As of why numerals look the way they do, the answer slips my understanding ;-) I guess it's just a way evolution works... But, if you're wondering who actually invented "arabic" numerals, here's what I found out by doing a search on the internet: www.mediahistory.umn.edu/archive/numerals.html I didn't know the whole story behind arabic numerals either.

Yes the numerals are obviously 'Arabic' but there was very good algorithm behind it. I can give you the hint right but I will post the presentation as soon as possible. So, the concept behind it was 'ANGLE'. Yes, 'ANGLE'! The very first numerals contained as many angles as their values, I mean to say the very first numeral '1' contains only one angle if we write it in it's original form. And similarly for '2' '3' '4' '5' '6' '7' '8' '9' etc. Demonstrating the concept here is beyond my scope but yes I will upload the file as soon as possible.

Wow. Why you think like that. Yeah when you hear or see that numbers you know for what they a talking. But don't you think the the number names are different in different countries. If I tell you "edno" what number you think is that. This is just because you know pretty well that word and it shape. PS: By the way "edno" in my language is one

I am not too sure about this; but I'd think number '1' was probably derived from Arabic language whose first letter 'Alif' and numeral 'one' have similar shape as '1'
