Jesse Robredo: Filipino

August had become a month of mourning for the Filipinos. This is the month when the nation celebrates and honors the heroes of the land, those who dedicated their very lives for freedom and the betterment of the lives of the people. Uncannily, Ninoy Aquino was assassinated 21 August 83. Then his wife Cory, the first woman president of the country, passed away 1 August 2009. Last Saturday, one man, called by the name Jesse Robredo, the secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, never confirmed by the Commission of Appointments, but nevertheless performed his duties to the best of his abilities, was tragically killed in a plane crash. His demise, to the surprise of his own wife and children, brought a nation in tears and grief. I, for one, not even knowing the man, did allow those tears to roll down my cheeks. Why? Because I see him on the news, quietly standing beside or behind the President, but never called attention for himself. When all the others, in the arena of politics and governance tended to get loud, and indeed were loud, Jesse Robredo went about serving as a public servant should. He was serene, as if there was an aura enveloping his image. When his death was announced, the tears dropped heavy, not only from those he knew, but most of all, from the countless hearts from the masa whom he touched, in ways most simple, like sweeping the street, when he was Mayor of the city. He was bestowed the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2000, and we didn't even know that. He never boasted about his achievements, but the people saw his goodness and kindness. Jesse Robredo: Public Servant, Filipino.

That is already a given, I think he is smiling even, as he looks down upon the crowd who had come to bid him one last salute.

Jesse Robredo is really simple, humble and good public servant. He will always be remembered because of what he had done to serve the people.I truly admire him because he never brags the things he had achieved nor tell or broadcast the things he did.He thinks first of others needs before himself. He is an example of a good leader and a public servant.

Tales of his simplicity and sincerity and serenity are getting printed now, as we talk about the man whose only desire is to serve his neighbor. Greatness becomes him who never sought it.

I as a Nagueno myself deeply is in pain seeing a good public servant passed away. I have witness all his good works in my place and the progress he made in my place. He made the city from a sleepy city to becoming alive and happy place to live in now. I guess the Lord has been pleased with his works that he decided to reward him of a good rest already. Although he could have done more to the country but I think our Creator wanted to reward him now. I think he is in a better place where there are no more politics and drama. He will be sorely missed in all the occasions in our place since he is very visible mingling with us like a regular citizen of our city when fiestas and special occasions in our city.

Yes I do believe it. When he was just appointed as underscretary the city rejoiced it since he just finished his term in Naga. We believed that he can do what he has done with the City in a bigger way. I know our Mayor after the first three terms he never clamored for higher position but instead studied abroad instead. When he returned he ran again and was successful for another three terms. He was actually planning of going to studies again but he was offered by Pnoy so he decided to join in his team. I just hope that what he started in DILG would grow and bear fruit. I believe it will depend on who will replace him.

Jesse Robredo, now we know, created a ripple effect. Surely, the others are wanting to be given the honors that was bestowed on the fallen secretary posthumously. So, they are doing a Robredo, ha ha.

Jesse Robredo was given the chance to spread that service to all the Filipinos, and I believe that he had successfully planted the seeds that will eventually become his legacy of greatness. His last act was planting, wasn't it?

dear eileen, it is very rare to see public servants like mr robredo. the whole nation loves him: the first one i remember is president magsaysay, second and third, the father and mother of our incumbent president. in their demise , the nation showed their support with good words and sympathies to their families and to the nation as well. may his soul rest in peace. ann

Indeed, good people truly, no matter the hurdles they have to overcome, can really spell the difference. The people you mentioned were sincere, and the people saw that. Jesse Robredo has a few up his sleeves, for he was brilliant, a visionary actually, and his innate simplicity, his kindness, and his deep faith in the Almighty, all in all, made him a great man.

I will admit that I never cared to know more about Jesse Robredo when he was still alive. To me, he was simply a member of the Cabinet. A friend of the President. That is all I know about him. But the moment I learned of the plane crash, and the first few hours of his missing, I found myself praying for his safety. When one full day passed, I knew that he had passed away. I figured that, in this day and age when even the most remote person in the most remote location has a mobile phone on hand, that is Sec. Robredo was only washed ashore somewhere, surely someone would've found him and "texted" or called about it to someone. And then, all the stories and documentary episodes about him kept showing on the television. I found myself admiring the guy for his quiet, simple but remarkable ways. He was truly a humble but brilliant person, father, friend, politician, public servant, and Filipino. The late Sec. Robredo is now my model of what kind of person I want for office. I do hope there are still many of him out there!

The news really shocked every Filipino. Everyone felt the lost of a very important and honest person here in the Philippines. Im not really into politics, but when people tell all the good things that he has done into our country it just makes me feel sad.
