I turned the air conditioners on at my house this evening. I am a really grouchy person when I am hot and sticky so we turned them on. Some of us have to get to sleep early at night before it cools off really well, so having the air conditioner running will help a lot in that situation. Tell me what you do about keeping cool. I used to never turn my air conditioner on until around July. I am older now, summer seems hotter now, and I am in a house that has two central cooling units so it is more efficient.

I can not stand it hot! and I budget for the fact I will run my a/c a lot in the summer. Also my other half and I are computer nerds, and gamers and computers do not like the heat, at all. SO to protect our investments we keep the house cooler all year around, which has the added bonus of keeping us happier and more comfy!

I give my computers their own fans to protect them from overheating. Most of the time until now it has been cool enough, but I just had to give in.

It seemed to help our modem and router last year to have the fan. The AC vent is directly above the desk top and that helps. I know a bit about the necessity of keeping the computers cool, my first hubby was an AC technician in the Navy and his job included making sure the units for the computer rooms worked. I do get hot working at the laptop even, so I have a fan to mostly cool me. My cooling pad for the computer broke, need to get a new one.

the fans do what they can, but compters run hot natually, however if you can cool them below their 'normal' running tempature then they actually run better and have a longer life span. That is why big computer labs are soo cold, and why big time gamers/computer programers will actually water cool their systems. However my hubby and I can't afford the water cooling, and not everything we have can be water cooled anyway, so we just budget for higher power bills. Also logically, if you put a fan in a hot room, it just blows hot air, now blow that hot air over something that is generating heat and it creates a heater. Not fun to work infront of during the summer! Not to mention the added dissadvantage of the eletronic device working slower and harder when it doesn't have too. This was a hard learned lesson after I lost my second serverr system and I couldn't figure out what happened to it, then I met my hubby and he showed me the folly of my ways. :)

I'm pretty sure that I feel the heat more now than when I was younger... I have to say that I actually rather like just sleeping with a sheet on me - even PARTIALLY one me. I have to say that when I was MUCH younger, and lived in a house without a.c., we stuck a window unit in the living room and Maggiepie slept the entire summer in there, I was reasonably happy with the fan in the window blowing over me, even it it was still 90º at MIDNIGHT!

Sounds like when we would visit the grandparents in south east Oklahoma growing up. They may have been in their late seventies when they got a swamp cooler. Otherwise, in the summer the beds all went to the porches or even to lineoleum in the yard.

Its too humid for a swamp cooler to do much around Austin, but apparently that first summer we were here, that's what they had in the rent house...

Ours been on for about 3 weeks already but that's because my honey is home all the time and always hot. He has a traveling fan that where ever he sits the fan comes with him. If it was just me I would turn our air conditioner up to 85 for the summer and save on the bill but Mr. always hot needs it on 80. Can't wait till he pays the bills

I like it at 80, usually. For some reason paying the bills does not bother my hubby. We are on a rolling average for our bill. I need the cooling mostly to sleep at night, and it was not cooling off in time for me to sleep.

We're on a plan to were we pay the same every month but after a year they redo it and average it out to see if they lower or raise it so I don't want to abuse it cause I don't want it to go up. Right now we're paying 94 a month and our bill would actually be way over 120 in the summer, and that's a 1 bedroom

I somehow fee claustrophobic in a room with an a/c. I prefer my windows open. The fan does the cooling. There being lots of greenery around including the lawn I have on the terrace we do not feel the heat although at times even fans do not help but we are used to this situation.

This is an exceptionally hot and humid year. I really love the times of year when I can have the windows open and smell the growing things.I agree, the trees and greenery certainly do help. I can walk downtown and when I reach the edge of my property it is like the bushes are exhaling coolness. My house is more comfortable than some in the summer. However, my son has to get to sleep while it is still hot outside and now I will be needing to as well.

I'm sweltering right now. In my room there is no place for an air conditioner. We have one that I could have in here but the windows have never opened in 60 years here. A family member tried to get them to open, but they must be nailed shut or glued shut with all the paint. Every year I just use a fan in here. In the late evenings .. around 12 midnight I take a sponge off in my room.. I carry water in with me in the evening and a wash basin... and take a wash off to wash the sweat off me and then I am able to go to sleep.

