Quitting (real) smoking and my new "electronic" habit

Were you surprised to see me create a new discussion? Or did my subject title catch your attention? Either way, I'm glad you took the time to be here. I just wanted to let you all in on some good news (well, sort of). I've quit smoking since March 4, 2012. I thought I could do it "cold turkey"...the way I did so over a decade ago. But exactly the day (March 5), after a hearty lunch at some pizzeria, I was soooo in the mood for a cigarette. While strolling inside a mall, I chanced upon a stall that sells e-cigarettes (won't mention the brand name here, as I am sure it is againt policy). So I stood there and asked the sales associate about the product and the pros and cons of purchasing an e-cigarette for myself. I will not go into details and the mechanics of e-cigarettes here. There's the internet and wikipedia for that. Anyway, about half-an-hour or so later, I walked away with my purchase. Here's my verdict...it's not as "good" or "satisfying" as the real thing. But it will have to do. My smoking has gone down from 4 cigarettes a day, to only about 15 to 20 minutes of puffing the electronic version every OTHER DAY or two. Yeah, sometimes I miss smoking the real thing. But i know myself...once I get to smoking actual cigarettes again, I will immediately feel guilty succumbing to it. So there. I guess I am just putting this out there so that next time I feel the urge to smoke the real thing, I will only look this up and see how much progress I've done so far. Has anybody here tried substituting e-cigarettes for actual cigarettes? What was your experience like? Are you now totally off the cigarette habit?

I would not have bothered with my smoking if I somed as little as you do. I used to smoke up to 2 packages a day. It quit with Chantix and help but I know that I´m a heavy smoker who is not smoking. I cannot smoke one ciggie ever as I would start all over again in a week. I´m "clean" now for over 3 years.

I hope you go on being a "smoker who is not smoking". That´s how I call myself, that´s what we are. So we have to watch out every moment.

If you were only smoking 4 a day, you were below the physical addiction level for nicotine (5 a day) - so you don't actually need a replacement at all for that. You just need something to replace the habit of sticking something in your mouth: a pencil would be a lot cheaper than an e-cig.

But what I really like is the menthol variant. I actually used to smoke Marlboro (the one in black and green packaging). I love the way it felt sooooo cool inside my throat! Aww....I miss smoking! But then again, I've come so far already
