I had read a tip - not sure where - about how instead of buying tomato past in a can, you dehydrate tomatoes, put them through a grinder to make a powder. When a recipe calls for tomato paste, you make a paste with the powdered tomato and water. Has anyone done this before? If so, did it work out good? What type of tomatoes did you use?

My mum is doing something similar. She puts the fresh tomatoes in the blender and mix them very well. Then she takes off all the juice and keeps the past. She mixes the past with salt and oil I think (I am not sure if she adds any other ingredients), and she stores it in glass vases in the fridge. This tastes much better that the pasta that we buy from the super market. We add it to food, or we make tomato sause for pasta with it! Also, the juice part that comes off can be used. She puts it in ice cubes and freeze it so it's ready to also add in the food later!

Wow... I bet that would make better pasta sauce! Kudos to her for going through all that!

Thank you for sharing that tip. It is very useful to me. I would love to use homemade tomato paste than buying canned ones. I was really thinking how I could make a paste out of fresh tomatoes so now I would try dehydrating them then powderize them using my grinder. I am excited now how it will turn out. I am very fond of making spaghetti and as much as possible I want all the ingredients to be fresh and homemade. Again, thanks! And by the way it is also a good idea to plant your own tomatoes. They can grow healthily in pot. Look at this photo. It was planted by my friend two months ago and now she is enjoying the harvest.
