Another reason to boycott the London Olympics

To me the Olympic Games should be all about promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle and encouraging young people to take part in actively looking after their health. As the world's largest sporting event I think that they have a responsibility when it comes to influencing not only athletes of today but all future sportsmen and women too. I think that we can all agree on that. So why on earth are they allowing McDonalds, the worlds largest junk food restaurant chain and one of the leading perpetrators in the world when it comes to poisoning people with toxic chemicals to be one of their main sponsors? Is this sending the wrong message to people around the world? That junk food is good for you and can help you achieve great things athletically? Shouldn't the games committee try and source healthy sponsors? Perhaps they do not care about the health of the people and have truly sold out just like many other sports have. The other main chemical nasty Coke is also a major sponsor. I reckon that athletes would fail the drug testing if they drank too much of that stuff. Can you imagine trying to run the marathon or pole vault your way to gold living on a diet of McDonalds and Coke? http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mcdonald-2012-olympic-sponsor-sends-wrong-message-angers-143700129--oly.html

I agree with you.Grant that Olympic games is too commercialized these days, but they shouldn't go so far as to do such sort of things that deny world opinion. It is well known that Olympic games is the focus of world attention,What kind of information it will deliver for them to do so.Is it true that money talks?

Too right, Bill! It's sending the wrong messages - blind Freddy could see it! I reckon Raw Pleasure should sponsor the Olympic Games! Think of the killing you'd make with all that "free" publicity & the resulting sales. There'd be no vacant VIP seats there then & every spectator would be a participant. Things are looking "up" down here for the cause... price of chook has just doubled & The Body Shop (not a favourite with vegans, but, well, hey... if their money's good & they wanna somehow "make amends", then it's a start!) has teamed up with WSPA for another massive protest to Ban Live Exports this Saturday in Rundle Mall. Adelaide Vegans has just doubled their venue list every month & Yours Truly has offered free transport to & from any of these events - especially Bliss. Roo meat to Russia got banned recently & the whole bl00dy works got shut down & roo shooters are now all looking for an honest job. America told us we needed Marine Parks right around the Country & now we've gone & done it & the commercial fishing industry is folding. Tassie just turned away that massive Fedral Trawler with one protest. Activism's a-working & I'm swinging it from the top of a native pine in the Bitter winds of August!

Mate! Good to see you here again. I have not seen you in these parts for some time now...perhaps we just keep passing each other on separate paths? Good to see that the "cause" is going well down there. We might yet have a planet left for future generations to live on if all that keeps up! Yeah, cannot really see us sponsoring the games, might blow out the budget slightly that one! Under 9's beach volleyball perhaps, but not the Olympics!

Yeah you are right, we don't make that much any more. That is why so many people are leaving here and going to work in the mines. There are not many manufacturing or construction jobs left locally at all. I would like to see them becoming more self sufficient and growing their own food instead of working long hours for big bucks though. Or making their own electricity of course! No, I did not hear that about Melbourne. It is happening, slowly though at the moment. I think it needs to escalate a bit more though if we are all to avoid ending up in the poo.

Nope! We're on the same path... just different ways of tackling it. One day I'll get around to responding to all your other discussions, but I'm building Crystal Batteries at the moment; the ones with real power, never need recharging, output 24/7, don't need sunshine... you know the deal. Just got the rods shipped in from QLD & the copper mesh from China. I rang around locally for this stuff for months & months, which only confirms what we're hearing & seeing in the media: that this country don't make nothing no more! Did you hear about it? The Greens won the Primary in the strongest Labor Seat (Melbourne) in the country for over a century. Couldn't believe it! The times, they are a-changing! Newspapers are all going digital... the list goes on! Watch out for me on the news! Bill, you've been to the USA enough times to get familiar with the "if you don't ask; you don't get" principle of funding in the business world. I reckon if you had the time & the "could-be-botheredness", you could apply it!

You go where the money is, that is the bottom line. I do not watch TV much anyway so I did not realize they were such a presence. No one is going to fork over dollars to promote fresh produce and lean meat, even if it were the preferred meal of champions. It is sad, and I am not criticizing your dismay. They removed all vended soda from a school district I worked in. . . did they put in healthy beverages? No tea beverages and chemical fruit juices. I do not think many people even know how to tell the difference between lemonade or chemical beverage flavored like lemons.

I saw photos of rows and rows of empty seats and then read they "mistakenly" refused some of the athlete's parents admission, too. So I think it is all very messed up.

Seems a bit of a balls up doesn't it. I also heard that loads of people were turned away from the archery. I am not really sure why they were turned away. Surely they had tickets in advance?

You are right about this health aspect, but as the Olympic committee you need money to run such a big sport event. This sponsors is a great help. I think it's the responsibility of the athlete, coaches and the team members to make sure their athletes gets the right food and drinks in order for them to stay physically fit in the games. Maybe they can try it, but not too much. We all know that eating/consuming plenty results to bad consequences, it should be balance. I know what you feel, i can see that you are maybe health conscious person. You're pictures shows you like fruits or vegetables.. :) But lets not be negative on this aspect, there are always reasons for everything. For me, i am an athlete surely i avoid this food if i am on a game. I will just try this one after the games, i'm sure there would enough reserved for me. :)

Yep. I am a bit of a health conscious person. Does it show? My opinion is that if you are going to be serious about your health and the sport that you play that you would want to avoid these foods (and I use the term foods loosely) at all costs at all times. Not just before an event. I do understand that they need money and lots of it to run such a massive event, but there are plenty of other companies out there who I am sure would like to be an official partner of the Olympic Games. They may not be prepared to pay quite as much, but I think that this is where a balance between money and ethics should come into it. To me, going for companies such as McDonalds and Coca cola is just not ethical when you are trying to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle. If they cannot find a healthy food partner who is able to be marketed throughout the world, then perhaps they should choose other companies that are not food related. I am sure that the games would also gain lots of income from ticket sales and media deals so that they could be a little bit more reasonable with their choice of food partners.

Hmm.. reading your reply. I am beginning to understand your point. We really don't know why they choose this companies, hopefully some organizers would see this and realize they have the wrong decision of choosing this 2 companies. I am praying that by the next olympic games they will find a more suitable sponsor for the olympic games. For now, it's up to the coaches and the team that our players get the proper nourishment for the games they are playing.

Yes! Wise words friend and not to mention McDonalds is the biggest animal killer too, they put hormones, break chickens legs by making them grow too fast, all a horrifying industry.

I am not at all surprised. We live in a world of hypocrasy on all levels. As I read this it reminds me of my daughter's visit to the the local Children's Hospital healthy lifestyle program. She is in it because she is borderline obese thanks to the many bad habits we as a family have practiced. Since leaving my husband I welcomed the support that a community like this can give me and my daughter to change a lot of these habits. They gave us a lot of great info, put her in an excercise class and finally did a blood draw to see where she is metabolically. All this was fine but here's the irony.....for being such a good patient for taking the needle, she was allowed to go into their "special" drawer and pick out any color she wanted of their sugary and chemical laden lollipops! And they were very large! The enemy of both health and teeth. Now they have added a treat that even I with my bad habits never give her. I said gee, what a great way to start a healthy lifestyle program.

I know exactly where you are coming from there. I remember being puzzled even as a child by the fact that they gave you sugary treats at the doctors every time you visited. I guess they just want repeat business! They also have Ronald McDonald house which is attached to children's hospitals where parents of chronically ill children can stay while their kids are in hospital. The chemicals in these fast foods play a big part in making the kids sick in the first place I reckon. We live in a world where logic is definitely thrown out the window.
