Worst childhood disease experience?

As a child, I had some health problems that hindered my performance in activities. I had allergies and asthma. I also had chicken pox at one point, but I don't remember that experience too well. Anyway, for me, allergies still continue to influence my life, especially in Spring. My worst experience for childhood disease was asthma. I remember watching other kids playing and running around at our local park with ease. For me, I could not run very for very long. I frequently would run for a few minutes and then take a break to use my inhaler. At times, the condition of my asthma got worse. Besides using an inhaler when I was outside, I had to use a nebulizer at home. Breathing in that mist was horrible; it's the smell that still lingers in my memories. Luckily, I eventually outgrew my asthma. Now, I can run for a longer duration and do not need the aid of an inhaler. To all myLotters, what was your worst childhood disease that you remember?

I actually don't remember anything too bad when I was a kid other than having strep throat and chicken pox. My daughter has the exact same problem that you did though. The asthma and allergies and they seem to go hand in hand. She takes umpteen medications for it and I'm hoping that she will also grow out of it because it's horrible! And it scares the crap out of me. She has to always carry an inhaler and also uses the nebulizer. She has to take an anti-inflamatory in it once a week and steroids once a month. She can't do anything that she wants to. If she's running around playing for any more than 10 or 15 minutes she can't breathe. She was in cheerleading last year and sat out most of the games because she would get so winded. I know this is a little off of your topic, but if you don't mind me asking, around what age did you notice it to not be as bad? Is it something that happened quickly or did it just taper off over the years?

Actually, my symptoms of asthma tapered off over the years. I remember I was in kindergarten when my parents noticed my asthma; so I was around 5-6 years old. It gradually got worse over the years. For some reason, my conditions would fluctuate from bad to worse during winter and spring seasons. I think I was about 9-10 years old when the asthma started to disappear; in 3rd grade, I remember being more active in my school's sport teams for soccer and basketball. I am just grateful that I experienced asthma as a child rather than as an adult. Anyway, thanks for your comment, MsControversy.

MsControversy, in regards to your daughter's asthma, this is a very informative site www.earthclinic.com/CURES/asthma4.html#H2O2INHALATIONTHERAPY_75442 They don't sell anything, I just thought you might be interested in the information. It's a very interesting web site.

I myself don't remember anything like that. I only used to get sores on my legs and that was every year, me and my bothers used to get. I don't know why. It was bad and it was looking very ugly. Sometimes the pus used to come out and I use to be embarrassed. but It was only when I was in my primary school. My mother used to say it was because we used to eat too much sugar that's why we got sores. Otherwise I have seen my sister in law's son. He is a heart patient and was operated when he was 8 months old. They when he became 3 years another major operation happened. Poor fellow is 5 years old now and sometimes need nebulizer and all. I feel sorry for the boy. He is suffering lot. Have a wonderful day ahead.

Regarding to your experience with sores, I am glad to hear that it does not happen anymore. And about your sister in law's son, I hope that he recovers quickly and does not have to experience any other major surgeries in the future. I also hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks for your comment, riyauro.

I had allergies but not asthma but I do remember something that must have been like your nebulizer that had Mentholatum or something in it at night when I was sleeping. I think I had measles at some point. I know I had chicken pox and mumps at the same time. My worst problem however was that I was very late to start talking and when I did it no one could understand me. I personally think that since I was born as what they call or used call a blue baby, that is not getting enough oxygen and then was given pure oxygen which is considered bad these days, that my brain was affected in a small way. I think the wiring between what I heard and my brain trying to turn that into speech was all messed up. Eventually it found a new route and my speech got better although I had to take speech therapy all the way through elementary school. It also affected how I heard music. As late as high school I can remember that the only way I could clap along with the beat being played was visually by watching the other students do it. I still have problems carrying a tune and recognizing different keys. I also have problems with some accents.

I also had an experience itchy skin rashes during my childhood years but not with the chicken pox stuffs. I have this strong immunity when I was in my childhood up until now. Maybe it is because I love eating vegetables when I was a kid. I am still eating vegetables rather than meats now! That's far things I remember since then.

as for me, i never really had health problems hindering my activities outdoors. i was kind of healthy. except for some flu and cough, that wouldn't stop me either. but once i had chickenpox. it was the worse ever. i couldn't go to school because the school nurse said it is contagious and could spread to the whole school. i couldn't play outside either. my friends are scared to get near me.

I had the chicken pox but I was too young to remember. When I was 10 I got the mumps which was painful to have. And when I was 8 my younger brother got the measles. I played with him and kept him company but never got sick. The doctor told my mother I probably had a natural immunity to the measles because I didn't get them. Then, 8 years later when I was 16, I got up one Saturday morning and was going to get dressed to meet my friends. I didn't feel so good. I came out of my room and my older brother said "What's wrong with you?" I said huh? He told me to go look in the mirror. My face was flushed looking and I lifted up my shirt and my whole stomach was covered in measles. So was the rest of me. I got to stay out of school for about a week , which made me happy. I guess I'm lucky that that was the worst of it. And I really haven't been sick much since then. The end.

I had rheumatic fever when I was little. It's not common at all today, but it's caused by the strep bacteria. I was very sick for awhile. I remember lying on a cot in Grandma's house, not able to get up and play. I had to take a pill that I didn't like to swallow so Mom hid it in sandwiches. I can still taste that awful thing! The rheumatic fever caused a heart murmur that will be with me always. It doesn't bother me now but there is always that possibility.

For me, I have been so active during my childhood days that I usually tend to drop or fall on the grounds resulting to a multiple scars all over my legs which at this time hinders myself of wearing shorts because of I am already ashamed of showing it to the world that I have a multiple scars....

Well I had the chicken pox, that was bad... and I had a horrible stomachache-diarrea-vomits combo that lasted a couple of days, my parents ended up with me in the hospital... and I screamed while the nurses were trying to make me a blood test.

It is not a disease, but I had undergone general facial surgery around 5 years old. The outcome, I am so forgetful due to general anesthesia that was administered to me. But now, I am fine.
