I've heard some people say that alcoholism is hereditary. I think society is the main reason. I've had a relative say it was hereditary, if that was the case EVERYONE in our family would be alcoholics and not everyone is an alcoholic. I guess it would also depend on the real definition of an alcoholic? To me saying that a person's alcoholism is related to it being hereditary is an excuse for them. I believe that we have choices, just like some one who has been abused as a child. That person that was abused as a child, can use that excuse for abusing their own children? They had choices to overcome and change that behavior to their own children. So, I think a person has choices and problem solving to do in their lives to change such things that have been in their lives that aren't positive.

I believe you are right. I believe we can have a life different from what we inherit. It is our individual choice as a thinking person.

You and I must think alike. I had a friend who grew up in a house that was basically filled with two hoarders....she hated it but when she got her own apartment she did the same. I finally said to her one day....you can see as an adult what is right and wrong....why wouldn't you pick doing things the right way? Maybe there are built in weaknesses that do somewhat determine what we think or do....but we all still have choices.
