New Class Anxieties

So, I’m sure everyone gets anxieties whenever they are about to start new classes (whether they’re in high school or college), that’s very understandable. I get this anxieties too, but sometimes I think mine might go a step further than other’s. Whenever it’s about a week or 2 away from me starting a new semester in college (which equals new classes and new people) I start having dreams about school. This has happened to me since high school, EVERY time I am about to start new classes. And they are never good dreams, most of the time the dream is either about me not being able to find my classrooms (so I’m running horribly late) or they are about me not doing homework for the class that I’m sitting in. But sometimes my dreams are much more unlikely to happen (but they still don’t make starting a new class easier! Haha). Just recently I had a dream that my class was taking a small trip to some old building, and this guy from my class and I stopped to pet this dog that was in the building. Pretty soon I was petting the dog by myself and this woman walked up. And she told me that the dog I was petting actually died! Oh my gosh, I do not like ghosts so I was very upset! She told me that the dog was 150 years old, and that they’ve had it for 30 years. I was less then thrilled about petting a ghost dog. Then everyone in my class were driving (in their own cars) to get somewhere, and up ahead there were just a bunch of abandoned cars blocking the street ahead (it was night time). We all got out of our cars and just started walking to wherever we were going. Pretty soon I started to feel like something was falling us in the shadows at the side of the road, and I was trying to catch up to a friend but I was alone at the moment. Thankfully I woke up before anything creepy came out of the shadows and grabbed me, but it was still a creepy feeling! What about you guys? Does anyone else have weird anxiety dreams when it comes to starting school?

Well the can't find the classroom dreams I have in the middle of the year! lol Actually, my Mom (who graduated from getting her masters degree like 30 years ago!) tells me that she still has dreams where she's trying to find her classroom. I also have dreams that I forgot some vital piece of homework or to study for some daunting test. I don't think I've ever had a really scary dream like the ones you describe, but I have had those anxiety dreams! I was actually recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. So my own extreme anxieties about school make a whole lot more sense. It's not just dreams, I would be on the verge of being physically ill on first days of terms. I'm going back to new college come August, and I'm very nervous of course... but now I've been in DBT therapy and I have Xanax to help me too.

I don't think many people have the weird scary dreams that I have! Haha. But I'm not surprised other people have dreams about missing classrooms and forgotten homework. Aww, I'm sorry about your diagnosis, it's gotta be tough! But I'm glad you aren't letting it hold you back, good luck with your new classe!

I often worry that I've forgotten something, whether or not I have dreams about it or not!!! Haha! Well then I'm glad you were able to figure out why you were having difficulty! And I'm glad you can move on from it and push forward! Thank you

The worst part about having a dream that you forgot some homework is that sometimes I wake up really confused and am convinced that I actually forgot something for a good half hour or so. lol Well, getting the diagnosis was a good thing because now I know what I'm dealing with and I can get help and get it treated. Before I knew, I fell into a depression thinking that I was dumb and stupid and incapable because there were so many things that caused me problems and I was so afraid of new people that it held me back from so many things. I've been on a recovery path for about six months now. I dropped out of my old school and changed my major. I've got a very long way to go, and I'm very nervous about the new school and new major, but I'm also excited because now I'm thinking that I'm really on the path I should be on. So thanks for the luck, and good luck to you facing school whenever you face it!

No, sometimes I actually look forward to the beginning of the school term, as I get to meet my friends again! I seldom dream.. usually just lay in bed, and I zonked out for the next 8 hours.

Oh don't get me wrong! I love school! I look forward to new classes too. But I am generally a shy person, so having to deal with new people usually brings on some anxieties for me. But when I've been in the class for a while I usually get comfortable with the people (especially the people I sit around day after day). I think my anxieties def. stem from the new people more than the new class. Of course, I'm always a little worried about my teachers too. No one likes to walk into a classroom for the first time with a bad teacher! Haha. But most of my teachers in college have been good.

These types of dreams are pretty common before big important events such as starting a new class. I have had them before whenever I have started a new job. I always dream that I turn up late with no tools or turn up in the wrong place to start work only to find out that I do not actually work there. Weird dreams like that always happen when I am travelling early the next morning too. I dream I am late and about to miss my flight or whatever. They are always weird and usually about running late and being lost.

Ooo I remember one dream where I was running late for a flight...worst feeling EVER! Haha. And I've had dreams where I went to the wrong class and got weird looks from the teacher. Oh, odd enough last night I had a dream that I was working at my previous job, was my first night of my new employment period, and I showed up (unknowingly) 2 hours EARLY when I thought I had been running late...and I was mad that no one told me I was that early! Haha. Oh our minds are unique and weird creatures aren't they...

YES! I usually want a friend who is in the same class as me. If I do not have a friend in the same class then I start to have these anxieties. But these anxieties will pretty soon die down once I get past several days of school. By then, I would have met my new classmates and mingled with them. Happy mylotting.
