In these difficult times, what other ways can you save money?

I have tried the normal saving of money like in the bank, several bank accounts actually, I also have a piggy bank, wherein I save coins that I cant get into. Its not much but when its already full I know that it will still have a great value. In the bank, theres a tendency that you can withdraw that thru atm so I would go for passbook accounts, no easy access. My salary is just enough and I need additional savings. What other ways, creative ways can you think of that I can use to save additional or extra money?

You seem to be really thrifty redphile! That's good. Well, another way of saving for grocery shopping is to make a list before actually going to the store. This limits impulse buying. Also, look for promos and discounts so you can add some more monies in your piggy bank or in your bank account.

I don't do grocery LOL. Well only when stocks run out at home, but not on a regular basis. And when I do, I only buy mostly toiletries, things that we need at home. I dont buy extra things and always go for the freebies, those with buy one, take one with promos and stuff like that LOL

Oh! You're a very lucky person, then. Who usually does the groceries? Are you living with your parents?

I think in this economic depression situation. What we should do is: first,try to work hard,at the same time not lose confidence in ourselves and never give up learning new knowledge. second, we should try to find more tips to live economically, in this way, our money can be spend more wisely and efficiently. Don't buy things which have little use. Try to take buses and ride bicycle instead of drive cars; Don't go out to eat, but cook by yourself; Don't buy those famous brand items, but buy more common ones. There is another thing to pay attention to. Health, as we all know, health is the most important thing, without it, it is meaningless even you got a golden hill. If you don't take care of that, and become ill because of too tired or worried, then you can't save any money later when you got the ability to earn money.

I agree that learning and acquiring new knowledge is very important that we should never stop learning new things that would help us along the way or even in the future. There are a lot of economic ways of living and I think that if everyone is aware of how this can be achieved, it wouldn't be difficult for anyone. Well as for my lunch, sometimes I would also bring food to the office which is cooked by my mom :) Branded items I am not a fan, but only those affordable but quality items that will last a long time.

never shop without a list; use your local library instead of buying books and cd's; shop at thrift stores; make soups and stews for meals; make your own Christmas presents, that sort of thing.

i dont have savings account thats intended for that alone. But i have a cup in my drawer full of coins. I didnt intend to do that just to save, just for fun cause its the smallest currency we have here and i dont normally use it. My way of saving is reducing the amount of grocery i make . Thats were i spend much of my money. I dont buy stuff i dont really need..

Well my ways of saving is really much like yours. But added to that, expenses are being kept to a minimum or whenever we go buy groceries, we tend to look for the sale sign or the marked-down price section so we can save. Hope this helps.

Yes thank you that is something that I practice now whenever I would do the grocery. I always go for the sale items and promos and buy one take ones, so that I can get more value for my money.

hi redphile, Saving money is really hard today especially when all products tend to be high. One way to save money for me is only buy things that are more important. Don't waste money buying clothes or jewelries that you think that are needed. Save money even a single centavo.

Yes thats true products in any form, prices go up every now and then! But what can we do right, we dont have control over that. Yes, I always remind myself to only buy things that are important and never waste money over things that are only for pleasure purposes or something that will not be useful in my everyday life. Im not a jewelry person, I only wear earrings and old ones I dont really buy unless someone gives me a gift. LOL

Having an ISA is a really good way to save money, as the interest rate is much better than other savings accounts and it is always tax free. I make sure that I use up my full ISA allowance each year and will then put the rest of my savings into another savings account until I can put it back into the ISA again. Food shopping is an amazing way that you can save money. If you buy supermarket's own brands rather than the big brands, you will be able to save a lot over the course of your life. I manage to save $30 per week from doing this, and I am sure that you would be able to do the same in your life, too.

When shopping for anything, food, clothing or shoes, I dont really go for the brand name but I look for quality and something that I can rely on for a long time. There are a lot brands out there that are available that doesnt have to cost more than what you earn. I eat lunch or dinner at the office at the pantry or cafeteria which is clean and affordable so that I have enough for the next day.

I know the feeling about not having enough money. My husband works part-time and we barely have enough for the barest necessities. I have been looking for ways to make extra money, but have not had much luck. I have a savings account where 25.00 is deducted from my husband's VA check each month, but it is not really adding up. I try to make money on here, but have not had much luck. When I do make payout I do put it into the savings account, but this year I will proably end up putting it towards Christmas.

How we wish that there wont be any taxes deducted so that we can get the full salary we are supposed to get LOL he higher the salary, the higher the tax, unfortunately. Mylot is something that I put more time to because this is the only part time that I can afford to do now, I have a full time 8 hour job and it is pretty stressful already for me to be able to get a part time job. And yes! Christmas is near so gotta save up for the gifts and stuff LOL

Since you seem to be saving some already, yet it's not enough, I suggest you look for other ways to earn money. instead of putting money in savings, try other investment opportunities. you can talk to your banker who can give you options. You can also invest in stocks if you've got the skill. You can even turn a hobby into a part time job.

Im so skinny already due to stress taht I cant afford to get a part time job anymore LOL I have a full time 8 hour job which is so stressful but then again, what can I do, I need the pay, and the company I am in now pays more than the average. Investing in stocks is something I may look into, I have no idea about stocks but will do some research on that.

