I am reading a book about true crime stories at the moment. One of the stories describes a girl who disappeared without a trace more than 30 years ago. She disappeared on a ferry between Denmark and Germany. Many people think that she drowned, but her body has never been found and not a single person on the ferry heard or saw anything. If she drowned, there are 3 possibilities: She jumped (committed suicide), it was an accident or someone pushed her (killed her) It is also possible that she has been abducted and killed after she left the ferry. Because her body hasn't been found and no one heard anything some people think that she didn't drown. They think that she has changed her appearance and started a new life somewhere else. Do you ever read true crime stories? Have you read or heard about people who disappeared without a trace? What happened?

55000 persons are "disappearing" in France every year and only a very small part is due to crime : 50000 are kids running away and among them 45000 are found quickly. For the 5000 adults, most of them are people wanting to start a new life. If they have not abandoned their wife and children, they have the right to ask the police to not tell to their friends and family where they are. The most probable here is that this girl decided to live a new life. I can hardly imagine that the corpse would have not been found if she drowned. I have several books about true crime stories, most of them from the 19th century, a period where people were liking these sort of books.

I have no idea what the water is like between Germany and Denmark, so I cannot speak of this particular instance. What I can tell you, though, is that it is not uncommon for bodies to disappear in the ocean and never be recovered. This also happens in some rivers and lakes. I was just watching a show last night where a boat sank and eight people drown in the lake but only five of the bodies were recovered. The divers searched for the other bodies but were unable to find them. The lake is large and very deep and murky plus there are large catfish and bull sharks present in the lake, so they believe that the fish disposed of the other bodies.

There are more jellyfishes than piranhas in the Baltic Sea. I think it is rare when a corpse is not found there, but Porcospino has perhaps more information ?

I do not know how common it is when a corpse is not found there, but then again there are exceptions to the rule in most instances. I did a quick search to see what fish species are common there, though, and there are some species that have been known to attack humans from time to time, although not specifically in the Baltic Sea, which might be a factor in this case. Still, there are some that tend to be "opportunistic feeders", so they will not differentiate between a human corpse and another kind of easily available meal.

I have heard of too many people disappearing without a trace, and their disappearance is still a mystery. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence here in the US, and many of these disappearances are thought to be from "foul play" rather than people trying to start over in a new life, especially when their personal items are found but they are not. I can understand leaving a driver's license and certain other identifying items behind if you are trying to start over with a new identity, but leaving behind cash and other easily transportable things does not make sense, especially since even a robber would take these items.

There have also been some cases in my country where the police thought that the things that people left behind were strange and it didn't really make sense to leave those things behind if the person intented to start a new life somewhere else. That was one of the reasons why the police thought that the disappearance was a crime and not someone who decided to start a new life somewhere else. Of course some of the people from my country who disappear simply wanted to get from everything, but if there is any doubt the police treat it like a crime.

I don't think that they found any blood at all. It is true that it would be difficult to guess what happened even if there was some blood. It could have been accident where she cut herself or it could have been someone who attacked her. I find it strange that none of the other passengers heard or saw anything. If she was attracked she would probably have screamed and there would have been other kinds of noise. I find it hard to believe that no one heard that if it actually happened that way, but I guess that we will never discover the truth.

It is the same way in this country. There have been disappearances where someone claimed that the person just took off ... I guess you could call it "running away", although I usually think of that more in terms of children rather than adults ... but the things that the person left behind suggested that they did not leave voluntarily. In most of these cases, the person that claims the other one just took off ends up being the suspect, especially when evidence is found that there was a struggle or something like that. In the case that you are reading about, though, it would be very difficult to find evidence of a struggle, especially on a ferry, unless they found blood and could positively match it to the girl that disappeared. Even then, depending upon the amount and location of the blood, it would be difficult to say that she didn't just trip and fall or cut herself rather than get into an altercation with or get attacked by someone.

I love reading these types of stories! This sounds like a great mystery. How old was the girl? And did she have a significant other? If so, what happened to that person? he or she might know what happened, if they were very close. Also, what happened to the parents--why wasn't the girl traveling with them? All of this background might help explain what happened to her. . .

