On Promo Fares

I just got off the website of a budget airline here in our country. I was so disappointed because I thought I'd be able to get a good deal for a trip to HongKong. I got this email announcing low fares to selected destinations. It showed there that it only costs PHP688 (approx $17), one way. So, I hurriedly clicked the link to the website and tried to book a flight for me and my husband this coming September. To my surprise, the total was still around PHP11,000++. How could PHP688 x2 equal to PHP11,000? Then, I found out all the rest of the charges was for taxes and other fees. I just closed the window and went back myLotting.

I have stopped availing them for trips. It's difficult to sign up and there are a lot of 'additions', so I just do those things when flights are far from the date of purchase. You could get a good deal with them, just don't expect much. When I went to Singapore, I had to wait several hours because of delays. When I came back the flight was also very much delayed that jetlag overtook me and I was only thankful that I met an old friend in the airport and she 'assisted' me. However, if you don't avail these things, you'd be in for a lot of surprise because it's really expensive. Your Php 11,000.++ for Hongkong is already cheap because it's usually Php 8,000.++ each. Though I got mine for Php 4,000.++ at one time but still since I don't live in Manila, the fair from my city was double the price of my fair to Hong Kong. In more ways than one, you are fortunate. I have stopped availing for now because my bank account is crying with the trips I did last year and early this year. I only availed several for local trips (business not leisure) for now. But it's good. Just don't travel during peak or summer vacation time because there were a lot of flights cancelled and delayed because of Manila Air Traffic (and pollution). A friend of mine was scheduled to fly at 6pm and that had actually flown at around 2am - it's crazy and the stress is not worth it. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Yeah, that's already a good price, unless you'd like to go to Clark (it's cheaper there). If you really want to get these things you need to log in at dawn, around 2am or 3am when the internet is fast and transactions are minimal.

I'll try that, if I have the chance to. Do you know around what time of the month these offers come by?

Really, you think the price I got is good enough? I heard from a few friends that they also managed to get zero fare and a minimal tax, but it's not very easy to get one.

I think you could really go anywhere for a cheap fare, if your date for going to that country/place is like, a few months after today.. A year later, would only cost you a few pesos even.. I have a relative who is very good at finding promo tickets.

Apparently, I can't book flights too early, because there are a lot of things I need to consider, like my husband's schedule at work. It would be good to be able to do that, to avail of better deals. But, it may just end up getting cancelled if I push for it. I think the best I could do is book a flight, 3-4 months before the schedule.

In my home country we have no frills airlines with budget prices called Easy jet and Ryan Air. Sometimes they have a sale and no fares. That doesn't mean the flight is free of charge. There are payments for security, airport tax, fees and baggage costs. Even if the fare is 17 dollars it will be a whole lot higher once all the charges are shown. These days airport tax is the highest I have ever seen it. For three people a long haul flight from London to Buenos Aires return can have more than one thousand pounds airport tax in it. The actual airfare is very low. Good luck getting a cheap flight to Hong Kong this September from a different airline.

Do they actually still get some profit out of those taxes and fees? I mean, why would they sacrifice giving free fares, and make the government richer with all those taxes that the passengers would pay for.

I have availed for promos like this for a few times already. Yes, it's disappointing how they try to attract us with their very unbelievable low fares and then find out that we still have to pay for a large amount in the end. They should have put "trip to Hongkong for $17 only excluding taxes and other charges" that way we can understand. Anyway, if we have to think we still get the lesser amount than the regular fare. At least that can make us feel relieved.

I think there were fine prints somewhere on the website but, you know, when you're too excited to get on the deal, you couldn't notice those. I just hope i could still get a better deal than that.

That is the trouble with a lot of deals. I have many miles saved for many airlines but often it is not worth flying as the fuel tax etc alone is 40% of a ticket and I can most likely find a good deal to pay the same price, use no miles and even earn them. Keep searching as there will be great deals out there if you know where to look.

Yeah, I'm going to stick around and look for more deals. I hope to get one for our birthday month celebration this October. I haven't been to HongKong.
