Lucky to be Bi-lingual

A friend of mine got a really good compensation package for his ability to speak Spanish. He is half Filipino, half Puerto Rican, and although, his Spanish wasn't perfect, he is able to communicate with Hispanic customers in the US, Canada and US Territories. He gets almost as much as I'm getting - and I was the manager of the English speaking team, while he was a Sales agent. Even if he doesn't get extra incentives, his basic pay plus allowances gets very close to my net pay. This is a common set up for employees with special skills. After a year, he got a job in Columbia, where he is also compensated more for his ability to speak good English. Do you speak multiple languages? What benefits have you experienced for speaking different languages?

I speak 3 languages in total and understand a 4th.I speak my own language,Bulgarian, Italian and English, obviously. I can also understand Spanish and if I have to explain simple things in Spanish i can use my knowledge of Italian to do that. So far, I don't have much benefits from speaking more that one language but this is because I'm still in high-school and I just don't need them so often but a few days ago I had to find a part time job and the fact that I spoke more than one language got me chosen instead of other candidates. I believe that speaking many languages is good mainly for the career and it also removes the language barrier which always extends a persons horizon by far.

Oh, I'm sure you'll find some way to use those skills later in your life. Right now, you may want to strengthen that and take care of those skills. You'll never know where it'll take you, someday. So, how did you get to learn all those language?

Wow. We don't have foreign language subjects in grade school and high school. For college, its elective. We mainly study English and our own national language. Are you able to use those skills, on a daily basis, especially Italian and Spanish?

I learned Bulgarian because I live in Bulgaria,I also learned English in school and my high-school specializes in roman languages so I chose Italian.Spanish and Italian are very close so understanding Spanish is easy enough.I also know some basic phrases in Japanese but nowhere near enough to be able to have or understand a conversation.

French sophistication... - is famous; but this guy is; or rather was not French; it was me, many years ago.
I speak English, my mother tongue; very good French; and pretty good Spanish. I know French because when I was still just an infant, my parents, or father, sent me to a French school in London. Because I was so young, it didn't take me long to become completely bilingual, complete with near-perfect French accent. Nearly all the classes were in French, so I was steeped in French language and culture from a young age. Consequently I was somewhat out of touch with British culture; apart from Pop culture: I loved Pop music, TV and movies. When I was 12, I changed over from a French to an English school, and of course there were "holes" when it came to knowledge of my own country. My academic career was not a very successful one; and I quit formal education at 16. Although I went on to further education; and did pretty well. Being steeped in French culture created within me a passionate love of French culture; and literature, as well as the French nation; and people; a Francophile. Whcih I think is a good thing. Also, knowing French was an asset when it came to leanring Spanish, which I did on vacation in Spain; as well as at college. I came to love Spain; and the Spanish people too: I'm also a Hispanophile.

So, you're not using those skills in your job? You can get a side line job as English tutor or teacher for Chinese and Koreans, here in our country. That's good money right there, if you need it, though.

Sad to say that Spanish was removed from the curriculum (both from high school and college). I finished 12 units of Spanish in college but now I can hardly speak even a sentence in Spanish. My dad, of course a pure Filipino, can speak very fluent Spanish and Latin. Yes, knowing several languages is a plus in applying for a job.

I have heard that Spanish next school year will be part of the school curriculum. That's a good news isn't it?

It would really help open more opportunities for extra earnings for those who gets to enroll in those classes. However, I'm not sure if those subjects can really make on fluent with the language, but they can always further their learning by practicing and getting advanced lessons.

I could understand third language named Hindi but difficult to use it to communicate. Sooner I will learn. If we learn that here in India it is well and good to move throughout India. My hubby learned four languages and it is easy for him to communicate with those people easily.
