About 2 months ago I purchased a Canon Powershot G12. I have been playing with it under different situations. Was I surprised at the versatility of the camera. While not as good as my Canon D50 it surprised me how close it came in some situations. I do a lot of Sports action shots and was able to capture some indoor shots at a basketball game and a wrestling match. I have used it for Family photos and some news events. This weekend I was able to use it outdoor taking photos of winter activities. As a general purpose camera it is great and very versatile. It is much easier to use when traveling and is smaller and much lighter than my Canon D50. The sports shots are sharp as with my DSLR. The difference is the lag time in the time between pressing the shutter release and the camera recording the data (the Photo). One of the things I learned this weekend was the difference between a high ISO and the Auto mode and the Program mode. This is something I can't do with my DSLR. The photo attached is the Auto mode with a 3200 ISO. I am using this photo as MyLot will only allow one with the post.

Canon powershot series brands are great its functions like DLSR and correctly you comment is more versatile than DSLR. But be careful handling it, mine just 6 months old had been repaired due to over used of lens zoom in and zoom out. Have ready your warranty. but the product is great in almost all situation.

Girls Head - I took this shot trying to get the dancers in a high kick and would have gotten it if the girl had not walked in front of me. This is an excellent example of how lag time can effect your shot. I had anticipated the kick and depressed the shutter when they were half way up in their kick. In that time the girl walked in front of me. It would have happened with the DSLR except I could have been in burst mode so I would have gotten the before head and after head shot.
Because of the number o photos I take I never go without an extended warranty. The one area where the DSLR is better than the G12 is in action shots. With the 1-2 second lag time in the shutter release you really have to anticipate the shot and hope you get it.
