The trade in illegal butterfly capture must be stopped!

I was horrified to see, on a community TV programme last night, the way that gangs of illegal butterfly traders are teaching local farmers and their children, in various countries, how to identify, catch and kill not only butterflies but the more exotic species of insect too. Most of them are destined for markets in Thailand, where they change hands for vast amounts of money. It broke my tender heart to see these fabulous creatures imprisoned in plastic or behind glass. The smaller ones are even used in key-chains! These poor farmers have no idea, and are wickedly kept in ignorance by the traders, what will happen to their crops if there are no pollinating insects. When are we going to wake up to the fact that if there are no pollinators, there will be no HUMANS?! No bees, no humans! No butterflies and moths, no humans! Here in the UK we are already starting to see a steady decline of our bee and butterfly populations due to modern farming methods. Also, large chunks of our beautiful countryside are being destroyed to make room for more housing and roads. Very soon, because our country is so small, all we will have will be towns, cities and roads, with nowhere magical and peaceful to go! Are you worried about what is happening in your own country?

Thank you for the information. I was aware of the bee polulation diminishing, but not butterflies. It's really sad that through lack of knowledge and greed so much harm can come to our world.

A lot beneficial insects too are being snatched from very specialised environments, that consequently, will rapidly decline because of their absence!

yes this type of thing concerns me. But however, I was not aware of the severity of the problem until this post. I thank you for that. Here in my country, the bee population is dropping. People need to realize if there are no bees, there will be no crops, etc. Thanks for bring this up and keeping us aware.

I am always happy to post something that will either alert us to danger or fill us with joy, Tech! I'm afraid it is happening all over the world, Stary1! Mankind is either too blind or too selfish to realise the impact it is having on ALL of us!

Thank you, for posting this information! I truly was NOT aware that the sick HUMAN is coveting/killing such an important part of our ecosystem! Will mankind STOP at nothing, until the universe is destroyed? Each and every miniscule element is SO necessary to keep the balance provided by Mother Nature..and being destroyed by humans. How/why do humans NEED to possess (as in key chains) these wonderful creatures--when they are so beautiful and beneficial in freedom! YES, I am extremely concerned about the environment, and my own country...the dependency on chemicals, when everything is provided naturally if we would only take the time to care for this earth. Thank you for posting this discussion! Cheers!

I'm terribly concerned about the chemicals poisoning our beautiful Earth too, Pergammano. Why do we humans have to be so greedy when, as you say, everything is provided for us if we only knew how to respect it and use it selflessly?
