radish, really?

radish - radish vegetable
September 21, 2012 8:59am CST
This may sound utterly ridiculous to some people, but up until this afternoon, I had completely no idea what to do with a radish. I had often seen the lovely little pink vegetable in my local supermarket, and have often heard of horseradish sauce, but to be honest I’d never tasted it, and wondered what one did with the little vegetable. I saw a television programme last night were someone seemed to be chopping up a radish to put into a salad, and I actually thought surely I must be hearing things, aren’t they supposed to be hot? Lol.. so for those of you who eat radish often, and think I am insane, what do you think of this? Ps] radish eating ideas would be appreciated!

i know how that vegetable looks like. its small, cute and lovable. but in our place its appearance is not like that. it is long and the colour of it is white unlike what you mentioned that it is round seem like and have a red colour. well, it is nice to have it in a salad. but i drain from its juices so that it is not so bitter to the taste. put a little sugar on it with vinegar and little amount of salt. you can put a cucumber in it too.. enjoy

whoah! i guess orson does not try having it like that or at least try to taste after preparing that kind of salad before throwing it in a bin. well, we have this kind of soup being cooked in here and it is called sinigang. it is a kind of soup that have a sour taste because if tamarind being added to it or any ingredient that is apt putting to it like guava or else. the other ingredient being added to this kind of dish is that raddish. and orson, hmmm... do not tell me again to throw in in a bin. i live in philippines and surely people knew that kind of dish and it tasted nice like of those salad i suggested above. arf! arf!

Thanks to this discussion, I read some material about the radish and one day later, I bought some small radishes. Today, I decided to have 2 small radishes in a salad with one small tomato, cucumber, Kohlrabi and Tahini as a sauce. It came out tasty, healthy and the hot taste of the radish was weaker. The small pieces of the radish together with the other vegetables didn't make my tongue burn at all.

Radishes and horseradish may be from the same family, but they are different. Radishes, like the picture you posted, are wonderful in salads and yes they are a little hot, but some are pepperoncinis and they also are great in salads. Radishes are also good just to eat whole, and some people put salt on them, but not me, I stick with how they taste plain. As for horseradish sauce, I think maybe people put that on roast beef or something, but I prefer just plain horseradish which is much hotter. I use that for Brisket when we had our Yom Teruah meal this last Sunday, and it is the bitter herb used in the Passover Seder dinner. I love horseradish mixed with mashed beets and on matzo, yummy..

I have never mixed horseradish with mashed beets. You do mean beetroot and not sugar beets right? I am going to try it.

Okay, before I answer, I think beetroot is the root of a fresh beet, correct? And sugar beets are what? Canned beets? All I know is I use canned beets and mash them to mix with the horseradish. I started doing this when my mentor made it for the Passover Seder, because the beets tame down the hot horseradish for those who can't tolerate the heat.

so what is the difference between a radish and horseradish though? are they different vegetables altogether? so the picture i posted, can be cut up and put into salads, but this is not what makes the sauce that you have with beef? lol.. *confused!*

I usually slice them thin and have them in a mixed salad. Also I like them sliced ,salted, eating them with sandwiches,or chicken soup. They contain a lot of vitamin C.

Not to cook them! When you have your soup in a bowl, ready to eat,On a plate slice thin the radish(red, white, does not matter)sprinkle some salt on it and enjoy it with your soup.Goes best with chicken soup!

oh putting them into soup? i haven't heard of that option before!

i avoid radish like the plague, i find it to much work in preperation for very little taste value. You mention 'horseradish sauce' which is an entirely different taste. the horseradish is more hot and spicy and much more interesting than the boring old radish. But the bottom line is that it is down to personal taste and i will avoid both. If you are looking for radish ideas i would suggest putting them in the bin.

"If you are looking for radish ideas i would suggest putting them in the bin" I concur! Like the cucumber I usually add plenty of salt and vinegar before throwing them in the bin.

Radish is like other vegetables that are good to eat when fresh. Fresh vegetable salad. Like what you saw from the television program, you can chop it and mix with other vegetables of your like.

I'm not very fond of radish but I have tried a salad with radish and no they're not hot at all. Koreans even have a way of making a radish appetiser that's really very delicious.

I remember my mom cooking or preparing radishes in soy sauce, vinegar, onions and ground pork or beef. I forgot what it's called but it does taste so good, it goes well with steamed white rice. I have never tried recreating it because to be honest I am not a big fan of radish but this particular dish of my mom's is the only way I can eat it.

so it can be cooked with then? fantastic i will start looking up receipies in which i can use it :)

I love radishes! I just eat them raw with my carrots and celery and dip them in a veggie dip or even ranch dressing. Is also good cut up on salads.
