using facebook once in awhile can improve grades?

August 30, 2011 2:15am CST
Hi friends:) I read from the magazine that the best way to continue using Facebook and doing good in school is to allow one minute tech breaks every 15 minutes, It sounds crazy, but researchers say that when kids know they can go online for at least one minute they’re less distracted and more focused on their work. hehe so let them do facebook:D What do you think of this friend?

Well, I do think that this will work if the student will get the right answers to a problem set given to him from a friend which is on Facebook! That student will surely get good grades from taking a break from trying to solve it himself and seeking the help of his classmate on Facebook. But yes, Facebook is now used by some for academic purposes of communication. Do you have any link to that research? It would be nice if you can share the source of your information so that the users in here can assess if this one is valid or not.

I'm no longer a student so i see no point in facebooking to improve my study habit. If i were, i'd rather go mylotting for relaxation than go to facebook. If i could go online for a few minutes to gain more focus, i would spend it here on mylot.

Errr.. For real? Give one minute to kids for facebooking, and I think they don't want to stop facebooking until one hour passed. If we are forcing them to stop facebooking after one minute, could they being focused now? Weird research, I have to say.. Which magazine is it, anyway?

My daughter uses facebook quite alot, mainly for horsey stuff. I do think she goes overboard, and should study more. A tech break mauy be a good idea if it helps some student focus. My daughter would think one minute is not long enough though.

hi:) perhaps its better if you only give her a definite time a day to do facebooking after studying, if she dont study then facebook is a no no too. thank you for your c omment friend:)

i don't think there is already a dissertation on that but experience wise everybody needs to have a break.visiting to facebook isn't bad as long as it doesn't eat too much of your time for studying.that will just relive your momentum in reading and seeing visuals. also, it's good to connect people on that site and bother to ask questions regarding your topics to friends. with that you can have more add on sto some discussions in your class from friends' opinions and advises on some matters.

The thing is for a while students' needs to unwind and have a break from the stress of cramming and studying. It's actually beneficial to have some break. I remember my parents forbid me from playing video games because they said it will make me, it will make my grades terrible. Years later, my nephew plays video games 2 hours a day and he have been consistently a honor student. In a way face book is a form of entertainment and sometimes we need to be entertained in between while having breaks from work or studies. I do mylot inside the office. I still got promoted, isn't that ironic

I think this is a really good idea. Not necessarily that it’s facebook, but any kind of break and any kind of stimuli. It’s common knowledge that we reward children with good behaviour. For example in school, if you get all your homework correct, you get a gold star. If you do your chores properly, you get money. That kind of thing. So it works the same way with getting something you enjoy. If a kid knows that it is getting something good, if he/she just studies hard for a half hour or an hour, it gives them a drive, or a push.. which is a great thing. But also, taking a break is very important. The human brain can become distracted and complacent if focused on the same thing for periods of time! .. it’s the age old saying, “I’d rather watch paint dry” when it comes to doing something boring, as watching paint dry would bore someone senseless. The same thing happens when focused on one thing for too long a period of time, so the distraction is a kick start to the brain again.

It's funny to think about but I think if that helps in order for a kid to be motivated with doing homework, projects and reviews, then it will not be bad at all.
