Some Distractions...

Today my student was telling me she needs to go back to her old self. The one that studied hard and was never absent in classes. The one that focused attention only to learning and never got distracted. She's newly married, about a month ago, she got her new house and now she fell in love with plants. She's worried she's too distracted with these that she won't be able to get back to her old self. As always i told her that those distractions are understandable. They're new, they're interesting and they're fun but you don't have to give up enjoying them to go back to your old boring self. You can enjoy both together and actually do both together. Study and when you're tired, appreciate your plants by taking care of them or just staring at them. Then when you feel relax, pick your book up again! I too am distracted with my new hobby which i've mentioned already in another discussion. I'm crazy over longboarding. But i still work and play. Some distractions are necessary! I work hard, I play hard! This is my rule, this is my style!

That's true Toni, some distractions are indeed necessary to make our life colorful. We can always turn to them, whenever we are tired , lonely or even angry. It is a diversion from our usual self and routine. Mine, watching TV and this.

When i was a university student, there came a time where i enjoyed my friends' company (getting drunk) than studying. But after awhile (a month), i realized that why neglect my studies when i can do both. So i studied hard but played hard (sometimes harder)too!

Hi Toni! I agree with you that some distractions are necessary to break the monotony of life, else life will become dull and drab.

hi toniganzon I think what you told her is really true. One can fit all sorts of thing s one wants to do with just a little maneuvering things around a bit.Learn to focus onthe things you want to do , then go on to other things and put your focus there also. Youth belongs to the young so tell her to be glad she is young and bright, an interesting combination of going to school and also focusing on other aspects of her life. She will be well rounded and learned too.

Good thing that she knows how to listen to me and try to follow what i tell her. I'm sure she's doing what i told her earlier.

Life has its chapters so I also think that it's normal. Well, if she wants to be her old self again, I guess she'll be busier than before. She wants to clash her old life with her new one. Attention has its limits and it can only be divided into so much. She might end up getting pressured by all of the changes, and would probably suffer depression in the process.

Which she did about 3 years ago. She went into depression due to frustration and quit studying. But she bounced back eventually realizing her mistake.

In our lives as human beings, I believe we all have the "right" time to time to give us some distraction. Students were talking about, well, just in the subject matter! Speaking of us adults are right to grant us the leisure, as we all relax dedicating to our favorite hobby. Who works for example is just that part of his spare time spend to the things that most prefer to do. In essence, you, you said that you have a new hobby, but I do not understand what it is. Can you explain better please?

hi toni. 'i work hard, i play hard'... something that i would say to myself often as well. after all, all work and no play makes allen a dull boy. the words 'dull' and 'allen' should never be said in the same sentence. anyway, i don't see these stuff as distractions but rather as mere 'breaks' from what i'd normally do. hobbies are as important as our line of work. some hobbies we pick up are directly related to our work. other hobbies are way off. anyway, i agree with what you told your student. she should continue appreciating her plants and whenever she is tired from studying, she could focus her attention to her plants. how's the longboarding going toni? when are you posting a pic or video of yours while longboarding? lol!

I missed doing crazy things with you (hope others who might read this won't think naughty)

'You wanna see a video of me falling off hard on my butt?' - a resounding YYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!! 'Not ready for any videos yet but i could do some sexy pose on my board if you want!' - another resounding YYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! 'Give me 6 months to one year and i'll give you a video of my carving on my board on a bikini!' - i'll take less than six months if it is available. six months is fine as well as long as it is a skimpy two piece fire red bikini! a year is too long as the world might end in december 2012 so i'll gladly pass on that offer. basically, the earlier the better. 'Have a wonderful day Allen.' - schucks! you too, toni! 'So nice of you to cheer me up today.' - glad i could be of service toni.should i send you the bill and my paypal account so you can send me the funds and pay me for my services? lol! 'I missed doing crazy things with you (hope others who might read this won't think naughty)' - wait, what were those crazy things toni? care to remind me? lol! (its really none of their business what we do her toni, we're all adults. lol! quick! grab the adult tag for this discussion!just kidding folks, my discussions and posts for toni are always rated pg-13.) anyway, nice chatting with you toni. surf boarders say 'hang ten!', what do longboarders say, pray tell? cheers!!!

this is what people call, time management, balancing what you need to do and what you want to do... i am also doing this, i love face painting and i love to do it with my kids but since i work full time, i get to squeeze it in when i get home..atleast it relaxes me

True! Not unless you know how to balance your time, you would be in such a mess. But when something is new, it's more exciting and we don't think of time at all. Now time management gets out of hand in this case.

Will you distracted with mountainbiking if I asked you to come along to hit the trail? I think you will. It's much more fun than longboarding. It reduces more stress since you become part of the nature.

I used to do that and i can't refuse if you invite me at all. But then again, longboarding to me is something new and the adrenaline rush is as much as mountainbiking. I can be with nature as well when i'm longboarding.

Not now. You will see me falling off often. I would rather let you see me after 6 months or a year. And don't worry, i would love to share a video of me when i'm that good.

You have given her great advice. And they key word is focus. There should always be time for everything, at least we hope so. But you're right, she should focus on her studies first, then focus on her plants. They can both coexist.

Yes I think what you said is absolutely true. One has to learn to manage everything and everything will be fine. Just studying 24 hours a day will make life dull and boring and I do believe hobbies are essential in life. And I think what you said to your student was absolutely true

This is purely a matter of perception. She is taking her likeness or fondness as distraction. You have given her the correct advice of enjoying and doing both the things together. I agree with you some distractions are really necessary.

Thank you. We do need a little distraction now and then or we will easily get burned out and just stop doing what we really want.
