How would you pass the time if you had to be in one spot,

You were to interact with people if they came up, but you could not leave, could not read a book, do a puzzle, use your phone, listen to music, or get online. Of course since you are supposed to interact with people you did that when there were any. I make extra money by doing sampling events in stores. It is so hot people are not shopping much in the middle of the day, so there I was, stuck at my little table. I made three weeks worth of menus, read the sales circular and started to list the few things I do not have for my meals. I like to feel organized in that way. Of course it would be nice if I could be online, I would be visiting all my MyLot friends.

I would be busy swatting flies!. May be you could just stroll around within your area of work GG taking care not to miss out on your customers?

You are right, I did walk around and look at some of the ready made, packaged dips and things like guacamole. It is easier to walk in an area than to stand still. If I were to be near shelves that needed straightened, I would even do that. I think that is why I noticed the flies, not enough people to keep me busy. I just have to get faster and more determined with my newspaper.

Knowing you here a bit, I am wondering if this is the right job for you GG. Are you not cut up for better things - something more intellectual? Just a thought.

ok, in all seriousness, which I'm not that good at, if I had paper and pencil, I'd start thinking up things I could write about on MyLot and just make a list with a few descriptive words to remind me about the subject of my future discussions. OR write a discussion that you can post to MyLot later. OR make paper airplanes!!! Of course they would probably fire me for making myself busy but then again, they would fire me for sleeping on the job from boredom too.

I did plan some MyLot discussions. This was one of them. The one about the fly is one of them as well. I do not think I could get away with the airplanes. When there are people coming around it is a lot of fun. I get paid a decent hourly amount to talk to people, be friendly and offer them free stuff. Summer months often are slow, though.

It is funny but you were saying you did make a list, about the same time I suggested it. Just says great minds think alike.......hahaha. I worked for an attorney years ago where I sat as a receptionist for 4 hours a day in a room, by myself most of the time, and the only thing he wanted me to do was balance his checkbook. Anything else he decided was not appropriate when all the other attorneys allowed their receptions to do whatever kept them awake but wasn't too inappropriate for the office. Some of them knitted, others played games, but it was before computers were placed in the receptionist area. So... since I had a typewriter I wrote things like short stories, poems, etc. Hope you find something that works during those boring times.

I do get paid for being there, so that is a good thing. I also decided to write ideas down for discussions. This was one of them, so it helped. I love it when people come by and visit. If it is really slow I can spend a lot of time talking to them.

Wow, that would drive me crazy, especially not able to listen to music..LOL...I guess if I had your job and there was a break in customers, I would write or take notes..In fact, that job would be perfect for me to get ideas on how people act and look for my characters...I wonder if a store near me needs this kind of help??? Then again, in a small town, though I wound NEVER write about a person 100%, but it would keep people guessing: The way that character says, behaves, dresses, could it be________??? :P

Yeah, there is the piped in store music. I bet you would see some interesting people. I do not get to do this often in my town, when I do, even if they do not want samples people come up and visit with me. One store in this particular town seems like everyone has a tattoo---not little ones either. I have seen really pretty and fascinating clothes as well as new hair dos. You would enjoy the pay as well, and knowing about new products. My problem with that is that they are usually things I would not personally buy.

Yes, store music where only once in a while do they play something I like..lol But first, I must get this story I wrote revised before school starts at the end of August. So as much as I need the money, I need to do this first or loss the momentum I have built up..

Wow, you are creative. I guess I would try to write a poem or a short story.... mind you, I am not a poet nor a writer. All of them would end of in the waste bin, still it's a good way to pass the time when I could not be online or listening to music or reading or watching movies...

That is why I made menus and shopping lists, etc. I am going with my husband this week for a car show to sell some product we distribute. We will be home in the evenings. I feel so much better knowing what meals I will be able to fix in the evening. My son lives with us and I like to serve something tasty after work. I have purchased everything I need as well.

