First, it is NOT true that the people who write antivirus software are responsible for creating the viruses. They actually have their work cut out keeping up with the ones which criminals put on line. There are varying opinions on which is the best AV software. The best informed ones are based on regular testing against both old and new viruses and the results are like a close run horse race: sometimes one software is better and sometimes another. Many AV solutions are free. Others you have to pay for (around $30 a year being the usual price). There is not really any difference between free software and paid software. Some free solutions perform better than some paid ones. Currently the best rated FREE solution is Panda Cloud but this may not be suitable for everyone. The ones which are currently recommended for private users are Avast, Avira and AVG. Personally, I have used Avast for over a year and I like it very much. It is easy to set up and use; warns me of any site which may be dangerous and has not (so far) let any virus through and has successfully protected me from quite a few. Many adult sites are unsafe. I cannot say whether 'most' of them do. It is true however, that many people in the criminal areas of spamming, phishing and other such 'industries' are using trojans and viruses to accomplish their ends and also many of these people are also involved in the 'adult' industry.
