I read that nowadays we can do A1C test for diabetes at home itself. This tells about the blood sugar level maintenance during the last three months. It seems there is an instrument A1C meter available for this. Has any mylot member used A1C meter and is that found useful in monitoring one's blood sugar level. Before coming to USA I tested my blood sugar levels. It was 104 fasting and 170 after food. In India such levels are considered not alarming and the doctor advised diabetes food with walking. I am ok but now and then get a thinking whether the sugar level may increase. I know it may not. good day.

You stay normally in Hyderabad. good. walking for 30 minutes a day is a good exercise and will improve our confidence level considerably. Take sweets in limited quantity -- 50 gms per day. ok.

Personally it would be interesting around the time they Doctor wants me to get mine done, do one at home and compare the results. There are many places who can do it that quick in their office, and then many who still have to send it out. I wish for all it was automatic. But then I think they are not really that cheap otherwise I would be tempted to buy one and check each month and see if I can establish a pattern of how to get it down some?

For people with diabetes-- it will be useful to watch and monitor. glucose meter is a must. this one can be be used if we cannot move out for check periodically.

Where I am in the US it is generally not considered bad either, especially if you have no other symptoms. I do not know how accurate these new AiC meters are, but the advice to watch what you eat, and walk more is very solid.

Oh A1C test can be done at home also? My father ordered one diabetes testing meter. Not sure it is A1C. I am told you can delete about 10 to 20 from that because these equipments tend to give alarming data. If tested in lab the results would definitely be lower. Have you ever tried that? We did, and that was true. I dont know if it was equipment specific related problem.

Vandana: Most commonly used instrument is the one which measure blood sugar level. that is available in India for around Rs.1500+++. For me such tests were showing more or less correct reading only. You can cross check one day by testing in the house and then immediately check in the lab. I have not tested/comparedthis so far.

hi ravi I have been a type 2 for years and my levels according to my doctor should be between 90 and 140, to most of our doctors now 170 would be called too high.they used to use it along with 90 but in the last few years they tell me 90 to 140 and I have to admit I a lot of times go past to 150 but so far my A1c has been really great like 6.4 or so. yes you should take some quick energy food with you when walking as exercise can pull down your blood sugar to too low.You get exercise and that is what I need to go now as it makes it easier to control your blood sugar. I have really thought about getting a home A1C kit but have not down so as my doctor insists on sending me to quest labs on account of my HMO. You are so smart to walk a lot. my own doctor said he wished he could write a prescription for just plain walking. lol. it is so easy as we all have to walk any way and going for a walk can be fun too.

yes. aunty. it is said such a test should be done once in three months only because the test is valid for three months. my A1C was also within allowable limits. I am not remembering now. aunty -- you go for walking in the morning or evening. nowadays it is hot outside even upto 8 pm. happy to note you are maintaining within limits prescribed. yes. in India family doctors feel --for people above 60 a score nearing 200 also is not a matter to be bothered as long as it is not varying too high. good day.
