hello all! its been a little more than a year since my first out-of-the-country trip. i remember all the planning i did, and topmost of which is where i would actually go :P after considering the attractions, ease of transport, even the language, and of course, the cost of going and staying there, i ended up going to Cambodia and Vietnam. i had no regrets, to say the least. how about you guys and girls, where was your first trip abroad? for neophyte travelers, which country would you suggest they travel to? why? looking forward to your responses :) good day (or ermm night hehe)!

My trip out of the country was actually to France and England with a group called People to People. It was mostly something that was planned for me and I didn't really choose the countries (although I certainly did choose to go on the trip). It was a good trip and it started some more traveling in my case. The year after that I went to Japan and then a couple years after that I went to Australia. For neophyte travelers, I think it depends on where their from and how comfortable they are with certain languages and how comfortable they are with being in a place that may not speak their language. Personally though, I'd recommend Australia as a first trip abroad. There's a ton of things you can do (since you can quite literally travel down their entire east coast or explore a bit of the outback by heading west) and if you're familiar with or are a native English speaker, then you're pretty well set in that regards.

ooh, is People to People a travel organization or a tour group? did you know what country you were going to when you signed up for the trip? out of curiosity, what country could they have suggested that you'd say no to? :)

People to People is a travel organization that tries to get middle school to high school students to experience other countries. I did know the country before I signed up and they even had a big meeting for the county to describe it all it. And I think that if a person wanted to do a different program, they could select a different one and just travel with that group. You wouldn't be able to bond with the group your traveling with as much though (there are multiple meetings beforehand and trips are based on counties). The group I went with for my Australia trip was ISV though. And that one we did get to choose. That one is a volunteer thing for 2 weeks and then an adventure program the next 2 weeks. :)

When my father was alived he used to drive a Caravan and he and my mum traveled all across Europe - while she was pregnant of me she was in Ireland(and for this reason when I was born my head was full of freckles :P). They continued to travel until I was 5 and bought me with them, so I don't really remember what was the first country I visited(probably one between Denmark, Norway and Finland). But I do believe the best country to go for a first trip should be one close to your own - and one you know the language of.

that's a difficult question, you know. I've seen clips and photos of those trips but I don't really remember that 'cause I was too young. The earliest I do actually remember is perhaps when I went to Gardaland(an amusement park in northest Italy, but there were lots of Deutsch people because it's near the German border)

Can I join in this discussion or is this discussion devoted only to them who have been away from their country? If I am allowed to give comment, I would be glad to say or tell which country I would like to visit on my first journey. According to me, the best country to go for the first trip is the country that you know well about it and reachable according to your financial states. I live in South-east Asia and my country situated nearby Singapore. So,I would really like to visit Singapore on my first trip. Singapore is Asian modern country in Asia and its port and harbor is the busiest in the world. I ventured out visiting this country.

My first big out of the country travel was ireland. For my first big trip, I wanted to go where I could understand the language, doing the money conversion was hard enough to remember! It was one of the places that i wanted to go. I had the best experience and learned so much of their culture. I definitely want to go back. For being there only a week & toured every day, there is so much I didn't get to see. Ireland is back on my list!!!

I think that a person wishing to visit his or her first country he or she should choose a country close to his or her home country. It should not have a very different culture for an easy and enjoyable first trip overseas. My home country is England and it is part of the United Kingdom. I visited France when I was a child, Greece at age 14, the Netherlands at age 17 and around Europe by train at 18 years old. At 19 years old I went to Tunisia in North Africa and St Lucia in the Caribbean. I traveled around the world when I was 20 to 21 years old. If a person comes from Germany any European country would be a suitable choice. If the person lives in Australia then New Zealand or Indonesia would be a good choice. I visited a place in Indonesia and amazingly the people hadn't been to Singapore. It was just four hours away by ferry. Now I am in my late thirties I have been to plenty more places in the world. I went to Colombia this year, Canada last year and South Africa the year before last.

i agree with the part about the country being close to the home country, i guess that's why i ended up with another south east asian country: theyre near so tickets are cheap and we have parallels and similarities in terms of cultures so less shock and stress. i do envy you though. traveling is soo much easier i think, when you're in Europe, you just have to take the train and you're already in another country. being in an archipelago in asia, i have to stalk airplane sites for flight seat sales :P (not to mention the visa applications i have to consider) hopefully i'll be as well traveled as you in the near future... here's to more travel for both of us! :)

Not any in particular but I would say somewhere that you know about and that you would be going there for a reason like a particular museum or landmark or something like that.

Like you said it depends on the ease of transport, attractions, language the cost of going there and staying there. The first trip abroad that I made was to Canada. In fact it is the only trip abroad that I have made. Canada has a lot of good attractions. Now in some parts of Canada the speak Canadian-French. In quite a few places though I have noticed that they to speak English though. Yeah it is a little more expensive there than Vietnam but it is cheaper to travel there than it is to fly to Cambodia or Vietnam.
