Hire or buy a car

i'm going to Tasmania for 3 months and was wondering if it would be better to buy a car when I get there and then sell it before I go home or rent a car to get around while I'm there. What do you guys think?

It is really popular to rent a car when you travel in my country. So maybe that's a good choice to do.lol, anyway, and the driver may be much familiar with the places and the sights.Wish you a good journey and hopefully this will help.

In my home country England it is pricey to get a car. A person must get road tax, an MOT and car insurance in order to get the car on the road. Many second hand cars are advertized in the local newspaper. I have traveled to Australia three times and it is lovely there. I suggest you rent a car for three months. You could find out the likely price for that on the Internet. I know driving laws in Australia are strict similar to the situation in my home country. My guess is buying a car in Australia would be quite pricey and you would have to sell it before you left it in three months time. Good luck planning your trip to Tasmania.

That's an interesting option you might decide to go with on your trip...It might work out cheaper to do this than pay for a hire car for the whole time you are there..Are there any tourist networking websites or resources that could help you arrange ahead to pick up a car on arrival,or would you have to go car shopping locally from a cold start once in country? I have yet to visit "Down Under" Myself, but I've heard of Australians visiting the UK networking, buying and selling on camper vans to use while here...Australian Cousins who'd visited here for a few months did this, buying a car for use on their trip and sold it before returning home..I thought if it worked out more cost effective it would be a good idea! good luck with the trip!

Is it cheap the cars in Tasmania? And is it so easy to buy a car just like buying groceries in the supermarket? In my country, to buy a car you need to do a lot of paper work - insurance, legal matters and road tax. Is it cheaper to buy a car than just rent one for the three months you're there? I think you can get a car on a three months lease. That should be cheaper than buying or renting a car.

Good day suzyweasley, With reference to your main topic, it will be helpful to your decision if you will also check your purpose of stay in Tasmania. As what you have said, you will be staying there for 3 months. If your purpose is just to have a service for your transportation needs, then, it will be easy to hire a car, thus this will not really require you to spend on car maintenance. However, if you intend to go back after 3 months, then, settle for a brand new one so you can be sure that you have your car for transportation the moment you comeback. However, please also take into consideration your budget. As this will surely play a vital role in the decision that you will going to make. Cheers.

Hi suzyweasley, For me I'd rent a car if it would be cheaper (for the duration of your use) because it would only be a one time transaction. I mean you'd only need to rent the car, use it and then give it back. You wouldn't have to go through the hassle of purchasing it and then looking for a buyer. BUT if you search for a sure buyer ahead of time then maybe it would be less of a hassle in selling the car.
