Souvenirs

When you travel do you like to buy souvenirs? Do you spend a lot of money on souvenirs and do you buy for just yourself or do you bring back stuff for your friends/family? What types of souvenirs do you buy? Personally I like T-shirts and hoodies/sweatshirts but I'm now finding that I have a closet full of them that I don't wear very often, especially the T-shirts. What I really like to buy is fridge magnets. They're inexpensive, useful and something small that you can collect. Do you collect any certain type of souvenir?

hi suebee! what an interesting question! i love to travel and so does my family! the psychoartist is an avid collector of hats and bags, so i like to collect these as souvenirs for myself as i know i will use them at some point...my son brought me back bags from paris and africa as souvenirs...for other family members i try to think in the same way, for instance, if they are readers bring them books, or pictures or decor for my mother, who was the original psychoartist! i think that in this way you are able to gift people with the things they will enjoy, use, and treasure, and not end up later with a lot of junk with tourist trap names all over them that you have no use or respect for...

That's very true. If you think about what the person enjoys then you can give a meaningful, useful gift that is appreciated.

Hello Suebee I used to know someone who collected refridgerator magnets. She would collect them where ever she traveled, and she would ask friends, family, and colleagues to help with her collection when they traveled. I brought her back a couple of refridgerator magnets. I usually don't buy a souvenier for me. When my children were small, I would make sure and get something for them that I thought that they would like, or if they were with me, let them select whatever caught their fancy (within reason.)

That's why I usually get a fridge magnet. I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of junk asking myself the question why did I buy that. Fridge magnets are small, inexpensive and somewhat useful. I would always pick my kids up a little something as well.

Really? I didn't know that about a stainless steel fridge. Interesting.

There is quite the variety in those magnets, as well. They can be fun, and the children love to play with them. Unfortunately, the magnets wouldn't stick to my stainless steel refridgerator. I have wondered about sticking them all over my car, but I don't know that they would stay on at high speeds.

I do like traveling & fortunately because of my work, I do travel more than I would have on my own... I'm not really a souvenir person, though... I usually take few pictures & that's about it... If I see something I like, I'd get it but not because of the places I go to but just because I liked it... I do that even when I'm not traveling... There was this one time when I went to France & I was on a train, I really wanted a cup of coffee... On the dining cart, they had travel mug in a shape of eiffel tower... I thought that was interesting... But I wouldn't have gotten that if I wasn't in the mood for coffee... I've had this thing for about 8 years & I think I've used it all of 3 times...

Lol... Nothing wrong with collecting something from places... And yeah, that tower coffee mug was really cool... But it was hard to drink out of... I have to pull the top part of the tower up & it opens up a little "drinking hole" on a side... And because how it was shaped, it was a bit awkward to drink... I think it was made more for looks than its functionality... But it's ok... I like it anyway... It was the only time I've been to France & unfortunately I didn't get a chance to to a lot of sight seeing so I get the feeling that I missed out on things...

I have only been to France once, and yes, I visited the eiffel tower. I don't think I got any souvenirs though except for clothes and a candle and, of course, pictures.

What a great souvenir though...an eiffel tower coffee cup! I never used to collect things, just buy whatever I liked, as you do, but now I like to collect magnets.

Koala bear fridge magnet - This magnet had a clip to hold papers.
As you must have by now known reading through my participation here that I am seasoned traveller having covered quite a bit of the world. The excitement will be incomplete if when you return you come empty handed albeit shopping for yourself! I always carry something for my loved ones. Tea shirts from the Bahamas - Had been on a luxury cruise by the Sovereign of the Seas, fridge magnets specially the one with a clip to hold papers, and they were picked from Australia and resembled the Koala bear. Have mercy on me Sue, I would have to write a pastoral about the various things I bought while on holiday. But if you asked me what I bought for myself each time I packed up it was chocolates - chocolates from Switzerland,Australia, Rototerdam, Belgium, Italy, USA, Canada, France, Germany. New Zeaand - have I lift out any one. Does not matter suffice it to say that my main luggage when I get back is chocolates. And all the praise for Switzerland no doubt by other but not by me because I had picked up a kilo of chocolates from Woolworths in Australia where these chocolates which we not even wrapped were just lying in a heap. Yummy, yummy, yummy!

I can't say that I ever bought chocolate as souvenirs, however I have eaten chocolate while on vacation, lol. I'm with you on the fridge magnets. There's just something about them that I really, really like.

I used to collect all kinds of things, but at some point I stopped 'cause I kept buying clutter that I'd never use for anything. I've got lot of dolls with national costumes somewhere, and other decorative stuff. At least I must have thought it decorative at some point :-) I also like the fridge magnets though, 'cause they are small and it's easy to find out where to put them :-) And you can get nice one or really cheesy ones. I've got some really cheesy ones from London.

I've got some really cheesy ones from London. I'm going back there for the Olympics and I'm sure they've got some even worse then :-) A friend of mine both some great but cheesy tea towels with Will and Kate when she studied in Edinburgh. Didn't find the fridge magnet equivalent but maybe they have some for the queens jubileum.

