Many people say they have the right to do whatever they want with their own bodies. My question is: What did Paul mean when he said that our bodies belong to God?

With just dirt, God formed and gave life to man. It's in the Bible, Genesis 2:7, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." The human body is an incredible creation of God. It's in the Bible, Psalm 139:14, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." The bible teach us that our body belong to God and we have to care it because God habits in it.

Exactly that, they belong to God, as does every aspect of our lives. A true Christian is one that is sold out to God. By the Holy Spirit Paul wrote our bodies (if we are truly a Christian) are a temple of the Holy Spirit. We are to glorify God in our body.

I do not take the Bible in a literal sense. I think that it is all allegory and so my translation of it is as such. I do believe that we have the rights to do whatever we want with our bodies as our bodies "are our temple". I see no problem with decorating. To me, God is all energy beyond whatever physical form it is taking. God is the universe. Once this life is up, the body will no longer be connected to the spirit. We cannot take it with us. It will decay and return to the earth just as if it never were. It goes back into the system to be recycled. It goes back to god. I do not share the Judeo-Christian view that god is an external force, but rather I believe that it is internal. God is the universe. We are a part of the universe. We are god.

Might I clarify with you which verse(s) you are pointing to? I think I can guess, but thought I'd check anyway. I broadly agree with you on this. This cuts right through the argument of "it's my life, I can do what I want - bugger the consequences!". And there are consequences to every single action, word & thought - from the greater to the lesser, both now & in the hereafter. Christians are suffering every hour of every day due to their own choices & the consequences thereof. Some blame God, the government, their parents, boss & everyone else except themselves! It should be up to every Christian to determine exactly how they should live their lives every moment as if their bodies were not their own & to encourage each other to live God-pleasing lives as best they can, not to stand in judgement. I'm sure that I didn't create my own body, so I'm going to do my best to make sure I look after it like it doesn't belong to me - because it doesn't! You could argue that my parents created me, but they had a whole different idea about how they wanted me to turn out than what I did, if I even survived at all. I think it's written elsewhere that someone sows, another waters & God gives the increase, so we should honour the force or being (you choose!) by whose hand we live or die, by living within the tried & true guidelines given to us since ancient times.
