I feel so sorry for my 16 year old son this morning, he has been 'banned' by Microsoft on his X Box live because he bought some Xbox Live Points from somebody other than them!! We live in a little village and he is away from most of his friends and uses his X Box live to keep in touch with his mates and also to get Sky TV through to his room. Now he can do nothing without buying himself a new console!! He bought some X Box Live 'points' from a website he was recommended not knowing that is wasn't allowed, his console is now 'banned' so he can't even sell it because no one will want a 'banned box'; he telephoned Microsoft who have said that it his console that is banned not him so if he buys another he won't be banned, so I guess he's just adding more to Bill Gate's bank account!! This seems so wrong, he is just a schoolboy who wasn't doing anything illegal! Have any other members had similar problems with Microsoft.

I know nothing about x-box. But that does sound like quite a headache. So if someone is selling fraudulant points it's the end user who's punished? I would think the points should of been "rejected" and him just out of the point money. All these gadgets have an angle to benefit their wallets.

Hi and once more apologies for the late reply!! This is exactly my opinion, these big companies just seem out to fleece the small users, and with these products these people are generally young ones.

I am not an Xbox user but I have been in Computer Support for much of my life, so this interested me. The reason why a console is banned, rather than an account, ought logically to be because the firmware has been modified, the box has been opened or some action of that nature has been taken. Just dealing illegally in 'points' or buying accounts ought to involve the accounts rather than the hardware/firmware. However, this appears NOT to be the case because I find several instances in the Xbox Forum where consoles are stated to have "been permanently banned from access to Xbox LIVE due to involvement in the purchase, sale, theft, or transfer of Xbox LIVE account(s). This conduct was discovered by an investigation into the activity occurring on the console." I think that this is harsh, to say the least! I have been reading (or trying to read) the Code of Conduct and Terms of Use: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Legal/CodeOfConduct http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Legal/LiveTOU They are NOT the sort of document which a 16 year old would be at all likely to read in full - even this 72yo who IS fairly used to reading such stuff is having trouble identifying the exact reasons for a console ban! I also looked at some of the posts here: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/2366.aspx (which was a lot more helpful) Although there seems to be no (legal) way of "unbanning" a console (it is now simply a rather expensive door-stop), you should be aware that the hard disk in it is not included in the ban and MAY be transferred to a new console, so any data he had on it will not be lost. I am sorry for your son, of course, but he DID do something illegal according to the Terms of Use and, since he is not unintelligent, he probably had half an inkling that what he was doing was risky, to say the least. It was an expensive mistake to make but, hopefully, he will learn by it when/if he gets a new box (which I hope he does)!

Again I must apologise for the delay in replying, I am having terrible problems wit my BT Internet!!!!! What is so annoying is that Jack has had his X Box for 3 years and always purchased authentic points until a friend told him of this site, he actually bought these 'fraudulent' points last year (aged 15) and has since this bought more authentic ones He didn't realise that it was 'illigal' but as far as I'm concerned it is the people selling these points who should be penalised rather than the person purchasing them, they are the ones profiting from it. My daughter tels me that this problem was featured in a recent "Watchdog" programme and that it a very common problem, with many people being banned for very minor problems. Seemingly one user was banned for changing the colour of his aviator!!!! Jack has managed to locate a reasonable priced console from a friend and so will soon be up and rnning again (on THEIR Live Points!!!!!) and has certainly learnt his lesson!! I am just thankful that he turned down the offer of one of the new consoles for last Christmas.j
