I picked up some dried peas and am thinking of making pea oup today in my crockpot. I don't have ham - can I use cooked bacon? What else would make it tasty? Thanks

I love pea soup and have used pork in mine before. I find that bacon would be great also. Some things I have added in the past were, celery, onions and bay leaves as well.
Here is a nice website for many different ideas to try:

While ham is traditional, you could also use bacon, even sausage.
I do not add meat to my pea soup. I make it the way my mom did.
I use the traditional mirepoix - carrots, onions, celery (which I first saute to sweat) salt, pepper, various herbs. I use chicken base as my broth and the dried peas. Toward the end I add small noodles to give the texture meat would otherwise give. I also add dill at the very end.
