My leeks will mean great saving this year.

Leeks - A picture of the leeks. I just covered them to blanch them.

In my country, leeks are expenssive. I don´t know why, because they are easy to grow. This year I planted some leeks in my garden and I´m using the tops while they grow. Three leeks cost about $2 at the farmers market. I planted them under the apricot tree and the only expense I had was to buy about $6 of good soil to make the soil lighter. Do you plant leeks in your vegetable garden? Do you use thwem for cooking? Are they expensive in your country? Share

Hi Marguicha. How are you? OMG, why leeks are so expensive in your country? it is very cheap here, in Indonesia. For 2-3 cents, you will have many leeks. More than enough for 2-3 times cooking soup or saute something. Usually, we buy leeks together with shallots, garlics, bayleaves, lemongrass for 3-5 cents. if you are lucky to meet a nice seller, you will also get other herbs/spice. Not too many, but enough to cook 2 kind of good food for a family. As long as I know, you do not need expensive soil to grow leeks. It can grow anywhere.

I´m glad that leeks are not expensive in your country. But sometimes it depends on how much you earn in a month too. When you are talking of cents, are you talking of dollars? If so, who much do you earn in dollars in your country?

Hello! I also planted leeks, this is my third year now.Last year we were flooded, and everything in the garden was destroyed, but this year we had a lot.We like to eat it raw, I don't cook with it, because my husband is a little picky with his food, but me and my daughter eat it alongside soup ( we have different, and many recipes of hearty soups ), she likes to eat it with almost anything, and that makes me happy, because it's very healthy. They are a little expensive here, if the minimum wage is 670, a kilo is around 6-7.In that case, it's not a good investment, but if I spent 5 for two packs of seeds, I'm better off planting them. How do you cook them?

I cut them thin and place them in the water where I cook a soup. The broth that comes from it tastes heavenly. I also do the same when I make creams, vegetable soups with diced veggies. I just feel that leeks and soup go together.

Good morning! To be very honest, marguicha...I do NOT know the price of Leeks here! But something in the back of my mind, tells me that the reason that I am growing them, they are a constant crop...is due to the price....and the ease of growing! I have Leeks in the ground 12 months of the year---one of the few crops (aside from Garlic)that are tenacious enough to live in winter conditions here (and amzingly same family)! There are times, when frost is consistent for days, that I do cover them..but rarely does the frost get deep enough to affect the bulbs, and there is such little moisture in the stocks they seldom freeze! And yes, Leeks are a staple in my diet...used for everything...just like Garlic, and the beauty is ALL of them are usable..just haven't found a use for the roots yet...LOL!!! YOU GROW, Lady...so nice to have a dear friend with the same love of gardening...Take care, special one!

My favourite is a creamy Potato/Bacon or Ham/Leek soup! But yes, there is not part, except the hair roots...I don't use. I have to keep myself in check, tho'...so that I don't use so much of the greens, that I retard the bulb growth...or cut them too soon..LOL! I just stumbled across a "Churros" cooker...said commonly used in Brazil..is that true...looks intriguing?

I am a huge "soup" eater, so will get on to sending you that recipe, as soon as I get home from work this morning! The old expression; "I never met a man I didn't like!"....for me, its; "I never met a SOUP, I didn't like!" LOL! Soup is basicall the mainstay of my diet, as I can put it in the "slow cooker" before going to work in the morning...and "supper is ready" when I get home! Am I wrong, or did you not tell me that you don't like beets? As they are another crop, I find so versatile, and they do last all winter (good winters)here! Have a spectacular day...dear friend!

I don´t use the roots either, but that´s about it. I eat the reat. I´m very interested in your soup. Please send the recipe in a PM. You don´t have to write all of it, just the basics. I have a churro maker and fry them in a pan. It´s one of my favorite ways to bring the grandchildren to my home in Winter.

I am really not familiar with what leeks are. I don't do much cooking yet, but now that I am settled into my new apartment, I hope to start doing more of it. I mostly use onions and garlic in cooking but I should look into using other vegetables for flavor so that I get more variety. I have never looked into buying them because I don't know how to use them. Have a great weekend!!!

Leeks are cousins to onions. Use them for soups, casseroles, stews, you name it. You can cut them in chunks for stews and you can cook them and put it in a blender for soups and creams.

I suppose that in my ountry they are expensive because it´s a veggie that is just becoming usual in out diets. It happened to broccoli sometime ago: we only had cawliflower.

As this Winter I did not go out anywhere because of my low defenses, I decided to do some gardening. I never thought that my plants would do so well. I will not be at home for Christmas as I always go to my daughter´s home. But I will take some of my goodies with me
