Is it true that being homeschooled has its advantages over normal schooling? Can anyone cite the big advantages for me, because I really can't put my head around this whole homeschooling stuff.

I can think of many very important advantages for those who are able to be homeschooled (by a qualified person or group of people). The most compelling reasons, in my opinion are time and customized learning opportunities. Students in school waste an enormous amount of time. -waiting for other people's questions to be answered -transitioning from one subject to another at set times regardless of the educational impact of that timing -getting to and from school -listening to explanations that they already understand -listening to explanations that they can't understand because they are directed at a student at a different level -listening to announcements that don't pertain to them -participating in school events that have no relevance for them I could go on like this forever and you probably could too once you started... Homeschooling, on the other hand, is geared very specifically to the individual student. It adapts to the individual student's needs and wastes less time in doing so. It also can happen 365/24/7. Incredible learning opportunities in the real world are missed by most kids because they are stuck in a big building during the best part of the day. Homeschoolers can be out in the real world going on field trips, interning at businesses, etc. An important side benefit of this outside the time box method of schooling is it blurs the lines between work and play which is a much better way to create lifelong learners than the on and off mentality of traditional schooling. Another important aspect of homeschooling is socialization. Critics claim that homeschooled students are missing out on the opportunity to get "socialized" even while those same critics gripe about how kids act these days and how bad the schools are. Face it, our schools are socializing our kids in bad ways. They are learning negative behaviors and they are spending the majority of their time in environments that are both overcrowded and very homogenous in terms of age and perspective. Sticking students all together by age really limits their ability to learn from diverse perspectives and get support from a variety of people that the real world could offer them. Schools are an artificially created environments that really don't make much sense for kids or teachers. Admittedly, a lot of passionate educators are working wonders in our schools, but really, the fact that we still run most schools on a harvest schedule regardless of the pedagogical reasons not to is evidence that we still have a long way to go if we want to make our schools better match our students' needs.

I like your detailed explanation about homeschooling. It is really a great alternative for people both young and old to learn.

They said that homeschooling is good to avoid bullies in school and some stressed encountered by the kids. However, there are also some disadvantages. Socializing is one. They don't get a great chance of interaction with other students. Sometimes, competition with classmates is not in the field of home schooling. Furthermore, attending educational trips are also limited when it comes to homeschooling.

Good to hear that there are such homeschool groups having educational trips. Here in our country, such school program is not yet familiar to many. These has been only done by some celebrity kids and those that have illness that needs to be resting at home. I think one of the advantage of homeschooling is that you have the full attention to your kid and you are not afraid of how he performs in their school

There are tons of Home School groups now a days where the children go on field trips, and to local events here. =) They go to the park, the zoo, the children's museum, etc. As for the competition aspect, I am putting my child in Gymnastics. She can compete there. They will be very social if they are in sports through the town or extra curricular activities. Even the library has TONS of free events for kids of all ages! It is great!

As others have said already there are many advantages. The only argument ALL people come up with is the social aspect of it. Um...put them in a sport or some kind of extra curricular activity, its not hard! My oldest will be in Gymnastics. Plus I babysit at home so my children already have TONS of friends their ages! Plus here in my town we have Home School groups where all of the Home Schooled Kids in this town go on all kinds of Field Trips together! How cool! =) I personally think and feel Home School is the better choice and it is what I am doing with my own children. They will have plenty of socialization with other children!

We had home school groups in Tucson, and my boys loved them. You're lucky you always have kids around. I was glad I made the choice for the three years I did-- both my boys are doing well, one in the Army and one over the road trucking. The home school program I used sponsored four get togethers a month for the kids, but that was uncommon at the time. Luckily, there are tons of places kids can go now to find friends. The social aspect is the biggest drawback for some people, because of lack of time or lack of money. But it certainly shouldn't stop parents from homeschooling their kids, and I hope I didn't imply it should!

Yeah my children always have kids around their ages! I love babysitting. =) For the people that do not have time to take their children to social events, well then they should probably not be Home Schooling. We all know it takes a lot of time to home school. Those people should probably just send their children to school. As for the rest of us, we MAKE time for our children to go places with other children. There are tons of places in my town at least. Church, children's museum which is SO cheap ($2 per child)!, parks, zoo, etc... Like I said as well, there is one group here that every weekend they are going somewhere all together, like the places I mentioned. Some of the places are free or very cheap! I don't have a lot of money but I could afford to take the kids! =) The social part of it is a very easy solution to me, I figured it out quite simply! Lol. =)

Well, the two of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Here are the advantages of homeschooling in my own view: 1. No chance to be bullied that degrades self confidence. 2. Your tutor has all the time to observe you and change his style often to help you better. 3. You can choose your tutor. 4. You will have a flexible schedule. 5. You will not experience peer pressure. So i guess, the disadvatages are the opposite and more. :D Cheers, hope i helped. =D

The advantages seem to benefit those people who are bored with the humdrum routine of schools. If that presumption is correct, I guess most younger kids will want to be homeschooled just because kids have shorter attention spans.

