I see that two people have recommended OpenOffice but the latest version of this is called LibreOffice: http://www.libreoffice.org/ I have used both and they are both good but LibreOffice seems to be slightly more stable and faster. There are several reviews online which compare the two packages. All seem to feel that LibreOffice has more features than OpenOffice: http://www.datamation.com/osrc/article.php/3923351/OpenOfficeorg-vs-LibreOffice.htm

There's a longer (and more detailed) article here: http://www.infoworld.com/d/applications/open-office-dilemma-openofficeorg-vs-libreoffice-716?page=0,0

I didn't know any of them before I started using Linux. The first time I installed Linux it came with the Open Office package. After I updated my PC and changed the OS to a newer Linux version that now uses Libre Office.

I have not come across libreoffice.org earlier and hence I recommended openoffice. If however libreoffice is better than openoffice then one can as well go in for libreoffice. good day.

OpenOffice and LibreOffice can read and write Office 2003 format files. They are not fully compatible with MS Office 2007 and later XML formats (with the .docx, .xlsx extensions). As long as people using Office 2007 and later can be persuaded to save all their documents in the earlier format, there will be little problem with using the two packages side by side.

Yugasini: Openoffice is required in western countries where we are not supposed to use ms office. In India we do get MS Office installed easily and there may not be need for openoffice. I think having the two --MS Office and Open office may not be a problem but compatibility for opening of files opened in another version is to be seen. I did not experience any problem while using open office in PC. now i use only ms office in my laptop. I have not heard about macintosh. good day.

You can try Apache OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org/), Apache OpenOffice open source. I don't use it since I don't feel comfortable using it. But many of my friends use it.

If you don't want to pay for MS Office, I would suggest other suites such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice. If you need just a word processor like MS Word, I have heard good things about AbiWord. If you need only a spreadsheet application like Excel, Gnumeric is also a free alternative to use.

I think that those looking for free software more like Microsoft Office uses Open Office. It may not be as polished and as good as Microsoft Office, but it should well do. After all, it is just free and still can be used as a word or spreadsheet processing program.