I always spend much than i earned,that's a bad habit,but now that i have a great idea about saving money,as a girl ,we always saw that some products are on sale,so we just go a rush and buy them blindness.Actually we don't need that.We need to consider before buying,I think that would also be a good way for us to save extra money.
@redphile (2264)

I am not an impulse buyer and makes sure that I only buy things that I need. And yes that is a bad habit that your expenses are larger than your income, it should be the other way around. Sales at the department stores would be fine but only if you have already alloted a budget for that. Like you have already saved it up in the past, then you will have the liberty to buy that something, but purchasing an item on impulse is definitely a bad habit.

my passbook is not really effective because it is linked to my atm debit account. So during tough times, I tend to transfer funds from my passbook to my atm and withdraw it. My salary is not consistently high. It fluctuates. Sometimes it's high, sometimes it's low. aside from banks,I keep a coin bank inside my cabinet. I used to keep ten peso coin. In the office, I keep a vase which contain one peso coin. and every payday, I keep one hundred pesos and let mu supervisor handle it. Actually, BPI bank here in the Philippines encourage people to save straight from their atm where they receive salary.
@redphile (2264)

Well I actually have that save up in BPI, and though I had it for long now, there just comes a time in your life that you have to spend so much for an emergency or something unexpected. You should have a passbook with no atm, so that you will not have easy access to your savings. In my piggy bank I only put in 5 or 10 peso coins too.

regular savings account earns very little interest. if you could spare some money, try having a time deposit account. it earns interest bigger than a regular one. one thing is that you can't withdraw the money at a certain period of time.
@redphile (2264)

Yeah I know that regular savings only earns a little interest, I have inquired about time savings, but I just want to make it a little bigger before I can put it in time savings.

I seldom save my money in the bank, the bank interests is much lower than inflation index. I like to invest it to the stock, my husband is alway saying,'Knowing the way to increase money value is more important than saving money.'

I am not familiar in saving in stocks, but then it is something I am interested. I would probably do more research about that. Thanks!

Limit how much you spend. Eat in more - take your lunch to work from home because eating out for lunch during the week adds up fast. Try to run all your errands in one swipe, one day a week to save gas. It's expensive to fill the tank these days. If you can, carpool to work with friends and if you take kids to school, try carpooling with 4 other neighbors so only 1 of you drives once a week instead of all of you driving your kids in separate vehicles every day. Unplug appliances you don't use all the time, like the microwave, coffee pot, can opener, etc. That will cut down your power bill tremendously. As an example, I saved $85 one month by doing just that - unplugging things. It was wonderful!

When going home, I would always ask my boyfriend to pick me up so I can save the transportation fare :) I dont have a car so I dont worry about the gas. I try to limit my spendings! but still its not enough *sigh* For appliances, I am the police at home and I always tell every member of my family to always turn off and unplug unused appliances at home. If everyone can be consistent I think I will be cutting down our electricity bill too!

There are different ways to save money of course. As I see it, one way to save money is to reduce expenses. And, I way I have been doing to reduce expenses is to reduce wasting. For instance, I would not keep the lights in a room in my house on when I do not need it. I would not have the TV on while I am not watching it. I would not keep the radio on when I am not listening to it. These are a few things I keep reminding myself to reduce expenses.

Yes, they say that if your expenses are higher than your income then its already too much! Well, I am not that materialistic and I make sure that I only buy the necessary things in my everyday life. Reduce expenses of course, and saving on power or electricity is also one thing that I enforce within the home too. I always tell every member in the household to always make sure to turn off the lights or remove the power cord from every appliance that is not being used. But still, our electricity bill is way up. *sigh*

Well there are a lot of jobs out there you just always have to put your best foot forward and Im sure in time you will land the job that you want. Someone will be employing you soon! And from that time that you start earning money, you will be able to save, maybe not much at first but then as time progresses you will have your turn.

There are many practical ways I do to save money or maximize the hard earned money. When going to a certain place, I will walk if the place is not that far considering that transportation fare in our country is always increasing. It saves me money and at the same time I have a free exercise. When buying food, I go for those items that have a long shelf life and buy in places known for low prices. When buying non food items, I usually go for the brand that has a good quality (a little bit expensive) but it will go the long run. I only spend on the things I need and save as I can from my income. That's it.

If my work is just gonna be near I would love to walk or just take a bicycle, but its far from my place and currently my company does not provide any transportation allowance. But yes, that is a good idea to just walk and its a good exercise too! as for food, well my mom covers that but when at work, i only eat affordable lunches but still I make sure that it is clean and safe to eat of course. I dont go for shopping much, I have a lot of clothes for work and do the laundry so that I always have something to wear every week. I only buy things I need and do not indulge.

You could cut coupons, sell extra stuff on ebay and make sure your not spending your money on a daily habit like coffee of pop because that definatly adds up, hope this helps.

There is the piggy bank idea, but instead put dollar bills somewhere which adds up fast. Just put 5% of your check and any extra money made into it. After a few months you can have a couple hundred dollars or more. Also set abudget so you know when you need to stop spending and begin to think more of where to put it.

Yup! the piggy bank idea starts early in life when I was a kid, but then the piggy bank breaks so I used up all the money I had then LOL. But yes I do try to allot at least 5 to 10% of my income every month, but then sometimes if there are emergencies that needed to be attended at, it cant be helped but be used up. The budget, I try to do that, I'm not a big spender and I make sure that when I spend my money on something, it is something that is necessary in my life.