For me, the biggest advantage of homeschooling is that the parent or the tutor will be just focusing only to him, unlike in school that the teacher has a lot of students to teach. Basing on my experience, I have enrolled my son into a private school when he was in kinder up to grade 2 and when he comes home, I still tutor him all his lessons and it really made me feel bad about it and decided him to be enrolled into a home school program. Teachers cannot teach all of her student because some students are inattentive. But still no matter what are they in the most important thing is the quality of education. In home school they will still learn how to dance, play with other kids and interact with other kids but that depends on how will you able to do it. The disadvantage of homeschooling is that kids will never experience how to compete with other kids.

If it is fro your kid prefer normal schooling.Their your child can learn many things. He can have good friend in his school, he can play dance and enjoy with all. When you prefer homeschooling, he will get only education.Apart from he will miss every thing. He will not know how to mingle with others.

If you are someone who is always ahead of the curve, homeschooling is great-- you learn more. If your child is focused and likes to learn they will learn more at home. People also home school their children because of religious beliefs, or cultural differences. The biggest plus is an eager student working with a motivated parent always learns more. I home schooled both my boys for three years, from 5th to 8th grade, because they were both bored silly in public school-- as was I at that age. The drawback is the child doesn't learn how to deal with every day social problems like bullying, for instance. You have to make sure a home schooled child gets out and spends time with other kids frequently, so their social maturity keeps up with their intellect.

I think that normal schooling is the best route. Especially if your kids have any issues. I have bi-polar or ODD issues which I am glad that there are programs in the schools here to help with. I couldn't do it all at home. If you have normal kids with no issues and they will do the work and home schooling is something you can do in your home then that is great.

I think that the advantages about home schooling are the flexibility and the chance to learn the exactly the things that you need. When you are in a classroom you sometimes have to listen to things that you already understand because there are other students who didn't understand those things yet. If there is something that you don't understand you can get help from the teacher, but the teacher has to divide his or her time among the students so you can't get help from the teacher all the time, you often have to wait while the teacher is busy helping someone else. When you are homeschooled your teacher focuses on you and he or she can adjust the lessons according to your needs. The negative thing about homeschooling is the social aspect. Group projects are a big part of the lessons in my countries and when you are homeschooled you don't get any experience from group projects. You don't get the chance to practice oral presentations in front of the class either.

In Malaysia I have a couple of friends whom children attended homeschooling. They prefer to do homescholing because : 1) It is International syllabus and will be recognised internationally as most of them plans to further their studies in America or Australia. 2) Faster than our national schooling system, for example at the age of fifteen, those in national school are doing Form Three whereas those in homeschooling are doing 'O' Level of Form Five. Save and faster by two years. However it all depends on individual pace and self discipline.

Actually, I tend to think that there are advantages to both homeschooling and also traditional schooling. The advantage that I can think of right off to a child that is homeschooled is that they are able to learn at their own pace. This is a great advantage because there are many times in traditional schooling here students are either held back because of their classmates or they are pushed ahead because the rest of their class is moving faster than they are.

As in normal or regular school, home school has also its advantages. I based this on experience, my daughter is enrolled in home schooling. I really don't know the reason why she stopped going to a regular high school where she was last enrolled before I decided to enroll her in a home study plan as I really don't want to know its reason. During her elementary days, she didn't report to school for over a week because I knew later that she was bullied. So when she really stopped going to the regular school, I decided not to know the reason as I thought she may had been bullied or may had experienced discrimination as she came from a public school. For the parents of a home schooler, financially there is an advantage, no daily pocket money for the student, school contributions for organizations, etc. but there is a disadvantage regarding the social life of the student, the lack of socializing. I think that a person should still have to socialize with his/her fellow students or whatever. Regarding the learning of a home schooler, well they can still compete with the regular schoolers.

dear it depends on who you are. Personally i think normal schooling is better. But for people who are asking that question here it is.\ normal schooling -children will make friends - sheduled schooling - differant classes homeschooling - flexible schooling -no bullies or loss of self cofindence - you teach your own children extra skills needed - children will go at their own pace

I homeschool my 8 year old and for me the choice was very simple. I am a school teacher and I see what really goes on in school everyday and it's not really a place I want my child. I don't teach at a bad school either. I just don't find it to be an environment that I feel is beneficial to her. Public school is not generally a good fit for kids that are very bright or very mature for their age. She tried it for one year and while she enjoyed it, she learned nothing and it's a long day. It seems to me like public school is really more like free daycare for working parents. I must also mention that my daughter is a competitive gymnast so she trains 25 hours a week. She needed a short school schedule of getting her work done and then resting for gym. She also has a great peer group at the gym and they are actually kids I'm happy to have her socialize with.

Well, i think home school is an option but i lacks from the social part.I mean your kid will probably will learn more things, but he/she wont meet so much kids and have some fun.
