4 Day Work Week

I think it was a month ago that a proposal surfaced here in the country regarding a 4 day work week both for the public and private sectors. This proposal split the opinion of employees as well as the businessmen to half. One opinion that I've read is that shortening the number of work days will contribute primarily to the well being of the family and additional savings that can then be injected to the economy by having more persons traveling and buying more than their usual quota. The downside according to one opinion is that it will greatly affect the economy because employees will then tend to be more overworked or out of focused when their time is extended in the office, thus resulting to a poor product delivery. Me, I favor a cut in the working days because I can work beyond the usual 8 hours. Having an additional day would then allow me to do other non-work related activities such as attending business seminars or socializing more with friends. What is your opinion on this?

It sounds like a goos idea, not sure about the economics of it though, I am a believer life is too short to spend so much time at work, an extra day at home would be good I think and here in Australia I see the poor people who have to travel to work every day bumper to bumper on the freeways, maybe it would be better to stay a bit long er on the days they are there and have one day extra they don'r have to go through all that travel on the freeways...I think I like the idea..

A work from home can also be a good alternative. Our company has this kind of program implemented and the quality of work of the employee under that program does not dip down. Life will even be shorter if we are stressed at work :)

I read somewhere that this proposal was first done in France. The idea was the with automation if the work is going to be done by the machines, then people should get time off. So that was one of the benefits to be derived out of automation. I actually like this idea. Over the past few decades, the orientation to career and work has outweighed the family considerations and that is really not great for the society in the long run. Cheers! Ram

Most of the jobs I had as a grown man were all commission based jobs... My current retail job is first job I had since I was in high school which isn't a commission based... I'd much rather have a commission job but that's not to say my current job is bad... All my other jobs I had were 14 to 16 hour jobs with 3 days off... I'd go to work around 8 in the morning & don't get home till 10 or so... During Christmas time, I used to get to work around 7 in the morning & get home little after mid-night... And since I was on 100% commission, there were no over-time no matter how many hours I worked during the week... I remember years ago, I worked 6 days of 13 hours & 1 day of 9 hours... I manged to rack up 100 hours on that week... I did that for 3 weeks in a row... Wasn't fun but I made some serious money... But I couldn't do that again... I wouldn't mind 4 10 hour days, 11 if you count for taking an hour for lunch, then have 3 days off...

You are right. Extra free days would allow me to look for other income-generating activities. An extra income would really help a lot. However, I am not too sure about more than 8 hours of work per day. It could have its advantages, like being able to work continuously when I have to finish something. Whatever I would be okay with any plan they would adopt -- as long as I would be compensated properly. Have a nice day, Queen!
