Work Ethics

Each work organization has its own culture. One is lucky to belong to a company that upholds true values, and love its employees and workers that bring them profit. Sadly, not all companies consider the welfare of the members of the organization as one of those that has to be prioritized. What would you do if you are surrounded by demotivated or demoralized employees and workers? The easiest way would be to go with the flow I bet. But here's a story: One day, in the middle of a discussion between a superior and a subordinate, the former talked about how disappointed he is with the present situation. The concerns that need more attention, and to add, requires to be immediately given attention, were ignored, or set aside. The subordinate, with the same grievances, but on a different level, listened and mentioned that it is truly difficult to work with demotivated or demoralized employees. The subordinate continued that she would not given in to the situation because she has her own set of principles for herself, and that she has to maintain self-respect. The superior agreed and seemed to have been enlightened. Have you had similar situations? Are there situations or conditions in your company similar to this one? Are there situations that may not be exactly the same but also magnifies poor management? If so, how are you dealing with them?

I am retired and am so glad I am. But the last company I worked for was a callcenter named Electronic Data Systems. It has offices all over the world. It was really a very good company to work for and I enjoyed the five years I worked for them. We had meetings all the time and a boss that we could talk to about anything or a greivance number we could call. We had certain guidlines and opporational expectations that we had to go by. So if we had a problem we had channels we could go through.

I'm lucky that I don't have to deal with any kind of poor management at this point in time in my life. However, when I was working outside the house at the hospital, I was working for a manager that really didn't seem to know how to operate a department. She was literally one of those people that was constantly allowing people to take time off without prior requests and then turning around and calling people into work that had specifically requested a day off of work.

you have a point, susie. we can be help up against our own principles in life because of the need to have a job. but it must not stop there, we have to find a way to get out of this web of poor management.

Sorry to say but every company is this way to some extent they all have their favorite employees and they also have those employees that they would like to see leave, the company I work for is basicly a good company but the managers sometimes go to the extreme as it depends on the situation, I have with my company a very long time I have seen employees come and go and i have also seen managers come and go in this day of more people then jobs you need to handle the situation and cope as best as you can as jobs are very hard to find these days,. don't get me wrong sometimes I come home so angry but then I take a deep breath and count to `0 sometimes 20 and get a grip on things and I am better in the morning, that;s how I deal with the situation

I have known somebody who has become really successful with his business for so many years. Of course,he wouldn't be achieving success without the help of his workers. For 30 years, these workers have become really loyal to him and the company. Sadly, when he decided to close down his business coz he thinks he is too tired to run the business,he refused to give his workers the right separation pay for each of them. This has brought great disappointment among the workers and they had to bring the case to the Department of Labor. I pity the workers coz I think they need more than what they have received. It was through their hard work that made the company make it big. Over a year after, the boss reconsidered their plea and everything went well.

that's good news. it is such a bad attitude to turn your back from the very same people who had put you to the top. ill-bred is the best description.

Our office is like a jungle, there are very few people who can survive. The Management won't really look upon the welfare of ALL the employees. Favoritism and unfairness are very visible. Those who cling to those who are at the top are the ones who gets priority. They promote politics and competition among their employees. This culture has been here for quite a while. Most of the employees are already used to it. They would just say that they won't apply for higher position because they knew already that the management would choose different people. It is kind of sad because I've been with a company whose management and employees treat everyone as a family. I've never felt the same in my new office. I really do not know how to deal with it especially that I am aware that the management won't take criticism. They don't like their employees to talk about negative regarding their leadership style but you'll often hear them scold and embarrass employees in front of so many. Well, I haven't been in the situation that I am so tired of it that I wanted all these to stop. But I hope that everyone in the office would like to have a new boss.

politics in an organization is a bad thing. it can never go right that is why it becomes a jungle. i remember someone saying that one owner of a company wants to promote his policy of 'divide and rule', very opposed to the changing times' challenges.

I have strong work ethics and sometimes, my peers can go with the flow with me or they lagged behind. I had never or yet experienced poor management but I see some small signs every now and then. It's not being self-centric but I do mind my business from time to time. I try to do my best but sometimes, it is the management's problems and not my work.

a good employee who has set principles could never last forever in a company that does not have a strong and sensible leader. employees stay because they enjoy.

We are experiencing this situation. Our boss is a foreigner. He has a negative thought about my countrypeople. We couldn't understand him because we've been working with him for more than four years and he still sees us bad employees. He said that we are only after the money.Of course,we are after the money because we've been working for it.He makes money because of us but he still looks down on us.We can't just work for free.We just ignore his poor management because we love our jobs.We always do our best.

that's a grave accusation - that you are only after the money. it must be hard working with a foreign boss. aside from the struggle understanding this boss, they are sometimes not trusting their workers or employees because they are foreigners. how shallow it is for your boss to have this kind of mentality.

I was in some situation like that. Bosses went to singapore and didnt give annual raise. Felt terrible. Inflation in our country is much higher especially at lower income levels because that is truly Consumer price index.. Never could resolve the problem.

unless, as the thesids say, resign. in hopeless situations, i also believe that it is better to leave, and find greener pastures ahead. a cousin once told me that one has to leave his comfort zone to do something extraordinary.

Dear Ms Bingskee If I was in an organization where people were demotivated or demoralized... the first thing I would think and do is submit my resignation after finding another job. I have been a workaholic all throughout and I cannot be doing nothing... I am so impatient and restless too and that adds to my problems if I am with these kind of people who remain demotivated or demoralized. Even today when I am ill and work from home, if I have sufficient work, even today I do not hesitate working for around 20 hours (like the past two days and I have two more days of work left) Trying to educate these people or even try to find and get them motivated is not going to do me any good and hence I must quit. I had been once been with such an organization where the marketing and sales would not get any students. The co-teachers were happy as they had only a class per day and rest of the day they would gossip, chat use Internet etc. I tried to continue for two months but when I felt that they are more interested in such activities rather than doing their jobs better, I left the organization. Luckily, there has been no such next time and today, the chances of me getting back to work at office are remote.

ha ha that's truly funny to say that you'll resign, but it might be the reaction and action of some. for other people though, it is not that easy to decide on resigning. you know, the tough times we are having now, and the growing expenses which think will not go down anymore but continue to rise. you are right in saying that it is like hopeless to educate these people. very true, as i am experiencing this. reason most probably is they are already old enough to learn new tricks. you know the saying.
