World peace

I was tooling around Facebook trying to help the roomie with something and I hit this "survey" that asked "Do you believe that there will be world peace in 50 years" and "yes" and "no". I clicked "no" and it didn't do anything... hummmm I don't think the survey really wanted to hear "no" but that's the fact. So long as people are people, there will be no peace. I can hear it now, people saying that I'm wrong... but I'm not. So long as anyone has even a perception of having more than someone else, there will be envy and so long as there is envy, there will be war. When the Soviet Union had an iron hand in its "Republics" and eastern Europe, there was peace, the minute it was gone... what happened? What happened in Africa after the colonial powers were out and the "strong man" dictators were out? The fact is that it is hard to find peace even among those who are related and when you throw what is perceived as differences, be they races, religions or tribes, there will be discord. Maybe - MAYBE, some day in the far future we will evolve past this violent behavior, but I honestly don't see it happening any time soon, because the violent ones are the winners... The smart, passivists aren't reproducing at the same rate as the smart, aggressive people. And lets not even get started on the not quite so smart aggressive people! I remember reading a story where because the smart people weren't having as many children as the not so smart ones, the average IQ went seriously down until the ones that ranked as really smart might have an IQ we'd call 80 or 90! Scary huh? So, this is why I don't foresee world peace in the near, or even the not so near future... Maybe not world wide extermination, but not peace. Tell me I'm wrong - please!

I can not tell you that you are wrong. There has never been world peace since the beginning of time. So why should anyone even consider that there will be world peace in 50 years? There is not enough land or food or water for all the people in the world now. So there will be conflicts over the necessities for life. There will always be people who think that their religion is the true religion and other religions are bad or evil. There will always be people who think their group is smarter or prettier or superior and other groups less than them. Man is aggressive just by nature. At least that is my own point of view. Woman, too. For those persons who are passive or peaceful, they almost certainly will get victimized by others. We are not going to have world peace in 50 years. I can almost guarantee it.

Even if there were enough, and honestly 90% of the problem with starvation isn't the lack of food, its the failure of transportation, but you are right, the aggressive ones will try to dominate anyone they can, making the peaceful ones their victims. I suspect this "poll" was done by some idealistic youngster...

World Peace has a a nice ring to it but I do not believe it will ever happen. Certainly not in our lifetime. We are not in the middle of a world war right now but there are conflicts all over the world. And there seems to be more getting really to boil over. Man is not a peaceful animal. Either are any other animals. All creatures are aggressive, some more so than others. Any creature that has no aggression is probably extinct because they were eaten up long ago.

Dang but you're right Elic. I had not given any thoughts to the IQ going down in that way but I guess you are correct there too. It is scary...makes me glad I'm not so young.

I read it in a story - and lets think of The Time Machine where you have to "beautiful, but stupid, surface people" being "food" for the underground "mutants"

There could be world piece in 50 years. All it requires is someone pushing that red button in the ovil office. Once the world is nothing but a smouldering rock it would be quite peaceful. That's about the only way it would happen. Even if we had star trek like technology & could simply make whatever we wanted out of energy people would find reason to quarrel. Someone would always want a better position or more power over their fellow man.

That is so true! Even if every one had everything they needed - or wanted, someone would want something someone else has and try to take it...

There can never be world peace achieved at all in the near or far future, I agree with you. There will always be grounds for quarrels among people. The cause is just about anything. At most times, these are matters which are so small...petty quarrels are really dangerous. This world has never been cut for a peaceful life. We all want it and some of us may be working to achieve it. However, the most powerful ones will never want peace to be ruling the world. They want enmity and fear at its outrage...it is because they earn so much money from out of it. Learn therefor why there are war mongers.

Your idea is right and i agree with you. all time our world polluted by the problem of quarrel and many social problems.

I wish I could tell you that you were wrong, but I think you hit the nail on the head. As long as there are differences between the haves and the have nots there will be war...or at least not peace. I think it will take an active effort on the part of every man, woman and child to overcome these difficulties and most people don't want to make the effort. Thanks for bringing up this topic!

you are so contrary, and I didn't want to "hear" it, I wanted someone to try and PROVE to me it could happen -

Scientifically I could not prove it, but if you were the sort to take leaps of faith I could. Of course that would depend on the depths of your beliefs and would probably be better served in a private discussion.

honestly I don't think there will ever be world peace. People predict things all the time and they never come out. Just when it seems that world peace is achievable in one part of the world, war breaks out somewhere else

Yeah, even in the time when one strong government seems to rule a large area in relative peace, what about the rest of the world? Rome was almost never a peace on its borders, but even if it had been, what about some tribe in the southern parts of Africa or in the then undiscovered Americas? Those Mayan were always at war with each other... I'm sure the Olmec were too!

