You Could be Blind for Life, You Know?

I saw this news on facebook and was shared to me by a friend. A guy had worn contact lenses to a barbecue party one night. He stared at the burning charcoals for about 3 minutes. Not long enough, he began screaming and jumping up and down with hands on his forehead. People around him didn't know why he was doing this and seemed to be in pain. It's because his eyes were exposed to the heat that melted his contact lenses. The doctor said that the incident made him blind permanently. This serves as a warning to us. Are you using contact lenses, my fellow mylotters? Then, please always take cautions carefully.

Really? contact lenses can melt and make you blind??? I never have trusted contact lenses, because they seem a little scary, I don't really want to be poking my eye. I heard from a friend that her contacts accidentally went into the back of her eye and that was really painful. I never knew contact lenses were that dangerous! I got to tell my friends! She often wears contact lenses all day. To play it safe, I prefer to stick on some glasses, I don't like poking my eye so I like to wear glasses even though it is a big hassle and it doesn't look good. But better than having contact lenses melt into your eye and make you blind. I heard from my teacher that staring at magnesium burning may damage your eyes and I did just that during a chemistry experiment.

The message is a hoax but your teacher was right about burning magnesium. It is very bright and can cause temporary blindness, if not permanent damage.

I never knew that contact lenses can be as damaging as that. Well, regardless of whether those contact lenses can melt or not while being used, i might as well never allow my family use contact lenses. That friend of triple whose contact lenses accidently went into the back of her eye, that is a proof that it is not worth the risk. I always felt uncomfortable with contact lenses. Until now, I am back to using the regular eyeglasses. Besides, I don't want to be losing my contact lenses just because I got to be too active for it at times. It is never an easy task to locate where on the ground did the lens had fallen.

Yes my friend. Please warn your friends. They still can wear contact lenses just that they have to be really careful. Another warning; Contact lenses melts on the eyes when cooking.

I don't think this is very true. These days a LOT of people wear contacts. And I'm sure many of them go barbecuing. If it was true that contacts can melt as easily as staring into burning charcoals, there would've been worldwide news and studies done. Warnings would also be placed on the contact lens cases or told by the salespeople. Either this story is a hoax or the guy wore really cheap contacts.

ronadelle, First of all, I hate to say this but you are indeed another hoax victim here. I don't blame you since this came from a close friend who is also another hoaxed victim. I would suggest that you subscribe to HoaxSlayer, a site which is devoted to exposing the current and latest hoaxes on the internet. I can assure you that you will learn more from their monthly mails than searching on the net yourself especially when you do not have a reliable source. That is crazy. Sometimes we do things that we do not realize that can endanger us! Like I am sure he was not thinking about his contact lenses when he was by the fire. Because they are just there but if he would have actually thought about it I am sure he would have out two and two together, but that is crazy. Perminet blindness!

OH MY.. I used to wear contact lenses. Like here on my picture. Oh my gosh, that was so shocking for me. I don't want that to happen to me. That's why I'm really careful when wearing my contact lenses. I wear only for a few hours, at night, at a party and whenever I really needed it. I don't wear it outside on a sunny day, on a smokey or hot place but that story made me more careful wearing contact lenses. Thanks for sharing that.

i used contacts before. somebody influenced me to try it. for a time, it felt ok because it created a different persona in me. but as days go by, months, it was so time consuming. then one day, one of the pair loosened and fell on the floor. i panicked but i found the other pair. the unforgettable experience was when one of the pair was damaged by my nail and i was not aware. my other eye got swollen. i did not try contact lenses again.

This is really scary. Thanks I am born with natural brown eyes that my friends always mistook it for contact lenses. I also find fake or cheap contact lenses being sold everywhere. One friend give me a sample of those cheap lenses almost one fourth the price from the authorized stores. have a good day

Hi ronadelle, Its a very alarming news indeed.Approximately 6% of contact lens wearers per year have developed some eye problem associated with their use. So it is extremely important to keep in mind all the necessary tips for wearing a contact lens safely, identifying inside out lenses, how to remove them and how to cleanse them to avoid any eye infection. To have a better appearane, choose wisely.

This is a hoax message which has been circulating for some time. See here: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/melted-contact-lens-bbq.shtml As the site says, "Forwarding errant nonsense such as this is nothing more than scaremongering and will serve no good purpose."

Contact lenses are uncomfortable to use. I agree with you about that having to poke the eyes just so as to look a little better than wearing the eyeglasses thing, will never be worth it. There was somebody who told me about the long term effects of wearing contact lenses over making use of the regular eyeglasses. Well, I just couldn't get used to those taking the lenses off and then wetting them before getting to the eyes, then taking them off again and cleaning them if it feels not right...hassle after hassle.

I prefer glasses than contacts, I never really trusted contact lenses as im really afraid of like poking my eye to put and take the contacts off my eye, im also forgetful and im afraid ill forget to remove them before sleeping (though i can remember almost all of the people i met). Is contact lenses just maid of plastics? or is his contact lenses fake? Ever heard of the fake contact lenses? They are really cheap and comes in many styles and colors though i don't think their safe.
