importance of giving rest to muscles after workout.

I am a beginner in this field.I usually do workouts for different muscle groups like abs,chest,biceps,back,buttocks.How many days should I take rest after workout?what is meant by recovery period?Is it same for all muscle groups?How much time should I take rest between each set of rep?can you give a best workout routine for 1 week?