When our older units for the ac did not work as well as these, I would take my kids swimming at the city pool in the evening. That lowered our core body temperatures. I then froze plastic bottles full of water to wrap in a towel to have in bed to keep cool until the temps dropped. I got to where I would use personal water bottles with pop up tops, so if the kids woke up they also had a cold drink.

Ive never had an air conditioner before to be honest, and I dont plan on it. It costs so much it isnt even funny just to run it for short periods and not often. We have fans, and we have a swimming pool as well which helps. The temperatures have been really high here 25C - 35C and Im just melting. Where I petsit they ahve air conditioning and I enjoy it but not getting use to it as I wont pay the high costs of it.

The central units are much more economical than window units to run. You are far enough north you probably do not get as hot as we do usually. If I had a swimming pool I know it would help immensely. Your temperature range is comparable to 77-95 F. Right now we are at 87 F. I find 95 to be a little on the warm side, but we will top 100 several times this summer.

Personally this might be one of the reasons I enjoy living in Washington state as it usually is a lot cooler here than most places, and most of the time you can live without an air conditioner except for maybe July and August if that. I usually just leave a window or two open and a Fan if needed. But as we get older it is harder to keep cool. Sometimes just making sure you have a lot of excess water to drink will help to keep you hydrated and feel a little cooler as well.

It is very beautiful here around the Seattle area where I have lived since 1995. It is truly god's country with all the trees, mountain views, etc. I sometimes get quite tired of the rain a lot of the time, but you get used to the weather when you live here, and never know when you are going to need a coat.

Fill empty bottles or jars with water and freeze them if you can do that. Wrap them in a light towel and use as a cold pack. Another thing, if you have a fan, put a frozen container in front of the fan to make the breeze cooler.

You can set a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan and have the breeze blow on you, that helps. Yes, getting wet and washing off cools you too.

I either enjoy the sun, or migrate to my basement for the day, usually my basement, that is where my computer is. In the winter, I have a little electric fireplace for my computer space. In the summer the basement is just right.

It seems that it has been sweltering hot weather lately there. Here although it is summer too,but it is not such hot as to turn air conditioning on.Recently the temperature hovers around 25 degrees centigrade.Usually we turn on it at 35 °C and above.

I compared some temperatures with another friend who uses C temperatures. I find that your 25 is similar to our 77, and it is fairly comfortable and pleasant. Your 35 converts to about 93, which is hot, but not too bad, unless it is very humid or you have to be where there is a lot of pavement and few trees and plants. We have been having temperatures like your 35C and above with humidity lately.

I know you use Fahrenheit, our 35 equals your 95.Small wonder you have to turn air-conditioner on,the thermometer has already read 35°C there. We live close to the Yangtze river. It is hot and suffocating during dog days every year.

Well, if you remember, I live in Austin, Texas and you better have air conditioning in Texas. I have been running my air conditioning for the past month and a half although there have been some days when I have not had to use it. But from here on, we will be using air conditioning until sometime in October. We are already in the low to middle 90's in the daytime. Nights are still very pleasant but my apartment remains warm from the daytime heat so I must continue to use air conditioning even during the nighttime. When I go to sleep, I turn the air conditioning to about 80 and turn on a box fan by the side of my bed.

Our temperatures are like yours only more humid. I have the advantage of being in a free standing house with trees all around so it helps a lot. I like a fan year around for my personal preference.

It may be the effect of the heated pavement in the courtyard that keeps you so warm. Like solar reservoirs that accumulate the heat, store it, then release it when the sun goes down.

I live in an apartment complex. All our apartments face a courtyard. I live inside a courtyard. For whatever reason, this causes our apartments to remain warm in the warm months even after the day's heat wears off. For instance, it is cool and comfortable outside with wind but if I turn off my air conditioning, my apartment will become very warm. They are what is known as hot apartments. If you lived in a house or another apartment right now, you would probably be able to turn off your air conditioning and just go with fans. In the winter, we have to use heat only sparingly even in cold weather because of the same reason above. It has something to do with living inside a courtyard.

