I live in a neighborhood where I can see many cats walking about from houses to houses. Some of them enter my yard by jumping over the fence. They even go up to the roof of my house. In the back yard there is a big hole from which rats come in and out. As far as I know every time a cat comes acroos a rat, the cat usually catches the rat. The cats in my yard never try to prey the rats. The rats loiter about happily and the cats do nothing. What do you think my dear mylotter who have cat pets?

Oh is that so my friend. I thought rats are afraid of cats because they will be eaten by it.

That is what I thought as well. In fact rats still roam about while there are cats around them.

I don't feed the cats. They probably have foods from the nearby houses. I dont feed them because they poo at will. What do you think about it?

Hey Yanzalong, Most of the cats just used to attack the rats or creatures beside them but this is really a rare case . May be the cat have enough food to eat this may be the reason why they don’t catch the rats. The thing you have to do is, don’t feed those cats so that they feel hungry and this will make them to eat the rats to get away from the hungry [ em]happy[/em].

i think in reality it is not true that cats go after rats or a mouse because i have never seen a cat chase them in person. we used to have pet cats at home and a lot of rats but they never catch them..ever since i have never seen it..maybe it is just on cartoons that the cats chase rats or mouse.

our dogs would chase and kill a rat when they see one...there are big rats roaming around and whenever our dogs sees it they try their best to get the rats..

I see. But I saw a cat eating the flesh of a rat. It was still bleeding. Or may be different countries have different cats with different behavior.

I think it is just up to the cats, i have never seen a cat eat a rat or attack it though.. Maybe it just wants to play with it, and playing for them is a bit brutal.. They'd prefer fish..

My cat is entirely different from this. He is doing his duties quite well. He just used to catch all the rats and other small creatures very easily. After catching the pray he just kills them and later he just used to play with it. My cat doesn’t like to eat the rat’s flesh. I don’t know why he does not eat it but he eats the flesh of birds, squirrels and other creatures

That is great cat you have. Do you train it? As i know cats poo at will. It is one of the reasons I don't allow cats to stay with me.

Cats all have their own individual personality. Some of them are more inclined to hunt than others. A big rat can injure a cat so if there is an easier meal around they will play it safe. Sounds like your cats don't have very strong hunting instincts and are getting plenty of food somewhere else. Even if you don't see them do it they are still controlling the rat population some. They will pick off the little ones, the sick and the injured. I grew up with a couple of cats that were awesome hunters and we never had any rats. One of them was nothing less than incredible. I saw her see, attack and kill a mouse in the blink of an eye. I also saw her make an unbelievable leap and catch a low flying bird. Last of all I saw her beat up the local German shepherd when he thought to have some fun cornering her. He never tried that again.

You must have trained her. She was a lovely cat, I imagine that. Does she have children? How long have you had her?

I think human discard too much food, so that cats become lazy, they can alive without doing anyting. Mice no longer is food but become toy. DNA of a population takes a very long time before they change. hum, so they just too full and did not changed, but they will...

Yes you are right. In my neighborhood people put the rubbish tins in front of their houses. The cats usually search foods in the rubbish tins leaving the front of the houses messy because the rubbish got scattered.

Those rats must have a secret pact with cats. I just wonder how they could compromise cats to such an extent. Maybe they share food with cats? :))

Human beings have changed, so have cats. Inorganic foods we eat are also eaten by cats. So cats become addicted on inorganic food, which is why they are not interested in rats anymore.

I used to see cats catch a rat. Even I saw a cat running after a rat. I have noticed that rats are now much bigger. It is probably due to the rats being so big that cats don't have guts to prey rats.

i had a dog once that killed rats and he was very efficient at it like 1 average a week, big or small he once caught one almost as big as an adult cat (cats in my country are not that big) and i think times have changed before our cats catches mouse as food or toys but now i think rats scare the hell out of cats even the street cats i never see one trying to catch rats.

You are right bro. I've never seen cats catch rats that live in the gutters. It is probably the size of the rats that makes cats not dare to get close.

I thought all cats had an instinct to hunt. My cat chases goffers down their holes in the yard but she's just a kitten still 10 months. She also climbs the tree n gets on the roof chasing Idk what.

Probably the cats in my yard know I never feed them. So they don't want to help me get rid of the rats.
