Today is ‘AKSHYA TRUTIA’

This is a festival for us, starting from today the farmers sow seed in the rice fields. I and others here observe it in a different way; early morning my wife sent earthen pitch full of water, some sweets, seasonal fruit like water melon to my daughter and sister’s home, my mother in laws home and home of our Pundit (priest) who performs puja in our home during festivals. Whatever might be the basic reason behind such tradition, I believe it binds us together. Do you have any such festival? Please share your views, opinions and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor Sir: Akshya Truitia -- yes In Tamil Nadu also it is celebrated -- people are encouraged to buy things that are white in colour -- for example platinum, gold etc. some people buy milk or rice depending on their capacity. Banks also did excellent business in sale of gold coins. People bought online also yesterday. There is a report on that in Times of India.

No we don't have a festival like that here that I'm aware of. I think though it's a great idea though, we should celebrate the planting of crops. As it's those crops that feed us and provide in many ways are not thought much about here in the US. Enjoy your festival!

I don't know what your climate is in India is but here it's ripe for planting and will continue to be so until the end of May. Our farmers are happy they can get out there and start sowing seed. They have all their equipment ready to nourish and control pests in the fields. Seeds are being hauled in by the semi truck load and the farm equipment dealers are ready to sell new equipment! Our celebration of the advent of this season is in March. We say goodbye to "cabin fever" and say hello to the beginning of new growth. We celebrate by filling pretty, pastel baskets with fake green grass and placing hard boiled eggs and candy on top of that and offer it to our children and visitors in our homes. Then we have a huge feast for as many people as we can get to come to our home! More importantly we Christians celebrate Christ's ascension into heaven to sit on the right hand of God. I believe this season was picked for these activities due to the promise of new life in the fields. I was raised by Christian farmers.

Sir, Good to know about this tradition of yours. For us there is no such tradition clubbed with this one. These days the jewelers make it a hype for their brands and media add on the interest of the people. So people wait for these days to buy gold etc.

Hello Sir, I know only Akshaya Thrithya is a day which is good for buying gold ornaments. I don’t aware about the importance of the day otherwise. It is believed that if you buy gold on this day the prosperity will remain for one long year. The sowing of seeds is started with the festival Vishu in our place (which was on 14 April this month). Soon after the Vishu farmers are busy in their paddy fields for cultivation. Take care of your health

Yes it binds us. It happens to every community with the same customs and traditions making some deserving to preserve and enriched. I just wish that everybody and in everyday we should be like these. When people can just forget the conflicts between individuals, to share what you have that they might be pleased and happy for the blessing. And that the cycle will go on and on until the whole community is covered with love and happiness and peace will thrive.
