Two years ago i had my son, all he did was just lying down when he was brand new, i thought it was so boring for him to be just lying down and doing nothing. Recently, i had my daughter and i feel the same way for her but i feel better this around because i have done it once already. Newborn babies are so small that there is not much we can do for them. So what do you mothers think about this withyour newborns?

Newborns don't get bored in the sense that we understand it. Much of the time they are sleeping, of course, but all the time that they are lying in their cots awake and apparently doing nothing, they are experiencing all the sights and sounds going on around them and gradually 'cataloguing' them and learning what they mean. Curtains waving, light on the ceiling, people talking, music playing, dogs barking and all of the sounds outside are completely new and interesting to a new born baby. They don't know what they mean yet but they are very quickly learning to associate them with pleasure or distress and (later on) 'danger'. There is nothing boring about all these experiences. I recently had an insight into something of how a newborn probably sees the world around it. I was recovering from an operation and was on a heavy morphine drip. There were times when I was completely unable to make sense of my surroundings. I could see shapes and things moving and hear people talking in the ward but they were all 'new' and had no meaning in themselves. They were just shapes, colours, sounds and movements which I could experience but couldn't fit together into a recognisable pattern. It is very hard to describe the experience but it was not in the least scary, merely 'interesting'.

I can see my newborn daughter starts focusing on the noices and the things we show in front of her slowly, she looks alert so I think she is learning everyday :-)

Hello mermaidivy, I think a newborn baby may feel too many things, but not bored. Everything is new to them. They were used to be sheltered in their mummy tummy and they need to sleep all day because they are developing each minute, and they were used to rest most of time very comfortable, in silence. Newborns are adapting to their new world. They are growing and they are getting used to their new world. Everything is new to them. Everything around. All! They are getting used to air, to food, to their parents touch, to their motherĀ“s chest and arms, to their own body, to their brothers voice and games, and shouts . I think that they sleep to much, because they get tired soon of this blast of new experiences. And because their bodies are growing very fast also, so they need to rest while adapting to a whole day rutine. Blessings for your family!