Yes, I have some cheesy fridge magnets as well...aren't they great? lol I agree you can get too much clutter and sometimes wonder what ever possessed you to buy some of the souvenirs you end up with. That's also why I like the fridge magnets. It seems you can never have too many of them.

I used to buy a lots souvenirs before but now i give up that habit since i feel that i just spend much money for it and it was not worth at all. What i do is just take as many pictures as i can. I bring not much money whenever i go out and if i buy, i just buy earnings that are handmade in a place that i visit.

Handmade souvenirs are great! I like things that show the local crafts and talent of places that I visit. Pictures make great memories as well. I always take lots and lots of them.

I like to buy little things that can usually only be found in the place I happen to be traveling. I like getting unusual items. I also used to collect bells, and I'd get a bell with the name of the place where I was. Like I have one that says Australia, one that says Alabama...

I always buy souvenirs when I am on my travels. I loved finding a handy crafts shop in Rio and bought a costume doll. My dear friend that lives in Chile told me about a handy crafts village and I adored it there. Over the years I have collected costume doll from different countries. My fridge door is full of magnets collected on my travels. I have a small collection of model houses and got one in Hungary and another in Poland. One is a Swiss chalet that plays music. They take pride of place on my shelf. My costume doll collection is behind glass just below my travel photo albums. I collect postcards and have three albums of them. I have many coins and bank notes from my travels. In Cape Town I couldn't resist bringing back tumbled crystals. In Tallinn capital of Estonia the prices of postcards and fridge magnets shocked me.

Little houses...never thought of collecting them. I bet they're great. I also like getting some local crafts. My fridge is becoming crowded with magnets now as well. You're right, some things you just can't resist buying while on vacation.

Hmmm. It depends. If I have money, oh yeah, I would buy souvenir for my loved ones, family and friends, but if I do not have money, I would not buy any souvenir. It is better to save money for the future

Yes I love to buy souvenirs but I dont spend lots of money on souvenirs. I do have some collection of native dolls and different kinds of snowball figurines when I travel abroad and key chains when travel here inside my country. But sometimes I buy some T-shirts, ballpens and cosmetics for my family and relatives when I have extra budget.

Oh I forgot about Christmas decorations! When you said snowballs it reminded me. Sometimes, if they are available I pick up Christmas Tree ornaments as souvenirs. I love them but a lot of places don't have them, especially if you travel in the summer, they're harder to find.

It is inevitable to bring a token from a certain place. I used to buy keychains or anything that will remind of the place, like traveling into a certain provinces or countries.

Keychains are popular souvenir items and are small enough that you can have a collection of them. Plus they are inexpensive so you don't spend a fortune on souvenirs.

I don’t normally go on generic souvenir which is found on some common souvenir shops, not that I don’t like it. It’s just that it’s very common and almost every shops in tour stores have it. So when I am travelling, I go over unique and hard to find items, such as antiques or most especially jewelries because they are more out shine common souvenir items, and the best is that I can use it every day. And in some occasions which means that I’ve put my money in good use.

Good idea. Sometimes I buy jewelry as a souvenir as well, especially if it is unique, and, as you say, you can get some use out of it.

you could always make pillows out of old t shirts and hoodies but we really don't travel a whole lot but when i was a teen, we traveled quite a bit and at that time, i was buying sterling silver charms for my bracelet but now, i would probably just buy postcards, but old ones at the local antique store.

Charms is another thing people collect...I forgot about them! I used to collect the little spoons as well to display in my spoon rack, but got away from that too.

I always collect shot glasses when I travel now. I used to keep key chains from everywhere I went, but now that I'm 21 a shot glass is a little more useful :-) A great cheap souvenir idea though is the room key to your hotel room! I have a shoebox full of them from everywhere I've been.

I like buying fridge magnets too. They're cheap and you can show them off, unlike the shirts. So that's what I usually buy when I travel. For family and friends, it's either fridge magnets or key chains. Most souvenirs are expensive, so those are the only ones I can afford. That, or food.

I collect pop and rock music from the world. Before I travel I try to find some information about the local singers and bands in the country that I am going to visit so that I know which names to look for in the music shops. Sometimes I am able to listen to some of their music on YouTube before I travel. Last time I travelled I also bought a couple of other things for myself like a mug, a t-shirt and a calendar. I always buy souvenirs for my friends and my relatives. One of my friends collects keychains so I always try to find some of the local keychains for him when I visit another country. I also buy presents for a couple of other friends, but they don't collect anything, so I buy different kinds of souvenirs for them.

About the only people I buy souvenirs for are my two grown sons, and it's usually a magnet. My husband loves to buy T-shirts. What a great idea, getting the music! The only time I got music from a trip was when I went to Memphis, Tennessee. We visited Sun Studio and I got their "Million Dollar Quartet" CD, an informal jam session with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. Love it!

Hi! Yes, keychains and magnets seem to be popular items to collect. My favourite is the magnets. Like you, I always pick up a couple of extras, just in case I forgot someone when buying souvenirs. Match books sound like a good idea as well.
