Original Ideas

Lately as I look @ the list of new movies coming out, somewhere along the line, I think they have lost he original ideas... I mean, a lot of movies now are either re-make of previous movies, Prequel or sequel to a movies that have been out for a while, comic books/video games turned movies, etc, etc... I know producers have to get ideas from somewhere but I hardly see any movies that are made from "original ideas" anymore... Don't get me wrong, there are some good movies but still... Anybody feel like that?

I have noticed that too. Even if they don't use the same title and call it a remake, it seems the movie has the same plot as one before it. I think that is just a result of the passage of time, and new ideas get sparse. I remember in one of my literature classes in college, they talked of basic ideals of conflict; man against man, man against himself, man against nature, and man against religion. I guess we could argue a new category is man against technology, but since man creates technology, that probably falls under man against man. I guess there is only so much you can write about, so many angles to the same story. Before you had movies released to cinema, there was no direct to video. Now that just about everyone has a DVD or Blu-Ray player, there are simply more movies released.

Yeah... It seems that way... How many different ways can you tell the same story? Which reminds me of a movie that came out some years back... It's called "Vantage Point"... It's a crime plot movie... Plot is about American president making a speech in Spain... Then there was an assassination attempt by a bomb... Story's plot starts by showing the whole event from 8 different people's points of view... Same segment of scene is played over & over again but from different people's stand point... Going to a movie now is almost like that... All the plots look very similar, just from different points of view...

I saw that movie as well and I know what you mean. They sometimes have continuity errors when they do all of these points of view though. One that comes to mind off hand is in Bad Boys 2. When Johnny Tapia gets it in the end they show his demise from multiple points of view. But before he hits the land mine, in the one view his weapon is tumbling end over end in the sand. In the other, he is holding it as he falls to the ground. 2 views of the same event, with different physics.

I like to watch movies a second or even more times, just to watch for those goofs. I have watched all the Terminator movies several times, and the one you are talking about is my favorite. And yes, I did notice those goofs, and as you say, many more.

I had this discussion with my daughter the other day and I totally agree with you. I think Hollywood has run out of ideas so they take an idea from the past that has worked before and do a remake. Sometimes it works but sometimes it just doesn't. I think this is Hollywood being lazy to think up of new ideas for movies. They're banking on the following that the old movies had before.

Classic example of that, movie called, "color of money"... Original movie was made in 1961 & it was called "hustler"... It was about a young person who hustled pool... His character name was Eddy, or nicknamed "Fast Eddy"... Then 25 years later, they made sequel called, "Color of Money"... I guess they started to run out of ideas so they looked to old movies & decided to make a sequel... I'm sure there are so many movies out there like that...

As far as Hollywood movies are concerned, I agree. But I'm not sure if it's because they've run out of creativity. It may be that it's a safer investment to go for stories that you know people will respond to than take a chance and lose money. Or maybe special effects and technology are the priority right now.

I guess you have a point... Whatever the popular topic is at the moment for the general public, you'll see more & more movies about it...

I understand what you mean. I can't say I really mind because I'm not very familiar with a lot of the comic books characters and I didn't read all the books they made movies after. Maybe for people in America it's a little irritating but for the rest of the world is not that bad. I understand the remake problem, I don't really get that either, but there are some good remakes. They will make more movies based on new ideas, times like that will come. I'm sure of it.
