'wahoo' fish? There is a new taco place(Baja Fresh)in town and I am wondering if their fish is any good. I have never heard of it before. Is it oily, flavorful, white and dry or what? I love fish tacos but would like to know if the fish is any good before I go there. Any one ever eaten there before or know about 'wahoo'?

I've never had wahoo but I think it's more like whiting (which is what most fast food places use). It's a firm, meaty fish (like swordtail) and not oily (like tilapia). My big concern is where they are getting the wish and if it's being caught sustainably.

Good point. Wahoo is becoming increasingly popular. It's a deep ocean game fish so I certainly hope that Wahoo doesn't become overfished as many other fish species are.

Ya, shrimp is getting to where it is iffy at best. You just don't know where it comes from.

You know, not only have I never heard of Wahoo Fish, but I've never even tried a fish taco! It just sounds weird to me! But I see I'll have to try one..

Oh, yes they are delicious. I usually get a fish taco from the fish and chicken place close to our theater. It is a white fish on a corn tortilla with alittle thousand island dressing and some chopped cabbage. Delicious!

I've had Wahoo at a sushi restaurant and love it. It's a white fish with a firm texture and is not too oily. Although I've never had it cooked as In a taco, I can imagine it would probably taste similar to halibut.

Good morning, celticeagle! Years ago, when I used to spend several months a year (caretaking a Condo Complex) in Oahu..."Wahoo fish" there is known as "Ono" and has always been a staple of their diet! So, of course it became ours too...and a favourite. We found it superior to many other white fish including tilapia..the flesh being white and very clean tasting, so I imagine it would be lovely in tacos, but our preference was just brushed with oil and grilled! I think to answer the question..is it sustainable, that's NOT possible, as human's are so unpredictable! BUT, it is one of the fastest growing fish..and in tropical waters easily reaches 8feet..180 pounds rapidly..and can still swim at 50 mph! We did go out with a local fishing guide..and amazed at the speed and agility ..as it almost (in life) looks like a barracuda! Try it and enjoy!

How interesting. I had recently read that it was a staple and was known as "ono" but not all the rest. Thanks for the interesting information and I think we well have to check it out.
