on any similar situation. I recently went to a music store and saw a huge banner welcoming Pirates. It was a generic banner promoting Pirates of the Carribean and games that glorify piracy. Does anyone else see the irony here? We still have pirates today, only, aside from the annoying Somalian ones, the modern ones are in cyberspace. Here's a quick quiz for the music stores with pirate posters up: What do you call someone who downloads music for free and decreases your company's sales? A PIRATE! Encouraging piracy anywhere is ridiculous considering any respectable business would throw out or arrest any real pirates in their business, but in music stores they are really blowing my mind! I just want to walk out with whatever I can carry by just saying, "Hey, what can I say, I'm a pirate! Thanks for supporting us!" Anybody have other examples? I just had to get that off my chest. -The Annoyed Pirate Rat

I buy pirated CD's and DVD's to cut the price off dramatically and save up for what I really need but if I really support the artist or the movie, I make it a point to buy the real thing. I'm not really that rich to buy originals, especially knowing that I'll only be watching it once and then put it in the shelf and let it collect dust. Sometimes we all have to think practically.
