Hi there! She must mean Polycystic ovaries. I have it too... And ive had it for sooooo many years. It is actually very common. The doctors would recomment progesterone pills and metformin but honestly, it wont get cured that way. The medications however do help program the brain that hey it is time to ovulate; time to normalize or balance the hormones. Weight loss is the sure thing to get rid of PCOS. I have however seen in youtube that there are many who have lost weight but still have PCOS though...

Hi Surek! Yes, progesterone and metformin pills are usually advised to patients with PCOS. Your niece is hormonally imbalanced thats why she was recommended to take those pills. What actually happens with PCOS is that the egg cells fail to mature. There are egg cells released by the ovary but they couldnt mature due to lack of inherent progesterone hormone in the body. As for metfomin, the reason why she is recommended with such is that patients with PCOS are in the pre-diabetic stage. This will help her metabolize faster.

I don't know if poly cyst overy is dangerous than normal fybroid and cysts, I have it and its very painful when period comes, I suggest you better seek doctor's advice whether to do operation or not, if its better than do it, later than suffer in pain. Your niece must be very painful every month now, so do it as soon as possible.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders. PCOS is a complex, heterogeneous disorder of uncertain etiology, but there is strong evidence that it can to a large degree be classified as a genetic disease. PCOS produces symptoms in approximately 5% to 10% of women of reproductive age (12–45 years old). It is thought to be one of the leading causes of female subfertility and the most frequent endocrine problem in women of reproductive age. The principal features are anovulation, resulting in irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, ovulation-related infertility, and polycystic ovaries; excessive amounts or effects of androgenic (masculinizing) hormones, resulting in acne and hirsutism; and insulin resistance, often associated with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly among affected women. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycystic_ovary_syndrome

My sister-in-law suffers from poly cystic ovarian syndrome and it is something that does cause her quite a bit of pain. It is true that there is no complete cure for this disease, with the exception of having a complete hysterectomy, but that wouldn't be something that a young person would want to have done because it would mean that they would never be able to be a mother. That said, there are some things that can be done that will take away the symptoms for a while, but they will eventually come back.

For what I have read about it, this is a genetic disease, and, yes, not curable yet, but, I do think that it is advisable, always to find a second opinion, specially in cases like this, of your poor niece, I think that it is wise to take her to other doctors, read as much as you can about her illness, to form a stronger opinion, to take the best decisions for her. My best wishes and prayers, for her, and all your family.

It is recommended that you may visit a medical college where there are advance medical treatments are available. People here in myLot are not doctors and our remedical measures may not help and the nature of the illness may varie from person to person and the impact also. Sometime the doctor must have said as it is in the advanced stage and it may required to be operated or the boils or systs mutbe broken and that may be the reason for unsufferable pain. You should go to a well equipped hospital where MDs and qualified doctors are providing their services. Some local hospitals/nursing homes or clinics won't be helpfrul and it is better to take her immediately as the pain is so terrible, which we cannot understand.
