So..everybody knows India has more poor.. But it is because we go on wars with our neighbors so often. It is also because we dont have any incentives worth mention to bring down population. As of now, government makes a one time payment to people who stop having third child. If it could be made for 10 years or age 45 for women, people would be more careful. And any such payment should only be made into bank account so middlemen who take away the incentives disappear. Instead of 500 the incentive can be increased to 6000 annually. And there can be periodic revisions as well. Lots of people would be tempted to take up that offer because poor have children to supplement their income. If they already have such supplementary income they would not have more children. In 10 years time, the government would start feeling the relief. As to the rest of world, there would be less fights, less arguments, less terrorism, less pollution, and did I say, less immigration?

Going to war for the sake of war instead of peace will no doubt impoverished the masses except the ruling elite and fire-arms industry. An unconrollable population expansion will not just increase the likihood of rise in number of poor in the country but also resulted in a steep rate of increase in natural resources extinction annually. It is not the population increase that is endangering our present world but rather the rate of population increase in our present world is alarming due to the absence of any proper family planning in sight for the near and long term future in relative to our diminishing food supply, arable land for agriculture, clean water source, and longer life span due to medical advancement.

What you suggested may have some basis in inducing the hardcore poor to not have more than 2 kids. But in my opinion, it is the economy situation of the hardcore poor that needs a long term solution. And education is one of the important ways, if it is not the most important, to bring up the economy status of the hardcore poor. Education also opens up people's minds to think better and wider. The government must make sure all the children are to attain school for at least 9 to 12 years in order to have a basic education. The schools must be free and accessible to all. When most of the population is educated or trained, the economy can then move to a higher income type with jobs that commensurate with the talents available in the market. When a middle class becomes the majority of the society, the mindset and perception of life will be different from what it is today where they think more labor will generate more income for them. They will know that a skilled worker can earn 10 times or more than a non-skilled worker. They then will try to concentrate their resources in giving the best possible education to the child. And so they will plan for their family. Getting the best for their child is the biggest incentive for people who are not well off not to have more children.

I know of many rich who have more than 4 children, and many poor who have one. :) In any event, it is also about holding a holistic approach. Educating people is time consuming. There are parts in our country where educating people is difficult. These are strongholds of Maoists, Naxalites, and some people with extremely orthodox views. If I try to tell them about family planning chances are that they would slash my belly and hang my body prominently for everybody to see what the repurcussions can be. Not one person will be able to come forward as a witness because of fear. So..educating is a good idea no doubt. But it will take a long time before it can be achieved and we need results as of yesterday, right? The government cant manage such a large population ..there are simply too many things and too many people to manage. If they do one thing against a person, and that person belongs to a region, the issue becomes sensitive because local leaders stand up. In godfather, it was for justice. Here local leaders are in it for ego and political advancement.

So local leaders stand up for wrong more often than not. They behave like petulant kids and show others insults where none were intended. They also bring up old issues to incite people. So it is always an attempt to calm waters. Diversity is tough to manage..

It sounds like to me that you guys have everything backwards. Free money from the government is not the answer. The answer is education and incentives to work. India could have a very good thriving economy if the people took on the incentives themselves and relied less on the government. For the government to pay the people this money, they have to take it from someone else. Who will they they take it from? If you take it from businesses, they will fold up and go other places, or fold up because they cannot survive. Take it from the rich, and you do not have enough money. Who is left to take it from, only those that they are giving it to. Responsible hard working people are the only thing that can make this work. Don't say there aren't jobs either. People can be entrepreneurs and start up their own businesses. Even if it only selling eggs at first, and then expanding from there. Do not let the government and other "So called leaders" tell you different. Get the government out of you lives and take the responsibility on yourselves and make it work.

No fatcat..free money is already going there..:( I mean government classifies them as poor so they get homes that are free of cost. They get heavily subsidized food grains and even cooking fuel. When they feel no pinch why would they stop to think about population? Education as you know takes a long time and we are late as it is in implementing family planning policies. I dont agree with you about entrepreneurship. More people become drunkards and gamblers when they dont have anything better to do. There is so much competition thanks to the population. And the big players are not willing to let of even a drop of their market share. I am only saying that when you are allowing rich, middle class, or the poor those basic exemptions classify a part of it as something for two children only. So if government gives 100000 as basic exemption then I am asking say basic exemption is 85000 but you are eligible to claim another 15000 if you have only two children. Should you choose to have more, we will be taking away all your past, present, and future concessions. You would pay taxes on higher slab - retrospectively. That can scare people..

Hi, Vandana! Your question reminds me of the following Biblical verses which I hope can give you answers to your concerns: "A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops." -- Proverbs 28:3 "Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people." -- Proverbs 28:15 "By me [Wisdom is speaking in this verse] kings and rulers issue decrees that are just." --- Proverbs 8:15

It is a fact that the policies made in one part of the country affects the rest of the world. For instance when one country has internal wrangles and civil wars due to poor policies, its neighbors’ and the rest of the world have to take in refugees as citizens run away from their own country. This puts a strain on the host country’s economy and resources.

That is honest..lol My view on this is, another person can be a refugee, but should have no rights to stay in the country for more than 3 to 6 months. If he wants to settle down permanently then, he or she should offer three generations of male progenies ..immediately following the arrival to the government of host nation for armed forces. In other words, citizenship requires the person to show some loyalty and willingness to lay down lives. Merely granting citizenship randomly should not be done. People would think twice before migrating and creating undesirable upheaval elsewhere.

Even money can only help so much when you are fighting centuries old "traditions". One of the things you need to do is publicize "success stories" - show people who limit the number of children they have and show that they and their children are more successful and have better lives because they have fewer children. Have sitcoms and movies that show young couples who are more successful, start their families later, and have fewer children while overcoming obstacles and pressure from their families. The media and entertainment industry can have a far reaching effect if used properly.

Well, our former prime minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi had only two kids, her father had only one child, and her son had two children..so examples were always there but people dont want to read through them. Even religion advocates only two kids..but it is competition between religions that is being encouraged so more children are necessary to keep up the numbers and percentages. Our popular heroes have only two kids. :) Everybody knows..

Yes you are right vandana. At the same time India should stop arms race. The money spends to purchase arms can be utilized for eradicating poverty. Steps should be taken to create new job opportunities. Population can be made as wealth by educating them. More industries should be established to create job opportunity for the educated and trained people. Education should be free up to secondary level. I'm not against population control. But population is not always curse.

You know what I was just thinking..they've taken up massive project of metrolines here in our town. But it is going to be a single train! Out there they have double deckers..We need to make it good enough for double deckers and even goods because we haven't got money to pay for petrol..and diesel. So why roads, why not electrical system..nuclear fuel is anyway round the corner. Why short sighted views - temporary fixes everytime. Why did they have to encourage so many cars? Rich go shopping they have kitty parties in fuel guzzlers - isn't all that waste of petrol? Shouldnt that money get into some useful enterprise? And to keep the rich happy, we start formula one, and flyovers. Pathetic! Get rid of those cars..we dont need them. Everytime a person buys a large car..tax him..tax him more so that he hesitates to sell and buy a new one every second year. He can afford it..