We also had a very hot week which led to our AC going on as well. We only try to turn it on at night so we can sleep better. We do have a lot of fans. Also something that works really well if gets cooler outside as soon as the sun goes down is turning on the ceiling fan. It is not what you think...it is a fan that opens up slats right from the ceiling. It was installed into our attic. Basically, the purpose is that once you turn it on it sucks up the air in the house(so you open all the windows) and it takes in all the cool air from outside and puts it inside for you! Kind of expensive...but has been worth it for our electric bill.

I do not have an attic ventilation fan, it would help sometimes, but it is not cooling off at night at all by the time we have to go to bed. It is 87 degrees right now and after 8;30 at night.

I really believe that, in spite of my best efforts, I am getting older. I swore that I WOULD GET OLDER, BUT WOULD NEVER GET OLD. I think my body is trying to betray my brain. Allow me to explain that statement. I have been saying for a long time that I will not allow myself to get old. Someone please pinch me, I think I'm in the middle of a very real nightmare, in which I am getting older by the minute and it shows. A week ago I was doing my summer employment and a BIG FLOCK OF BUZZARDS WAS CIRCLING ABOVE ME. I shook my fist at them and informed them that I was absolutely, positively not in any danger of dying so they could just leave and go find a different body to feast on. I don't think I really impressed them much because THEY JUST KEPT ON CIRCLING ABOVE ME. Honestly now, I was very happy to get back to the van and drive off, with the A/C cranked up to the MAX. We all get older but the intelligent folks will know that A/C was MEANT TO BE USED AS NEEDED. Comfort is a GOOD REASON to use it.

I am glad the buzzards decided to save you for another day for a snack. Yes, I think I appreciate the a/c in a car even more than in the house. Of course I am prone to sleep in the car as well, so there is that in common. I like a/c to sleep.

Turning on an a.c. entire day/night would literally burn my pocket to pay the electric bills. I used to take a shower before sleeping and put some cooling lotion or spray on my feet t get a good sleep in summer. When your feet are hot your entire body seem to feel hot.

I try to bring in as much cool air as possible and wait for a while before I use air conditioning. Also, the central units are more economical to run. Some people believe that once you get the house cool you should keep it that way that it saves more money. You have to experiment as to what works in your situation.

If you have central heat it should not be to expensive at a later date to have the central air unit added. When you get heat and then a little humidity it is the pits.

We have had one day when I wanted to turn the A/C on. Only one so far. I live in my room upstairs most of the time and it can get humid and uncomfortable when it is hot outside. The upstairs A/C is in my room and I have a fan. What I do is open up the windows when it cools off and cool off the place. Then I close up the house during the day when it is warm/hot out. This helps alot until mid July and August. This year has been different so we will see.

I have broke down and turned mine on too. It is so hot here that it is hard to breathe. Sure can't sleep at night with it so hot. I went out this morning to take the dogs out and it was like the middle of the day kind of hot. 90s all weekend long. My pool is even warm enough to swim in which is odd...usually it takes it until the middle of next month to be comfortable. I think that we are in for a very hot summer...we barely had a winter here.

I live right in the middle of the United States. We usually have four seasons. In December, January and February we expect very cold temperatures and possibly snow or ice. In March, April and May usually, we still have cool to cold nights and some rain and warm days, often sunny. Usually June, July and August are called summer, with hot temperatures and more dry days. That often extends to September. We begin to pull up our gardens and close up our houses, etc. in October, we expect some freezing weather and lots of harvesting of vegetables. September and October leaves fall and November we have Thanksgiving and we start eating heavy hearty foods. Christmas is in December and we have come clear around the calendar and our seasons in Kansas. The weather has been unusual the last two years, though.

Umh, i understand. there is 4 seasons in my place too but the summer is too hot and the winter is very cold with high humid. There is no snow in here but it is really terrible in winter time too. I love Autumn only but it is very short, just 1 month and a half only... Summer is now in here and i have to face it also...however, it is raining in some days recently...then currently i am enjoying the nice weather...