I love peace and in many ways I am a pacifist. I live in the United Kingdom and I think it will be peaceful in the next fifty years. Though last year some riots happened in some urban areas. One of my friends lives in one of those areas and his wife was blocked from coming home that evening. The streets were very dangerous. Some criminals smashed into shops and stole the contents. It was shocking that a war broke out in Yugoslavia when it split up. I feel frightened for the people that live in Afghanistan if the Taliban come back out. I so wish all people could learn to be non warlike. War kills people and peace should happen everywhere. Good luck to all parts of the world for a peaceful time in the future. I hope there will be world peace in fifty years time.

One hopes most people love peace, but there are far to many people that think if they have the power it will be peaceful... look at the "Arab Spring" there you have people just wishing for freedom and someone has to try and suppress them.

There will never be peace, on earth. We are meant to have peace, once we pass over. Earth, and if there are any other planets that are inhabited, are meant to be "schools" for our souls. We are meant to learn to deal with strife and there will always be those, who come into this world, to create it for us. Evil is also necessary.

As sad as this may sound I don't believe there will ever be world peace. It's a shame as it would be really nice if everyone in the human race could just get along. Unfortunately there have always been wars and these wars have taken place for many reasons. As we progress into the next century there will be a continued shortage of resources including water, food and anything else we need to survive. The situation will evolve whereby you have the most powerful countries in the world fighting and protecting their own resources and also trying to claim the resources from other parts of the world. Global population is also increasing and this is creating further strain on the world's resources. It's nothing but a picture of doom and gloom but this is definitely the reality for the coming years and well into the future also. I really hope that I'm wrong and that we somehow manage to research and use new resources in terms of energy production. The world would be a nicer place to live if there was a strong sense of peace. You are right, Andrew. Research could bring some peace, but even if everyone had enough to sustain themselves, there would be some "strong man" trying to take some of it from others. An example in fiction to read might be the "Riverworld" series by Phillip Jose Farmer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverworld

I would like to say your wrong but I think that world peace would involve an amount of acceptance that some people just can not reach. It is an ancient instinct and when there are people out there playing on that, well, the results are as they are. The fact that evolution has played on that too sure doesn't help matters any but there is that intelligence factor to hang on too I guess.

There is one element that is compromising world peace in a wholesale manner and that is people themselves. Let's face it, as long as people have existed, but really as long as life has existed, because if someone else but humans were the dominant species, who is really not to say that they would not be as petty as us or even more so, thus leading a lot more issues. There will always be someone with an ax to grind and that person will be able to lead people to do things. There are a lot of horrifying consequences with the world the way it is today. There are many times where I wish this was not the case but really, I am horrified that World Peace will only be achieved when all life ends. That is the ultimate realistic, grim truth. The only time World Peace can happen is when no one is alive to enjoy it.

No you are not wrong. As long as man made governments rule this world there will never be peace. Even if there were moments of peace like you mentioned these moments wouldn't last long & we would be right back to killing each other in yet another war. Does that mean that peace is unattainable? No not at all. One day God will step in a put an end to all the wicked which include man made governments. Then his heavenly kingdom with His son Jesus at it's throne will take over & bring about true peace that will never have an ending. The bible predicts all of this in Revelation. There will be signs leading up to that day so we will have a clue as to when this day will be, but if people close their eyes to it & just go about their lives looking toward the governments on the earth for peace instead of where they should be looking then they will be robbed of this everlasting peace just like a thief in the night. It's all there in the bible. All anyone has to do is simply read it's words & put faith in them.

I believe in Revelations, but... I also believe it will be a long time before it gets here... I am really talking about the nature of man, not of Divine Intersession, and that means there would never be peace.

I believe you are wrong, and not because you asked me to tell you that you are "wrong" but because it is possible that we could have world peace in 50 years. This is my logic of thinking. Share what you know, the more you know, the more you will be able to share. Let's take this example. A guy wants to be a football player, but he has a small build and not very tall. Now most would say "You are to small, you would get crushed and it's to dangerous." But the guy is persistent, he really wants to be a football player. He trains with weights everyday, changes up his diet, builds muscle and he makes the team! Apathy never helps anyone, and a positive attitude can do wonders. It might not happen overnight, and it will take a lot of work, but we can achieve great things. World peace operates the same way. Be pro peace, but keep the negative out of it. Mother Theresa was pro peace, but she never attended an "anti-war" rally. It's those small acts of kindness that build and snowball into something greater. Yes, it is absolutely possible for world peace in 50 years, and it starts with one small act of kindness. So, my friend...You are wrong. Very wrong. Many blessings to you though, and thank you for posting this question.

I think it must be great to be this idealistic, and it would be wonderful, but honestly, even if a billion people stood together, that is only 1 in 6 and I doubt we could honestly find that many - Oh, we may find a community that says they live in peace, but let one person be the least bit different and they are in an uproar.

I have not seen this survey on Facebook. I don't think we will have world peace in 50 years! There is to much hate, jealously, selfishness, stubbornness, greed and religious fanatics in the world! I wish it could happen but I really don't see it happening!

I don't either, even if every world leader wanted it, there would be some body wanting to over throw one of them and that would just be a civil war... and as long as religion is a factor in some governments, there will be no peace.