I don't think it is possible that she changed her identity and moved somewhere else with her boyfriend. That would have been possible if they had both been "ordinary" people, but her boyfriend was a famous soccer player and he stayed in the same location and continued his career after her disappearance. The other option that you mentioned (that she was hiding from him because of an abusive relationship) that would be possible. I hadn't thought about that, but it is not unrealistic. I don't know why she was travelling with some relatives instead of her parents. It could also be interesting to know what the purpose of the trip was, maybe that is related to her disappearance? But I don't know that either.

hhmmm. . .the plot thickens! Maybe the author (or you) should write a follow-up sequel. . .

I was thinking that if the boyfriend had also moved or changed location, even months after the fact, that would show that she was probably still alive and living under an assumed identity (with him). Unless, of course, people indicated that he had been overbearing, abusive, etc., in which case it could mean that she was hiding from him. As for the relatives, you did actually mention that in your original post; I was questioning why she was traveling with relatives and not her own parents?

I too love to read crime and detective novels and stories, but have not read the story you have mentioned here yet.Such things happen in the world of crimes.Minutes ago I was watching the news on tv.A girl child has got stolen from the CST railway station in Mumbai. The theft was caught live on cc cameras installed at the station. The girl was sleeping and so were her parents. The thief came, lifted the child and left.People saw him taking the sleeping child, but mistook the child to be his own.He was limping. The police has been put on alert, but the thief is now at large.

Did she disappeared on the ferry, or after she left the ferry? If she was noticed missing during the voyage then it could be that she didn't board the ferry after all? If not so, then it'll be so weird beyond imagination that she could've just gone missing on board. What was her name?

Her name is Kris Egeberg. She disappeared on the ferry. I forgot to mention that, but she was travelling with some relatives. At one point she told her relatives that she was going to spend some time on the sun deck, then she left and she never came back. It is possible that she drowned, but it is very strange that no one heard anything and her body wasn't found. More than 30 years has passed since that time and we might never find out what happened to her.

Well, I'll go for the drowning. Sure it was weird that her body wasn't found, but who knows where her body might be in the sea. Anything could happen as to why the body wasn't found. I don't mean to sound offensive, but maybe the body was eaten off by sharks? Have you heard of Jaycee Lee Duggard? She was kidnapped when she was very young and her abductor kept and fathered her children for many many years.

Yeah that is a big possibility, sharks might have eaten her body leaving no trace. Especially if it is a wide dark sea, it is not unusual to have drowned bodies missing..

Well, maybe she managed to changed her looks while inside the ferry and no one noticed her alighted the moment they reached their destination. And then changed all her identities till then nothing is heard about her whereabouts.

I think it is possibility that she changed her looks and managed to get away from the ferry unnoticed. If she did that she must have planned it very carefully because she wasn't travelling alone. She told her relatives that she would spend some time on the sun deck of the ferry, but they never saw her again. It must have been a difficult situation for her relatives, because 30 years has passed and they still don't know what happened or why she decided to disappear if was her own choice to disappear.

I read a book about a girl who went missing when she was a child and then she found herself in a milk carton when she was a teenager. I would guess you are familiar with this book, The Face in the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney.. It is actually a light read compared to real stories because this one is a work of fiction. But still, it is not far from the impossible. There are sequels, Whatever Happened to Janie and The Voice on the Radio. I think there is one more after but I haven't read it yet..

Is that one of the works of Anne Rule? I've read some of her works. One of her story has a man that killed her wife and change his appearance for about three times and pretend to be a police officer. If you want to read that it's from Kiss me, Kill me (Anne Rule Vol. 9 I think.)

No, the book that I mentioned is written by a Danish author. My local library has several books about true crime stories and most of them are written by different policemen. I like to read those true stories. Sometimes they have found the person who commited the crime and in some cases like the one that I mentioned when I started the discussion there the truth has never been revealed. I don't know the books by Anne Rule, but I looked up her name when I had read your response. Her books sounds interesting and I will see if I can find them at my local library.