I like the time because I have to concentrate, so it is good to make the lists, like you said. That is what the menus were all about as well. It is awful to have a lot of food but not know what to cook. I made it much easier this way.

It is interesting as I have worked in different parts of this town. Sometimes I see the chef from the country club come in, I know because he is wearing his uniform. Some parts of town have people who dress really high end, if you know what I mean. This store often has older customers and they are really glad just to talk to a friendly person. I can imagine you taking advantage of time to write things as well.

If you still have some friends that are not online, then probably you could write letters? I would take a sketch book and make some drawings.

The clipboard I have would allow for a sketch book and even some drawing pencils or color pencils. I might try some creative writing next time, or there would be room for stationary as well. Writing and drawing and daydreaming activities fit well in this circumstance.

At least you still made your time worthwhile doing all those other stuff you just did. But, if that was me, I would have slept if I could, but that's just wishful thinking. I'd probably, just observe other people around me and be thinking a lot of stuff I'd like to do if I could just get out of there.

I think about the money I am earning. I have not learned to sleep on my feet. It is cool to see different hair, jewelry, tattoos, and clothing. I did enjoy visiting with people when they did come by.

It is really an exacting piece of work.I don't know what the sampling events are like.It seems that the more the people that come up ,the better. You might as well think of threads of mylot in the middle of the day so as to relieve a dull time with it.

You are correct, the more people that come and try my products the more likely they are to buy some so I prefer to have lots of customers. If I can catch their eye I can offer something, or if they are close enough for me to speak and invite them. It also makes the day go by faster to share thoughts with others. I was glad to have some paper on hand to write things on as I thought of them. It seems we were a little busy early, then in the late afternoon when people were getting off of work.

Well, it really depends on what situation and environment I am at that moment. Normally if that spot which I have to stay at does not have anything around me, then I would spend my time thinking about things I experienced, interesting people I met and other memorable moments. If I am at a desk with a computer around, then I may be gaming or mylotting. As long as I am not affecting what I was suppose to do.

You must have been listening in. I have not gone so far as to dance, but I sing along with any background songs I know. I also listen to the deli workers have conversations, they seem to get along well. I will stand behind my table and do low leg lifts to the back and side and go up and down on my toes. Not quite dancing, but movement at least.

The problem with occupying yourself with a private activity (by which I mean one that can only be done individually like playing with one's phone or listening to headphones) in a public place is that someone could come along at any time. Sadly, if I was supposed to be wroking, I'd have to just tough it out. Maybe do a crossword or something, but it wouldn't be right for me to just tune out.

No, not allowed to be on the phone or use headphones. I could probably sneak in a crossword if I had realized it would be so slow. I was fortunate to have some extra paper that was blank on the back. It works well for writing things on. I also got to check the sales thoroughly for good deals. I wish I had had my coupons. The company can send someone to "audit" me at any time, so if anyone is within speaking distance I have to try to engage them in conversation.

I would play mind games. How many 'and''s in the circular? How many people wearing shorts? On and on. If you had a cell phone you could play around with it. I would go nuts. Probably be begging people to try the stuff. Mind games. See if you can have mind control over the customers and get them to come over to your table. I don't know how you do it. I would go nutsy.

I do not do it often, and it is usually not so slow. I had not thought of the different things to hunt for in the circular. Good thing to keep in mind.

Normally I would prefer to read or use the internet, but since that wasn't possible, I would daydream, think about the letters that I wanted to write to my friends and make lists in my head. I would also think about the short stories that I wanted to write. I would be a little difficult to do that without writing anything down, but I might get a couple of ideas that I could use later on. I might also think about the past and some of my favourite memories from the past or make plans and goals for the future.

Often there are extra pages in my paperwork and I can use the backs of them. I can write things down as I have a clipboard with a closing compartment. You might get a whole story written that way. It is fun to reminisce about things while you are whiling away the time.
