Indian Railway is one of the main transportation facility provided by Govt. and majority of the Indians would have used it in some situations. It is a very wide travel network in India which carries millions of people everyday. As it is controlled and govern by the Government, there are many problems and issues occurs.... I and my families, friends use Indian railway regularly. So I have came across some unsatisfied situations and poor services while traveling. Some common issues which occurs are uncleaned toilets, no water facility, problems with light and fans etc... But being a normal situation we all will blame the Government and leave away all those issues after the journey. And we don't even spend time to make a written complaint. And the situations stays as it is...... But for a change to happen we can also do something.... Recently I came across a mail from my friend and after reading that I was surprised with the service that Indian railway provided. I would like to share the incidents that was mentioned in the mail.... "From M.V.Ramana Murthy Incident 1 It happened few months back. We were traveling and me & family were waiting in the A/C waiting room at Secunderabad Station. The attached bathroom was not clean and was giving bad smell. Added to this discomfiture, the bathroom door was not closing tight, and I also observed that shutter was not closing tight because of faulty door closer. I complained to the attendant . I also sent an SMS " The bathroom of A/C waiting room on platform No 1 of Secunderbad Station is dirty and stinking. Pl arrange cleaning . Also the door is not closing properly". After few minutes we left the waiting room as our train arrival was announced. Within few minutes I received text reply from Railways, giving an Id No and that action will be taken . After few hours I received a message that the bathroom has been cleaned . After ten days I received another message that the faulty door has been repaired and thanking me. Incident 2 Recently on 24 th October I and my wife were traveling by Hyderabd Ajmeer Express on our Rajasthan trip. Next day morning, I noticed there was no water in the bathroom and the taps are all dry, whereas our journey will continue and we will be reaching our destination ( Bhilwara near Ajmeer) after another 18 hours. I was worried that it is going to be a miserable time to travel without water. Water or No water, people will continue to use the bathrooms and the stink will become unbearable. I complained to the Conductor.. I also sent a SMS "Traveling in the A1 compartment of Hyderabad Ajmeer express train No 12720. No water in the bathrooms . Pl arrange. Also replace leaking valves else problem repeats." Pat came the reply" Your reference id is 1110250019. For status visit www.scr.indianrailways.in. or SMS as STATUS (SPACE) id TO 8121281212 . Thanks for registering complaint " . After about 20 minutes I received message that water will be filled at the nearest Railway station having water filling facility. At Itarsi station, water was filled and we had no problem . After about a week I received another message that the faulty valves have been replaced . It was amazing. I am thankful to the Railway authorities for introducing a system where one can complain from a running train even and doubly grateful that they have acknowledged the complaint and attended. I collected this help line number from the Railway waiting room ! Many times while traveling by train we are put to unexpected inconvenience, we react by cursing and criticizing. No other response. Of course once we reach our destination we just forget. There is no use in cursing the darkness around you, do light a candle however small it be, it gives an inspiration and ten more candles will be lit . The process continues reducing the darkness." The Railway Number to which you can SMS is 8121281212 . Please pass on this message to your friends and it may help some one in need including you. I felt very happy after reading this. I have not tried the facility yet, but will surely use this facility next time if I finds some problem while traveling. Hope you will find this Helpful... Happy Mylotting...

I always feel that there are a lot more that can be improved by railway authority in India, since so many Indians are using the train as their major means of transportation to criss-cross the nation, the government should at least look into ways to improve on the service, security and personal safety issues immediately before accident/terror strike again. There is no need to wait for loss of life before approapriate action should be taken, it should be done when the train and rail track are put into service.

This is a good bit and a great compliment to the Indian Railways. I hope that they continue with their good work. However, they should work more towards cleanliness and hygiene.

yes, it is a big network and it need many improvements. I think these kind of initiatives are good to make the service better. I think railway should use more advanced technology to avoid accidents and all.

Ye, many trains are too old, and the condition of the coaches are very poor. They just repaint the coaches and use it, as you said for long journeys its very difficult to travel. And Govt. is not at all interested in the happiness so passengers, they will not do anything until we complain. So we should use these facilities. Happy Mylotting..

Someone should have used this facility in TN express. But our problem is, we don't know how to do certain things and where to do complaints or suggestion. Sometimes a single sms can avoid a great trouble but we have to do it. that is why shared the mail to mylot members.

Amidst a lot of negative news, and incidents, here comes something which highlights positive work done by a state owned institution. It is also important to note that accomplishing such a thing at Railways is a difficult thing given the complex environment they work and having a huge spread.

Yes, making such a facility in a big network like railway is always a tough task. If this one works fine, then its really amazing. And everyone should utilize it properly.

Ramasamy: Thanks for sharing such a useful information. It speaks very good about Indian Railways. In one of the very big hotels in Toronto -- Indian lunch costs $15.95. Only one rest room for men was there and in that the latch was not working. When I went there a young boy came and I told him you go--I will stand outside and see nobody comes. He used the rest room and went away. I was really surprised at this--normally in USA , Canada rest rooms are maintained well in government as well as private establishments. I am happy to know the swift action being taken by Indian Railway people. good. For the number of trains run the service rendered is very good.

interesting. I did not complain. That is not a place where we go frequently. So i left it as it is and was reminded of that when I read your discussion. In Chennai -- at least 40% of engineering colleges do not have proper sanitation facilities. many toilets do not have fixed door, water. They are not cleaned properly. Some toilets will not have light. They charge huge amount as fees and still nobody bothers about such facilities. Students cannot complain because their internal marks will be tampered by the teachers.

Yes students have limitations like this, specially when they have to make the teachers happy for internal marks. But there are some places where we can do complaints, so in that places we should complaint. But colleges should be kept clean, we know that these kind of issues are seen in many places in our country. But if student protest as a group, then this can be solved. In my college hostel when there was no water, they complained and no action was taken. So finally all the boys in hostel came to college at 9am with towel, tooth brush, soap etc in their hand in front of principal room. After that the management made it correct. So everywhere we have to do complaint, otherwise things will never change.

Hi, Thank you very much for this information. I am saving the number in my mobile phone and also pass it to my near and dear ones. One thing which i observed the request which you sent should be sent by railway authorities(representative), who is in charge of that train, but still good thing that they have provided help line numbers which help us to inform to concerned department and get that work done.
