I've just watched on yahoo about a one-year-old kid who knows how to handle an ipad but gets confused with just a magazine. She keeps trying to swipe it, or tap it to get it to work. In the end she gets frustrated. Here is the link: http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/one-year-old-tries-to-work-magazine-like-an-ipad-2583883/ It's very funny. But at the same time my mind is shrieking, "What has the world come to?" Kids nowadays don't know books and other publications anymore. Do you think it's okay as long as they can read from their ipads? But ipads can be very distracting...

Hello swirlz, I saw that too on the Today show. It is super funny! Oh.. She's like my niece, she got used in playing ipods and touch screen gadgets like in playing game such as angry birds. One time, she saw me playing the game on my laptop (which is the typical laptop with real keyboard not the virtual one..lol) she went for the screen and started to swipe it like it is a touch-screen enable gadget. It was very funny. That is the ipad-effect I guess. Happy Lotting!

In addition, I think that it could be a good thing and it could be a bad thing for our new generation and future kids. Having said that technology will move us forward and living in a fast paced world needs us to be tech savvy - it could also be a tool for us to neglect the importance of basic things such as learning things the good "old" days. Reading books and reading the real books is somewhat different now. You could read different stories from your kindle and to download it only requires you to pay few cents or dollars which by the way is great. But it is really different from owning or having a real book and read the story from it.

Technology does have their advantages. But they wouldn't know the real joy from reading with a book. Kids really are easy to influence. Even between 2 gadgets she confuses them! But I'm sure that if you keep using your laptop, she would get the difference between them.

Hi swirlz! It didn't seem to me that the one-year old kid was using the iPad. I thought she was just playing with it just like with the magazine. So I couldn't really see the comparison, that she can use the Ipad but does not know how to read a magazine. It was only the write up that said that. Anyway, if that's really true, then I think it's bothering. I mean, if a kid that so young age already prefers a high-tech gadget, what more when she grows up? She will be dependent with all these kinds of gadget and will forget to use the traditional ones. I do not think that being dependent on high-tech gadgets is good. Aside from it's costly and high maintenance, it also promotes alienation from the society. People will opt to stay home and use their gadgets instead of going out and enjoying the sun.

Exactly. From communication to shopping, we can do it all in the internet. There's no need to dress up and go to the mall or market.

I watched it again, it did seem like they were putting ideas into our words by the text. But I did see her tapping a magazine at some point, and getting frustrated in the end. Maybe the text just exaggerated it get our attention. It's true what you say about being alienated from society. Although technology is supposed to get us closer, it is also in some way separating us from others, especially the ones in our approximate area. Everything is already in the convenience of their home, who would feel the need to go out?

Aww that was cute Thanks for the share! I think she is too young to know the difference. When she grows up, hopefully she will learn to tell a magazine from and ipad

There is nothing impossible nowadays, technology keeps on adjusting to the taste of everybody to reach their satisfaction. Kids should start learning the advancement for them to cope up as they are growing. When they are already at their school age, they might not use their fingers but they might just blink their eyes or wink to browse the ipad . Who knows our body in the future will be the ipad or PC itself as microchips can be planted to interact in distance. Can you imagine ourselves as walking robot with technology implants having built in ID or self identification, no longer using cellphone but talking with somebody using cellphone implant in the brain.Well, these things might happen all in the future because of the intelligence of the researchers, and who knows these things are already lined up to the their experiments already.

I'm not a pro for these kinds of advancements. I still believe that when we abuse technology they will overpower us in the future, like in the movies! So implanting ourselves with microchips and being part robots ourselves is a freaky idea to me. I hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime, or better yet, at all. There should be limitations as to what researchers do. Just my opinion.

I do believe that happiness even in a very simple way can no longer be found because no more satisfaction to our level up game in life of keep on wanting and keep on aspiring. In improving and developing, the awe in technology will soon eat up our right to be independent in our own capacity.Human made the advancement in technology that will soon make us its slave without knowing.

Yes, there should always be a balance. Street smart and book smart; or tech savvy and old fashioned ways. Being well rounded would help children later in life. It won't restrict them to just one way of doing things.

I think that this is a key example about how things have gone too far in the world, when young children are being brought up learning to use iPads rather than by learning how to read books or magazines. We have to get the balance right in the lives of our children to make sure that while we're educating them about technology, which is obviously important, we also have to make sure that we're not missing out key things which could prove to be of vital importance to them later on during the course of their lives.

I read an article from a parenting magazine about how techie kids are nowadays, i have read there that it is a bit of a disadvantage. It just confirms now from what you posted that is it, or from my point of view it is a disadvantage. Though it is nice that they know how to use an ipad at an early age.. but nothing beats books. As a book lover, we should introduce books more.

The sooner our children learn technology of the times the better for them. In the mean time though they need to learn how to do things manually. Does that make sense to you? I mean I see people using a weed wacker to trim lawns, yet I will do it by hand, that is possible you know..lol The point being is I believe children should learn all they can when young, they are sponges, just don't forget the basics just in case we loose the power of techology.

Yes, I get you. It does make sense. While we have to keep up with the times, we must also learn the basics so we have more options in tackling a problem. There should be balance between the old ways and the new ways.

I agree, what has the world come to. It is sad to see that children do not know the enjoyment of reading a good book. Sure ipads are fun and all but there is nothing like being able to sit and read a good book.

They don't. They rely heavily now on technology. And as more technology is being invented everyday, it seems there's no hope for the books anymore.

Goodness! The poor kid does even know how to flip and read a magazine page! The video was kinda cute though, how she tried to use her finger and move something on the magazine page But kids these days are very technologically advanced. I remember seeing on the news how an infant knew how to operate an Ipad and I still have no idea how an Ipad works! Kids are getting more exposed to the new technology now, so if this keeps going kids may not even know how to read a book anymore the old fashion. I prefer the old fashion way of turning a page, I don't really like reading a textbook or study from the computer, it really hurts my eyes. Pretty much in the future, kids are going to get taught by robots! The old ways are going to die.

Robot teachers! That's a scary idea. Our future kids might start acting like one! I'd like children to be playing, running around with other kids, not act like robots. Anyway, this kind of children has been on the decline since instead of playing with other kids, they much prefer to sit by themselves and play with their gadgets. The next generation might not be so social anymore. I don't like reading from a computer as well, it hurts my eyes too. And it gets confusing when you scroll down a page, you suddenly gets lost and have to find where you were.

oh my!. i haven't thought that's soon to happen. yeah, i agree, ipad as a reading material is so distracting cause it has games and so on. a kid can't concentate reading while her mind is distracted with other ipad applications. so sad if that would be the future.:(

Most probably that will be the future. There are more gadgets being invented everyday, and I don't think kids would not want to use them. It's sad knowing where we're headed.
